Microsoft® Office Update

Microsoft® introduced Windows® Update as a web site with the launch of Windows® 98. To access downloads for updates, a link is given on the Start Menu to Windows® Update.

Microsoft® announced the first beta of Microsoft Update at the February 2005 RSA Conference. This update was an optional change for Windows® Update that gives security patches, service packs and other updates for both Windows® and other Microsoft® software.

Office Update

Microsoft® Office Update is a free online service that allows users to detect and install updates for their Microsoft® Office products. This update was released for Office 2000, Office XP, and Office 2007. On 1 August 2009, Microsoft® called back the service. Users are now required to use Microsoft® Update.

Windows Vista®, Windows Server® 2008 and Windows® 7

In Windows Vista®, Windows Server® 2008 and Windows 7, the web site is not used to give a user interface for choosing and downloading updates. It has been replaced with the automatic updates control panel has been expanded to give similar functionality. Microsoft® Office update support is also built into the software, but is turned off by default. You can also set the revised Windows® Update to automatically download and install both Important and Recommended updates. Such types of updates were not available in previous versions of Microsoft® software.

In previous versions of Windows® software, updates requiring a reboot pops up a dialog box every of specified minutes which requests that the user reboot the system. In latest versions, this dialog box allows user to select the time period before it prompts again. The changed dialog box also shows under other applications, instead of on top of them.
