This article will describe the basic procedure involved in the installation of Macromedia Flash Player 9 Plug-in for Mozilla Firefox Browser in Ubuntu operating system. The procedure will work for Ubuntu and Debian as well.

The very first thing you need to know is your current Plug-Ins for Mozilla firefox Browser. To know about your current Plug-Ins, please log in to your Ubuntu desktop and then launch your Firefox browser. After that type in about: plugins in address bar to learn more about your currently installed plug-ins. It could be possible that on your desktop the Flash Player isn’t installed at all but it doesn’t matter as it is no prerequisite to follow this tutorial.

After knowing your current Plug-Ins installed, you need to download Adobe Flash Player 9.

Step 1: For this, go to http://www.adobe.com and click on Get Adobe Flash Player button. Make sure that you are using Mozilla firefox Browser from Ubuntu. If you are using a Windows browser then you will be redirected to the Windows version of Flash Player 9. Provided that you are using a Mozilla Firefox Browser in Ubuntu operating system then only you will be redirected to the download page of Ubuntu version of Flash Player 9.

Step 2: On the download page of Plug-in, you can choose between a Flash Player .tar.gz file and a Flash Player .rpm file but you have to select one of them (it doesn’t matter which one file you are using) and download it to your computer.

Step 3: After downloading the file, you have to install the Flash Player 9. Here I will describe that how we can install the .tar.gz and also .rpm version of the file for Ubuntu OS.

Step 4: Before starting your installation, make sure that all the browser windows are closed. Now you can precede the installation for .tar.gz Version of the file, if you have downloaded the .tar.gz version of Flash Player 9.

Step 5: Now open a command line terminal as the installer will run through a command. After opening the command line install the plug-in like this:

cd /home/falko/Desktop/ (Replace /home/falko/Desktop

with the path to the directory where you saved the Flash Player 9 .tar.gz.). tar xvfz install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz.

Step 6: Cd install_flash_player_9_linux/. After executing this command line you have to run the setup script: sudo ./flashplayer-installer. You may be prompt to ask a few questions. For example, Copyright(C) 2002-2006 Adobe Macromedia Software LLC. All rights reserved and Adobe Flash Player 9 for Ubuntu agreement.

Step 7: After accepting the agreement condition the Adobe Flash Player 9 will be installed on your machine. Now you are able to run the Adobe Flash Player as the “root” user and it will be installed system-wide. The Support for flash player plug-in is available at http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/.

It’s important to note that during installation the installer will overwrite this existing directory if an older version of Adobe Flash Player has been detected in /usr/lib/Mozilla/plugins.
