Orkut is going to die, but you can save your data

There was a time when Google’s very first social networking site “Orkut” was in great demand. But with the advent of other social networking websites, soon the traffic on Orkut came down. Thus the owner of the website, Google has now decided to say goodbye to Orkut on September 30, 2014. Fortunately, till then you can continue using the website and even export your data, pictures as well as community posts using Google Takeout. This service will enable you to download your Orkut data to your computer in a zip file.

Here’s how you can download data from your Orkut account

Before you start, it is important to note that you can only download data from your own account. This means that you cannot download testimonials or scraps you sent. You can only manage to download data that you have received. To save file using Google Takeout, follow the below given steps:

Step 1: Open Google Takeout and fill required details to sign in.

Step 2: Select ‘Choose services’.

Step 3: Now select ‘Orkut’.

Step 4: Click on ‘Create archive’. It will take a few minutes to archive the data. If you want, you can leave the page. Once the archive is ready, you will get an email.

Step 5: When the data has been archived, click on ‘Download’.

The best part about this method to download data is that, there’s no limit to archive information. But in case, you don’t want to download data and archive it, especially pictures in HTML format, you can export them directly to your Google+ account. Check out how:

Step 1: Open Google+ home page and log in to your account.

Step 2: Login to your Orkut account and open the album export page.

Step 3: Now select all the albums that you would to like to export. Or click on ‘Select all’.

Step 4: Click on ‘Import selected’ transfer your photos. Note that these pictures will be visible to you only. To make them visible to your Google+ members, you can go to privacy settings and select the desired changes.

So all the Orkut users pack up your stuff and get ready to bid adieu to your account.

Facebook to launch mobile payment program to make online purchases

Facebook is all about sharing, communicating, networking and marketing. Whether you want to get noticed, get a job or get connected, there is so much that you can do using Facebook. And now purchasing is also possible. Facebook is expected to release a new mobile payment feature to enable users to make purchases simply by logging into a retailer’s app with their Facebook credentials. However, this feature would be only available to those users who have already provided their credit card information to the social networking site for buying game-related products or gifts. Currently in the testing phase, initially, this mobile payment system will partner with only one retailer- JackThreads.

All set to give a tough competition to an established name like PayPal, the prime intend behind this initiative is to get a larger foothold in e-commerce and also know what majority of the users want to purchase from advertisers. This facility by Facebook will enable users to complete a transaction mere by clicking an extra button. On the other hand, it will further help businesses who already have a page on this highly popular social networking site turn their likers to potential customers.

However, the only major hurdle Facebook has to overcome before rolling-out is mobile payment system is security. Most Facebook users are already aware of how any social networking site collects and uses personal information and convincing them to provide their credit card information can be quite a challenge. And if Facebook wants to garner success, the social networking site will have to make sure to keep the privacy and other credential information of the buyers completely safe and secure.

Play a Matchmaker with Youshouldtotallymeet App

They say matches are made in heaven. But in this age of online social networking, it’s no surprise; matches are made on digital platforms. Gone are the days when matches were made through sister’s friend’s cousin’s neighbor’s brother’s son’s aunt’s daughter. 2013 is the modern era, where everything happens on social networking site like Facebook. And lately an app ‘YouShouldTotallyMeet’ for Facebook has been introduced that completely relies on your online network of friends to hook you up and find your match.

More on YouShouldTotallyMeet

Created by a group of four friends after experiencing difficulties of dating in a big city, YouShouldTotallyMeet primarily enables users to set up their single friends (having common interests) over Facebook. In essence, with this app, you can play Cupid and become an online matchmaker and introduce your single friends to your other friends.

Hayley Taylor, Co-Founder, YouShouldTotallyMeet, says, “Two of us are married, and the other two are single. We saw an opportunity to use Facebook as a way for single people to have fewer bad dating experiences. By being set-up with mutual friends of friends, it’s a way to ‘kiss fewer frogs’, so to speak.”

To use this Facebook app, you first need to make an app profile for a friend who is single and ready to mingle. It is always a good idea to ask your single friend first. Know what qualities they want for a potential relationship. Via the app, then you write some really strong points why someone should set up with your friend. Your mutual friends can vouch for them with ‘agree’ ’disagree’ votes. From your list of friends, you find people they “should totally meet”. And can introduce your friends in a single click.

Then just wait for the magic to begin.
