Sandy Bridge chipsets recalled by Intel®

In the recent past, product recalls by various manufacturers have been making news worldwide, bringing consumer product safety to a peak and massive market losses, inevitable. When a core component is recalled, like in the case of Intel, it is not only Intel which suffers, but a whole range of product manufacturers, having had designed and manufactured their products, using the said defective components as their core parts. Code named “Cougar Point”, Intel’s chip is a part of the total chipset contained in the second generation Core series of Sandy Bridge processors. Having had released this product in early January, Intel had already shipped over 8 million chips which will need replacement after detection of the design flaw and are in a way happy that the realization came in quite early, limiting the extent of damage to Intel.

This unfortunate debacle has definitely put Intel on a backfoot, but their prompt and quick handling of the situation with the “Cougar Point” recall is estimated to cross the 1 billion mark, net loss, in the first quarter of 2011 considering lost revenues in addition to repair and replacement expenses associated with the fallout.

Some of the companies affected in this debacle include, Acer, ASUS, Toshiba, etc. In the US, product recalls is a known concept as early as 1959 – 1960, when Cadillac recalled and the steering linkage was replaced on a phenomenal number of cars. 1994 saw Intel Pentium processors recalled, setting them back financially, in a massive way. 2010 saw Toyota recalling several million vehicles because of faulty accelerator pedals. Internationally, consumer protection is now coming of age. In many other countries also this adds value to the brand if they can do it in an honorable manner. Each country has their product recall agency defined.

Hurricane tablet from HP and other WebOS devices

The launch and popularity of iPad has given a clear indication of the direction where the market will be heading in future. Many leading computer manufacturers such as Dell, ASUS, Motorola and Lenovo have come up with their own version of tablet PCs to prevent the iPad from getting dominance.  It comes as a no surprise as one of the leading computer manufacturers HP joins the bandwagon. With announcement of WebOS devices and Hurricane tablet, HP has given an indication that it will play an active part in countering the threat presented by iPad.

HP had earlier dropped its plan of introducing a Windows-powered Slate in early 2010. The reason known for the company’s change of plans was its acquisition of Palm which is considered to be a smartphone specialist. After the acquisition of Palm, HP had access to the widely acclaimed WebOS which would provide an ideal platform for tablet PCs and similar devices. This year, HP did not showcase any new products in the most popular consumer electronics category of tablet PCs. The announcement from HP came quickly after the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) when some of the leading manufacturers presented their tablet devices such as XOOM, Eee Slate and LePad.

HP in its press release clearly mentioned that the company is focused on the development of tablet PCs which will be based on the WebOS. The company has plans to reveal the details of WebOS (v2.0) and the range of devices that will be based on it. HP is confident about the WebOS and touts it as the first web-based operating in true sense. HP says the WebOS is a multi-tasking operating system which is one of its kinds in the market. Users can run twenty applications simultaneously on the WebOS.

Many industry analysts believe HP has missed the golden opportunity by not introducing or announcing tablets PCs and WebOS devices at the CES. HP has already made a foray into tablet market by making an announcement and it has aptly named the development project as “Hurricane”. HP has not however released any specification of the tablet PCs that it will be introducing.

As compare to Microsoft OS, Android market share of tablet is more so many useful features for Android tablets are launched by company. Currently news is that Asus is working on its own application store for its tablets but yet nothing official has been announced regarding own application store for tablets featuring Android OS.

The reason behind to starting the app store is that Google only allows its Android 3.0 AKA Honeycomb Os for only those who has separate app store for the OS. Thus Asus do not want to stay behind in Tablets business. So Asus are planning to start application store for the Android Honeycomb. The compotator companies like Archos and Toshiba has already built its own apps store for Android Honeycomb. Asus is also planning to launch its tablets in UK in the letter half of 2011 which is only a Wi-Fi model. The news says that Asus first launches app store first for only Android Honeycomb than only it will available for the other versions. Asus made the 7-inch Memo tablet and 10-inch tablets with the Android Honeycomb. So because of app store available for that user can easily download applications which are support for the OS and can customize tab as their requirements. This will enhance the experience of using a tablet.

The sources say that this application store is based on the app store like Apple. It consists of all useful software’s, games and utilities etc. The charges regarding the stores yet not been announced because of Asus is not ready to say anything about the App store news regarding Android tablets. The more information on the Asus app store might be available in March while company appears with Honeycomb tab in Cebit show.
