How to Remove CA Antivirus

CA Antivirus is one of the bets Anti-Virus software available in the market these days and is being trusted by many. CA is a product by Computer Associates which is a name in computing industry for years. This Anti-Virus is good one because it carries a lot in itself. It has a built in Firewall, an Anti-Malware and an Anti-Spyware along with the basic Anti-Virus. Moreover the new version of CA which is CA Antivirus Plus is coming pre-installed in many new notebooks that have been launched these days. CA Anti-Virus plus offers some very advanced features of Virus cleaning and safeguarding against Virus, Spywares, Trojans, Worms and other online threats. It also has new feature for automatically scanning the USB drives which are common mode of carrying and sharing data. Despite so many features this Anti-Virus has very small foot print on memory and doesn’t make the computer sluggish by capturing all the resources by it. But again every good thing has some bad aspects as well. CA at times becomes over protective and stops the genuine and legitimate data. It frustrates the user when the important mail he sent didn’t go through and is still lying in outbox or when the mail came but the important attachment was missing or when you cannot connect to the game server or when you cannot share data on the network. It becomes frustrating and if you have good knowledge of the communication ports and exceptions then you can deal with it easily else you will end up making a decision to get rid of it and re-install it or get a new one.

In this post I will let you know the simple steps to remove the CA Anti-Virus from your computer in the simplest way.

Step1:

Open Start menu and then click on Run. In Run type MSCONFIG and press Enter.

Step2:

Once you have the System Configuration Utility Window open, click on the Startup Tab and then uncheck all the CA entries. Click on Apply.

Step3:

Click on the Services Tab and then uncheck all the CA entries from here as well. Click on OK and then restart your computer.

This helps in stopping all the processes to be in the memory for smooth removal

Step4:

Open Start menu and then the Control Panel.

Step5:

In Control Panel open Programs and Features and then wait for the list to populate.

Step6:

Once the list is populated by all the programs installed on your machine, select the CA Antivirus and then click on Uninstall.

Step7:

Follow the instructions given by the wizard to complete the removal process and restart the computer when prompted.

By following the above steps you can successfully remove the CA Anti-Virus from your machine, but make sure that you don’t leave it this way – either re-install CA fresh on it if you wish or install any other security software immediately.

How to Use Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

Microsoft has developed the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for scanning and removing malicious software from computers which have Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 as the operating system. After download and installation this tool does not work as an anti virus but works in removal of infection which has already come on the system. This tool is not a replacement of Any Virus or Anti Spyware but works in situations where Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware fails in doing their job. Once downloaded and installed the tool the tool runs once to check your computer for infection by malicious software which includes Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. It helps in removing any infection it finds. A new version of this tool is released every month by Microsoft.

Difference between Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool and any Anti-Virus

As quoted above this tool doesn’t work like any Anti-Virus and doesn’t the incoming and outgoing traffic, but it only cleans the infections which have already entered the system. It removes infections from a computer which us already infected, so it is recommended that users should have an up-to-date Anti-Virus to block the incoming infections rather than just relying on this Microsoft’s tool for keeping computer infection free. This tool is capable in removing only specific malicious software and this is a very small count if compared with the number of malicious software’s prevailing these days. To be precise this tool focuses only on those infections which are running in the memory at the time of scan. This tool is not meant for scanning the entire hard drive and look for inactive infections.

Download and Execution instructions

This tool can be downloaded and executed on computers which have Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP. This tool was also available for Windows 2000 but Microsoft is removing its compatibility with Windows 2000 and will stop it on 13th July, 2010. If your computer has Windows Updates turned ON than new version of this tool downloads and installs automatically and runs in silent mode on your computer. You come to know about the existence of this tool only if it catches any infection otherwise it continues running silently in the memory.

If you are not sure if the Automatic Update is ON or OFF the open the automatic updates section on your computer and check the same. Some steps may vary basis the operating system but you will find this option under Control Panel – > Windows Updates
In case you want Microsoft to enable Automatic updates on your computer than open the following links and run the tool which will automatically do it for you: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9709473
If you want to download the tool manually from Microsoft’s Website rather than downloading it as an update then visit the following link and download the package: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

Unlike other installer packages this tool does not require windows installer, but on running this file it creates a temporary directory on the root of the hard drive and places the tools core files in it. The file named mrtstub.exe is the executable file of this tool and the entire directory gets deleted once the scan is through or when you restart the computer after a full scan. In case the folder doesn’t get deleted automatically then you can delete it manually after running the tool.

Before running the tool make sure that the following situations stand true:

1. The operating system on your computer is one of the following:
a. Windows 7
b. Windows Vista
c. Windows Server 2003
d. Windows XP
e. Windows 2000 (only till 13th July 2010)
2. You are the Administrator of the computer or your account has got Administrator privileges.
3. The tool which you are running is not 60 days old. If it is so then it will not execute and will ask you to download a new version

Language support

This tool is available in 24 different languages. There is no separate file for each language but the one single file has all the languages in it and displays the language based on the computers language settings.

How to Speed up a Windows XP Computer

Speed up your system through various simple ways

The performance of every system tends to degrade with the passage in time, if it is not properly maintained. The windows XP based system is no exception from it. Even its performance degrades with the passage of time. But this can be fended off if it is been taken proper care of. This would not only save money but also another precious thing called Time.

There are various ways in which a user can speed up his system. Some simple ways include regularly checking up the system for various kinds of Spyware and viruses which are generally the root cause for the slowdown that most of the users experience worldwide. The user should regularly update the anti-spyware program, and the virus definition files. There are other ways too like

  • Using a browser that have options of deleting the history of the surfed net which help in increasing the internet speed and also less viable to virus attacks.
  • Defragmenting your Hard disk. This process puts up related files close to each other so that considerable amount of free space can be accumulated on the hard disk. To Defragment a disk go to RUN type “dfrg.msc” and then start the defragment process.
  • One can also speed up the system using the disk cleanup utility. This utility compresses the files and creates disk space. We can use it by typing “cleanmgr.exe” in RUN.
  • The user can also remove unwanted software and programs that occupy a lot of physical memory. This can be done through Control Panel and going to Add/Remove program option and removing the unwanted programs or software.
  • When the system boots it also starts a few applications along with it. These applications occupy considerable resources of your system and so they should be blocked from auto starting using the “msconfig” command in RUN. Go to Startup options and block those applications which are not needed every time the system boots itself. There are various software applications which can be used to do the same thing. The System can also be helped by booting faster by changing the time out value in “BOOT.INI” option in “msconfig”.

The system graphics are another factor that affects the system speed. The graphics can be minimized so that the processing time of the system gets better.

The system performance can also be increased by ending many unused process that run in the background of the system. This can be done by clicking on the “process tab” which can be found in the Windows Task Manager.

The above mentioned ways are the simplest of the ways by which a user can speed up his system. But while doing so there are various things that should be kept in mind. All the above mentioned process can cause your system some critical problems if not executed properly. The user should take some precautions before performing the mentioned ways. The Basic step is to create a backup of important data that are stored in the system. User must be careful enough not to stop any process that is a system requirement as this may stop the system from booting and cause many problems.

Thus, one can say the speeding up a system is an easy task if and only if performed with proper precautions.

How to Solve Internet Explorer 8 Installation Problems

Troubles with installing Internet Explorer 8 can be because of diverse issues. These issues have to be resolved! The successful installation of Internet Explorer 8 depends on many such issues. Following are some steps which will ensure successful installation :

  • Retune Windows security settings back to the defaults

To retune Windows security settings back to the default the following steps are to be implemented:

  • Type “cmd” in the “Run” tab (can be located in “Start” menu). Clicking “Enter” will execute the command.
  • If you have Windows XP on your computer then the following command has to be entered;secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose”. “Enter” will execute the command.
  • For the owners of Windows Vista “secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose”, has to be typed.” “Enter” will execute the command.
  • Any messages flashing on the screen after this should be conveniently ignored.
  • Scanning of the computer is required

The computer can be scanned by updating the anti-virus and anti-malware software installed in your computer. If you do not have this type of software, downloading a free edition from the internet can be useful. However, it would not be as much effective as a licensed software.

  • Momentarily, render inoperative anti-spyware and anti-virus software

Sometimes the anti-virus software does not allow installation of other software, considering it to be a virus. In order to stop this practice, you have to disable this software. This can be done by right-click on the software icon and clicking “Exit” or “Disable”.

Note: The firewall of the computer should be working.

Now, try to install Internet Explorer 8 and if anti-virus software was the only hindrance, it will get installed. Next, enable the anti-spyware and anti-virus software after the installation.

  • The computer should be started in a “Clean Boot” condition

There are times when the computer is not in a clean boot state. At this stage the computer does not allow any other software to be installed in its system. To mend this problem, you have to restart your computer in a clean boot state.

After doing as advised, try to install Internet Explorer 8.It will be installed if booting was the problem area.

  • Ensure if there are files which cannot be reorganized

To check for the existence of any file/s which cannot be backed up the following method has to be implemented:

  • Type “%windir%\ie8_main.log” in the search tab (found in “Start” menu).”Enter” will execute the command.
  • CTRL+END will shift the end of  ie8_main.log file.
  • Type “rchiveFileForUninstall:ArchiveSingleFile Canceled” in the “Find what” tab.
  • Beneath “Direction” you will find an icon “Up”. Click on it and subsequently click “Next”.

Now all the files that cannot be backed up are treated. Retune the authorization for the Vgx.dll file. Internet Explorer 8 can now be installed. If it does not, “Support” needs to be contacted. You may also have to replicate the above steps. If even a single step is omitted or wrongly followed then the installation process will be hindered.
