There was a time when professional photography was only reserved for a select few. The one major reason behind this was the inability to afford a complicated and bulky looking- SLR camera.

The DSLRs which followed the SLRs were still bulky and carrying one around was not a comfortable option. People settled for carrying a small digital camera for their everyday needs. However, with the recent launch of Sony’s NEX-3 and NEX-5 DSLRs, the distant dream of being able to comfortably carry around these superior devices, has now become a reality!

This new addition to the Alpha family claims to be the “World’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera”! They are slim, sleek and one must say, beautifully designed! They are the new generation of DSLR cameras which will revolutionize the SLR segment in the market. The NEX-3measures a mere 25.4 mm while the measures 24.2 mm(for) at its slimmest end. The screen for both is 3 inches thick and offers higher resolution than a Micro Four Thirds camera! Unlike conventional DSLR cameras, NEX-3 and Nex-5 are easy to handle and do not compromise on the high picture quality, which the DSLRs are famous for!

The unique selling point of NEX-3 and NEX-5 is the wide field of view that they offers to the photographer. Standard digital cameras do not come with this feature, which is probably their biggest drawback. A professional photographer will understand the frustrations attached with working with conventional devices. However, the new additions to the Sony family are compatible with a number of interchangeable lenses. They come with a feature known as “Sweep Panorama with 3D Capability”. Due to this distinguishing feature, when you sweep the camera from one end to the other keeping the shutter down, the camera bursts into a series of high speed frames, creating 23 megapixel panoramas with an angle of view of 226 degrees. If this doesn’t excite the photographer in you, nothing else will!

Modern day cameras are not only about clicking still pictures but also involve shooting videos. The Nex-3 and Nex-5, both offer full HD recording. They can be connected to a HD television for a high quality viewing experience! However, keeping everything in mind, the camera will face stiff competition from Sony’s traditional rivals Panasonic and Olympus, who are big players in the SLR segment. The products have been priced intelligently, starting with $549.99 for a Nex-3 with 16mm F2.8 Lens, going up to $699.99 for a Nex-5 with 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 Lens. They are due to hit stores in the UK by June this year.

Sony has delivered a number of high quality products over the years and has a great reputation in the world market. They have a fan base like no other electronics company.

Every company needs to make room for innovation to satisfy their customer’s needs. Sony has done this time and again! The new Nex-3 and Nex-5 range of DSLR cameras is a fitting example of this point! With this launch, Sony has taken professional photography from the hands of a select few to the ordinary man!
