How To Back Up Your iPhoto Library

Apple iPhoto is an advancement to manage all your images in your Mac computer. Apple is dedicated to provide high end and easily manageable applications to its Mac users and iPhoto is one same product in line.

It provides some new features like Full screen mode and Facebook enhancement. Users can also send photos directly using this application. Although it is a very robust and strong application but there are always chances of system crash and virus attach which can affect and remove all the important data from your computer. For this same reason, the application also allows used to take the backup of the library.

Here are some of the steps to take the backup of iPhoto library:

Take the backup on External drive

Connect the external drive to your Mac and open it. Finder windows will open with the content shown in the hard disk.

Now launch a new Finder window and launch your Picture folder. Make sure that you open the folder which contains iPhoto library file.

Now drag the library files onto the external file which you attached with your Mac computer. If you have performed the same process in previous time, or you already have some previous iPhoto library files in the external driver, you will be asked to replace the existing file. You must replace the older iPhoto library files as these are the latest files and contains the latest information and data.

Take the back of iPhoto library on a Disk

Users can also take the back up of iPhoto library files on a disk if the content is less. Although the steps and process is similar to that of an external drive, but users must follow the process appropriately.

Insert a blank CD or DVD in the drive and then drag all the iPhoto library from the Picture folder onto the disk icon appeared on the desktop screen.

Now try to drag the same icon towards Trash, which will show you the option to Burn Disk app. Select an appropriate name to that disk and click on Burn.

This will start the process of burning all iPhoto library files onto the selected blank CD or DVD.

If the files of content of the Picture folder are more than the size of CD or DVD, then you can also burn the content on parts in multiple disks.

Apart from the above mentioned steps, you can use the iPhoto application to take the back of the photos.

This is also a very simple and useful step to get eh backup os all kinds of images you have on you Mac computer.

If you want to burn or make CD/DVD of t photos which can be viewed on a PC, then you must first  export all the required photos onto a folder on your desktop and then transfer that folder to the desired CD/DVD.

Safari® and Internet Explorer® hacked at Pwn2Own contest

Pwn2Own is a hacking contest sponsored by the HP Digital Vaccine Labs (HP DVL), which is a research organization specializing in the analysis of security vulnerabilities. The objective of the contest is to help vendors develop patches for better security, as well as filters for better customer protection. HP’s Converged Infrastructure focuses on advanced data protection in the integration of data center technologies towards improved flexibility and scalability, in the cloud computing world.

In a statement, Dan Holden, director of HP DVL, said that sponsoring the Pwn2Own contest for the fifth consecutive year enables HP to remain on the leading edge of the security industry. This helps them to offer clients unique protection against malicious attacks. This year, the Pwn2Own contest covered Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome as well as 4 mobile devices, including the Dell Venue Pro, Apple iPhone, Blackberry 9800 and Nexus S.

Interestingly the Pwn2Own contest, found its beginnings to challenge the fact that Apple’s products were immune to viruses and other computer attacks, way back in 2007. The CanSecWest computer security conference decided to host a hacking contest to prove that Apple products are also vulnerable. A cash prize of $10,000 was on offer plus a MacBook for any hacker who could break into a new fully patched MacBook. Vulnerabilities so found in this contest would be provided with all details to the manufacturer / vendor to develop the required security patches to take care of the same.

The 2008 contest had three targets – a MacBook Air running Leopard OS, a laptop running Windows Vista and a laptop running Ubuntu Linux. This time the MacBook and Windows Vista were hacked, keeping the Ubuntu intact. The 2009 contest had one more addition, namely the smartphones. Here, the Mac OS was exploited through both, Safari and Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista also, but the smartphones remained unaffected.

2010 saw Safari running Snow Leopard on the Mac fail, Mozilla Firefox on Windows 7 also failed, and Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) on Windows 7 was also exploited. The only browser that was not defeated was the Google Chrome. The iPhone again using Safari was also hacked. All this over the years proved that the Mac OS X, although being secure, is safer but not really any more secure than the Windows OS.

The 2011 Pwn2Own contest again saw the Apple Safari browser, and the IE 8, getting hacked. The Safari on a fully patched Mac OS X 10.6.6 MacBook was hacked. IE 8 on a 64-bit Windows 7 Service Pack 1 using three separate vulnerabilities also went down. The Google Chrome OS hacker scheduled to exploit the CR 48 Chrome OS Notebook did not show up at the venue.

In the smartphone category, the iPhone 4 and the RIM Blackberry Torch 9800 succumbed to the hackers’ onslaught. The contest seems to be an interesting venture – testing the hacker, providing the vulnerability to the manufacturer, and making the IT world more secure.

iPhone® launched for customers of Verizon

With the launch of the much awaited iPhone for the subscribers of Verizon, analysts are making statements regarding the likely sales percentage of Verizon and whether it will be able to sustain the market pressure or not. Chief market analyst Mike Abramsky has forecast that the Verizon version of iPhone should sell around one million units in the first week of its launch itself. The analyst from RBC Capital also believes that at such a huge demand for the Verizon models, it might get out of stock soon. This forecast, however, varies from analyst to analyst, with some seeing the sale numbers for the Verizon model crossing two million.

Verizon became the second carrier for the Apple iPhone. It is a CDMA version of the AT&T iconic smart phones. The main reason behind Verizon selecting the CDMA version is that it does not wish to make changes in the iPhone network functionality as this will be required to carry forward LTE network. The price band kept for the CDMA phone is $199 for the 16 GB model and $299 for the 32 GB device with a contract for two years. The Verizon set of CDMA phones also will facilitate Wi-Fi connections with the option to connect to five different devices at the same time. The data plan that is to be provided for these sets is $15 and $30 per month for unlimited services.

Analysts feel that the affordable price band will attract more customers. It would be interesting to see if the Verizon phones are able to keep up with the expectations of New Yorkers that is visible with the crowding of the Verizon mobile stores. How good the CDMA sets perform depends on how well the phone are made to compete with other brands.

Google™ Translate App for iPhone®

Google has announced the launch of the Google Translate app for the Apple iPhone. This application will enable its users to speak into the phone and the speech will be converted into text. The application translates the speech and it will be available in a text format. It is called as the “speak to translate” application. This enables a voice input in fifteen different languages and the text message for its translation is received in fifty different languages. The use of this app is also very easy and can be done by any person. To use the apps, one just has to press the microphone button which appears next to the text box and then keep talking. Also the translation can be heard in twenty three different languages and this is also a feature of the application. The speech synthesizer that this application uses is the same which the Google translate option uses and this application was introduced last month.

The app is not just about talking and listening the speech back. iPhone and Google have made some small improvements to ease out things for its valued customers. For instance the translation can be seen in a full screen mode available as an option in the iPhone. This enables the user to have a full and a proper view of the translation and also shows the translation to another person. For this the user just has to use the zoom button. This feature also includes a dictionary which helps in getting the translation of the words in a different language. This is a must try application for people who travel to other countries often.
