Raspberry Pi home computer about to go into production

Raspberry Pi home computer is a specialized computer system especially designed for technology freak kids. An ARM chip is used in these computers, similar to the one used in mobile phones. It is designed to run on Linux open source operating system. The price is fairly set at $25. Test versions of these computers are under observation by experts. If they meet all expectations, their production is supposed to start in bulk volumes early this year.

Inspiration behind Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi has been inspired by a video game from David Braben, who searches ways to inspire kids to start careers in the field of technology. With help from BBC Micro, Mr. Braben started developing games. With Ian Bell, his school friend, he created Elite, a ground-breaking PC game.

The computers are being developed in Cambridgeshire and those waiting for the devices are watching closely for each and every update. On 23rd December, the official blog stated that first circuit boards for the devices have arrived. The circuit boards will be filled up with all necessary components. Hardware, software and electrical tests are being carried out, ensuring that the production process goes out smoothly.

Liz Upton wrote on the blog that once the devices pass the tests, full-scale production of the gadgets will start in more than one factory.

Two versions of the devices will be available: Model A ($25), which will lack a network connector and Model B ($35), which will have an Ethernet socket. Liz Upton added that if the tests go fine, then first of 10 boards will be sold off to the highest bidder in an auction.

Initially, the machines were supposed to have been ready by the end of 2011. But because of delay in the development of the devices, they are now around 3 weeks behind the schedule. In spite of this, it is expected that the customers will be able to place their orders by the start of 2012. The organization did not take any pre-orders as it did not want to take cash from their customers without having anything ready.

Dual monitor Application

If you have a computer, which is rarely utilized, then MaxiVista can help you to connect the PC as the second monitor for another computer. For doing this, there will not be any need of extra hardware.MaxiVista can be used with any sort of combination of laptop, tablet PC or desktop, to mirror or extend the screen content of the primary PC. MaxiVista is also compatible with multi-monitor systems based on hardware, and two dual monitor systems may be put together to prepare a display of four monitors from the primary PC.

The software of the server is fixed up in the primary PC. Then the program of the server is utilized to produce a viewer file of small type, which is duplicated to the PC of the secondary type and run. MaxiVista operates ideally on one’s current PC with a dual-monitor.

The PC of the secondary type may be operated in background so long as one does not require viewing the screen. In mirror style, the screen content upon the initial display may be copied to the secondary display.

Multiple monitors enable program switching and comparing documents easier than before. If quality is not a major issue, you may choose used or older monitors at online auctions, or at discount stores or computer outlets.

HP TouchSmart® Desktops

HP is an innovative company, which has been always launching products that are user friendly and ergonomically designed. HP has been one of the pioneer companies in the introduction of the touch screen and touch sensitive applications on their desktops and laptops, well ahead of the competition.

HP was one of the first companies to introduce the concept of All-In-One PC way back in 1972. An All-In-One PC, in the technologically advanced world today looks different though. The All-In-One PC is a slim LCD monitor housing the CPU, power supply, drives, disks, displays and everything required in a PC except the keyboard and mouse. With a lot of manufacturers introducing products similar to HP’s touch screen All-In-One PC, HP moved one step ahead in introducing a model with a pivoting facility and even a reclining feature.

In the earlier offerings of HP, the display was vertical and rather cumbersome, even tiring when put to use, for long hours in a day, with the forearm forced to be parallel to the worktable, to touch the screen time and again. This fatigue factor did not go well with the desktop PC. Although, this was okay on POS terminals, ATMs, Kiosks, etc. where the usage was for a few moments only, this posed various issues when brought into application on the desktop PC.

HP introduced two new models recently, with large 23 inch touch screen displays, where the entire display unit, pivoted, can swivel around to 180 degrees and even recline up to 60 degrees. The TouchSmart 610 and 9300, Elite Business PCs have taken the All-In-One PC to completely new heights of comfort and ergonomics, making touch interaction a new experience.

The new TouchSmart software layer has made apps like the NetFlix, Hulu, Twitter etc. innovatively wonderful to work with. The TouchSmart App center is also interesting.

While the TouchSmart 610 All-In-One PC is typically positioned as a consumer model, the 9300 Elite Business All-In-One PC has been put in as an enterprise version as also for Kiosks, POS Counters, etc. or customer spaces. While the TouchSmart 610 is configured with Intel or AMD processors, the 9300 comes with the elite Sandy Bridge chipset from Intel.

Exclusive features like Face Recognition software with the 2 mega pixel camera, Blu-ray drive, 160 GB SSD option, Beats Audio system and 1920 x 1080 resolution make these offerings, exclusive All-In-One PC. The Windows 7 operating system, 802.11 Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 6-in-one card reader, slot loading DVD player, wall mounting options and interesting apps, make the HP products really smart.

Sony® VAIO J Series VPCJ118FX/B All-in-One PC

The principal difference between a desktop computer, an all-in-one PC and a laptop are very little and subtle but play an important role in terms of form factor. Typically an all-in-one PC is different and has advantages over the desktop in that the number of cables required is much, much lower in the all-in-one PC. This is also the case of laptops. All-in-Ones come with the monitor housed into the same cabinet integrated into the system reducing the maze of cables all round a desktop unit.

These days, with the advent of the LCD monitors, replacing the big and bulky CRT monitors, the large screen laptops serve the purpose of an all-in-one PC. The Sony VAIO J, VPCJ118FX/B model is a typical desktop replacement with its large 21.5” full HD touch screen. This product comes with Intel i7 CPU and 6 GB DDR RAM, besides the a 500 GB hard disk for storage.

The multi-touch control on the touch screen brings about an entirely new experience in scrolling, zooming, and rotating your pictures, by simply flicking, pinching and tapping objects directly on the touch screen. The NVIDIA GeForce GPU and dedicated 512 MB video RAM brings in a wonderful graphics capability. 10 / 100 / 1000 BaseT Ethernet protocol and 802.11b / g / n Wi-Fi, 4 USB 2.0 ports, one iLink connector and 4 Mb cache, 2.66 GHz processor with its Turbo Boost technology going up to 3.33 GHz, make the product a formidable All-in-One PC.

The system comes with a CPU and display in a single unit, weighing about 21.6 lbs, with an additional wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. The optical drive built into the CPU comes with DVD R/RW/RDL/RAM and Read-only Blu-Ray disc support. The Intel Hi-Definition audio, internal microphone and external microphone + headphone jack makes audio performance a pleasure. The built-in MotionEye Camera and microphone with face tracking technology, multimedia card reader, memory stick slot – SD memory card are interesting features in the All-in-One PC.

The Sony VAIO J, VPCJ118FX/B All-in-One PC comes with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit operating system, antivirus software, Sony Creativity Suite, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Pack, and VAIO Care system diagnostics and maintenance pack. The body is Energy Star 5.0 and ROHS compliant. The product comes with a one year warranty, online and e-mail support as also telephone support. The On Site / In Home Service as a feature is also interesting.

This new concept of just a display with an integrated CPU and one single power cable with a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse, with the as always best of design Sony products is really impressive in looks and performance. The touch screen is quite sensitive with wonderful multi-touch features. Sony have offered this system with several Microsoft games pre-installed which use the touch screen and a lovely Paint program for kids which is impressive.

HP plans to launch PCs that can run WebOS

In this competitive world each and every company is developing new techniques to maintain a remarkable position. WebOS is an operating system used in mobile phones. This is a futuristic plan which HP would be implementing in the next year. This would definitely create a new segment in the market and would attract customers. WebOS was first introduced by Palm in the year 2009. This operating system is the successor of Palm OS. The formation of WebOS was by collecting similar things and then combining them so that they work together to sort out many functions. It works on the Linux kernel. This operating system uses the Web 2.0 technology. HP acquired Palm in the year 2010 for the WebOS operating system. The best part of WebOS is the Synergy feature. Through the accounts in Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook, a user can collect information from many resources. Even for messaging, Synergy integrates all the conversations of each contact and makes it a single chat style window. The WebOS utilizes the Webkit layout engine.

The company has decided to use the mobile operating system, that is, WebOS in the desktops. HP has announced that the personal computers that will be shipped in 2012 will be having the ability to run WebOS. The intention behind the introduction of WebOS is to attract the software developers to create applications for the WebOS ecosystem. HP has also prepared the first tablet with WebOS. Since the company is presenting the WebOS along with the other features like tablets, smart phones and third party developers, there would be a bigger audience for vending this application. The basic idea behind including WebOS in the personal computer is to enlarge the developer ecosystem. WebOS has almost 7000 applications inbuilt in it. This particular feature helps HP to be the leading one in the market. Data security is also an important point that HP is paying emphasis on. HP has chosen to increase the device security. This would increase the amount of data that can be secured by the customers.

Either the WebOS will be working as the main operating system or it will be integrated in the Windows. HP is actually trying to bring this technology to the masses and take over the market.

Microsoft® readies locked-down Windows® 7 Thin PCs

Microsoft is about to bring its Software Assurance volume licensing customers a more compact package with a locked down version of Windows 7 to function as Microsoft calls it a “Thin Client”. Microsoft has announced an upcoming product named Windows Thin PC SKU. This according to the company will give its users dual use advantage with the facility to double up their existing PCs as thin clients. Windows Commercial General Manager Gavriella Schuster explained that PCs equipped with WinTPC wouldn’t need the Virtual Desktop Access license which is a must for users of regular thin clients. This release coincided with the release of the much awaited Service Pack 1 of Windows 7 and windows Server 2008 R2.

The new service pack contains software for Microsoft Dynamic Memory which will allow Windows Server Hyper-V to dynamically allocate more or less memory as required to each virtual device. Also remote FX graphics are expected to be delivered which will bring a boost to 3D applications and also helps deployment of Windows 7 through virtual machines using this technology. RemoteFX was acquired after the acquisition of Calista Technologies by Microsoft. According to Microsoft executives, Windows 7 SP1 client PCs can utilize RemoteFX and turn into hosted thin clients which have the ability to link back to a centralized smart platform like a computer.

Microsoft had earlier offered along with the Windows Vista platform to its users a thin client feature. Microsoft had featured a licensing option with its previous operating system Windows Vista called as Windows Vista Enterprise Centralised Desktop at a competitive price of $23  for each desktop for its clients under the software assurance scheme.

According to executives at Microsoft, WinTPC is a new revised and worked on version of WinFLP. WinFLP was based on the Windows XP SP3 version while the new WinTPC is based on the Windows 7 OS. However, Microsoft has made it clear that WinTPC has no relation to VECD, Windows Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktop (VECD) is quite different from WinTPC as VECD was a license program that allows its users access to Windows VDI platform. Microsoft reiterated that WinTPC is a Software Assurance benefit and a locked down, smaller footprint version of the Windows 7 OS that is designed to help use PCs as thin clients.

This is another tool from Microsoft to revolutionize the way you use computers in your work environment. Microsoft is continuously innovating and coming up with new and low cost ways to influence the way you work and interact in the professional environment. It will be available for download from the Microsoft Connect site in the first half of 2011. This will be a public beta version of the platform not a release client or a finished product which will be available to select users to test and find out bugs if any in this platform.
