First of all, to begin the procedure simply access Microsoft Outlook Express from your PC  and once there click on the “Tools” tab just at the top of the now opened Outlook Express window. After the above, you have closed your Outlook program and all you have to do is simply maneuver to the start menu and go to the “Accessories” tab from where you should pick the “Run” tab and click on it. In the Run window that you have opened, right click on the dialog box and simply pick the “Paste” tab after which just hit the “OK” button. Choose “Edit” from the top of the opened window and select “Select All” from the menu. Now click the “Copy” tab option from the edit menu and then just close the window.

Go to your desktop, right click on it and from the drop down menu choose “New” and then select “Folder” from the subsequent that comes. Simply double click on the new folder you will see, right click on the white space in the new folder and click on “paste.”

How does Windows choose which files to back up?

Two options are offered to choose from:

•    First, the Windows can back up the data files from all user account on the computer like those saved in libraries, desktop, and in default Windows (App Data, Contacts, Desktop, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Saved Games, and Searches). Take note that this option back ups only the local files and does not back up those formatted files using the New Technology File System or NTFS.

•    Second, if the hard drive or computer stops working, system image of programs, Windows, and all drivers and registry settings can be backed up. This option is for formatted files using the NTFS. The system image is the exact copy of the drive and this can be used if the computer or the hard drive stops working.

Therefore, letting Windows choose which files to be backed up helps the user save important files. However, the options for backing up the files have its limits. There are files that Windows cannot back up like the Program files, File Allocation Table or FAT formatted files, Recycle Bin files, and temporary files less than 1 GB in size.

How to back up or transfer your data on a Windows-based computer

We have lots of important files or data that are stored in our computer or laptops. Now, imagine them being deleted accidentally because of some viruses or other factors.

What are the possible locations for data backup or transfer?

Some are using the removable media such as external hard disks, CDs, DVDs or flash drives like USB memory cards.

Backup or Transfer Data or Files

In a Windows 7-based Computer:

  • Transfer files to another Windows 7 computer.

Steps:

Click ‘Start’. Type in ‘Windows easy Transfer’ in the start search box. After, click the ‘Windows Easy Transfer’ in the programs list shown, and follow the instructions to complete file transfer.

  • Transfer files and settings to Windows Vista (use the Windows Vista version of easy transfer)

Steps:

On a Windows 7-based computer, insert the Windows Vista CD or DVD. Exit the Windows Vista setup program. Click ‘Start’ and then click ‘Computer’ and right-click CD/DVD drive and ‘Open’.

Open the ‘Support Folder’ and then the ‘migwiz’ folder. Double click ‘migwiz.exe’ file then follow the instructions to begin the transfer from Windows 7.

  • Backup current data as a safety precaution (Backup and Restore Center)

Note: this can only be restored by a Windows 7 Operating system.

Steps:

  1. Click ‘Start’ and in the search box, type in ‘Backup’.
  2. Click ‘Backup and Restore’ in the programs list. (If prompted, be sure to close any open programs before continuing).
  3. Under the Backup and Restore settings, click ‘Set up Backup’.
  4. Select where you want to save your backup files, then click ‘Next’.
  5. Select either: ‘Let windows choose’ or ‘Let me choose’, then click ‘Next’.
  6. Make the appropriate selection then click ‘Next’ or ‘Save settings’ and run backup.
  7. Backup will then save to the backup location.

In a Windows Vista-based Computer:

  • Transfer files and settings to another Windows Vista-based computer.

Steps:

  1. Click ‘Start’ and type in search box ‘transfer’.
  2. Click the ‘Windows Easy Transfer’ in the programs list.
  3. Click ‘Next’. (Close any opened programs before continuing)
  4. Click ‘Start a New Transfer’, and then ‘My Old Computer’.
  5. Click on ‘Use a CD, DVD or removable media’ and then select how you want to transfer your files.
  6. Select location (password is optional), then ‘Next’.
  7. Select the files you want to transfer and then review files to transfer before proceeding.
  8. Then click ‘Next’ or ‘Transfer’ and follow remaining instructions stated in transferring.
  • Backup current data as a safety precaution (Windows Vista backup and Restore Center)

Note: can only be restored on a Windows Vista Operating System.

Steps:

  1. Click ‘Start’ and type in Search box ‘Backup’, and then click in the program list.
  2. Backup files under ‘Backup Files or your Entire Computer’.
  3. Select desired location for the file backup, and then click ‘Next’.
  4. Select the disk or disks you want to backup, and then click ‘Next’.
  5. Select the file type or types you want to backup, and then click ‘Next’.
  6. Click ‘Save Settings’ and then ‘Start Backup’.
  7. It will then automatically save to desired selected backup location.

In a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003-based Computer:

  • Transfer files and settings from Windows XP (Windows XP files and Settings Transfer Wizard)

Steps:

  1. Click ‘Start’ and then click ‘All Programs’ and then ‘Accessories’, then ‘System Tools’ and then ‘Files and Settings Transfer Wizard’.
  2. Click ‘Next’ and then click ‘Old Computer’ and then ‘Next’.
  3. Select how you want to transfer your files. The ‘Others’ is saving the files to a network or removable media location.
  4. Select files you want to backup and then click ‘Next’.

With regards to manually making a copy of files (to a network location or removable media), the same goes for all the Windows-based Computers:

Steps:

  1. Click ‘Start’. In the ‘Computer’ double-click the drive where you currently have the Windows installed.
  2. Open ‘User’s Folder’, and then open the user folder from which you want to backup the files.
  3. Copy necessary folders to a network or removable media. (to backup data for all users, repeat 2 and 3).
  4. The saved files can be copied to any computer. However, you must have related application to open the files.

This will then help you secure and save your backup files from possible accident deletes.

How to Back Up Files in Windows 7

Backing up files is crucial, if you don’t want any of your files to go missing or you accidently deleted them. Backup and Restore functionality on windows 7 is highly improved and will create copies of any and all of your documents, photos, videos or any type of personal files you have created on your computer.  With it you never loose a file forever.

Setup and forget

After the initial setup, you can literally forget about the function, until the time you realise you want to access one of your missing files. With Windows 7 Backup and Restore feature you can setup on your chosen or assigned schedule and files can be backed up to another internal or external drive, your network server or even onto a DVD.  You can also let the windows choose all files or manually direct what files and directories that you want to be backed up automatically.

Backing up to DVD and / or internal and external drives option is available on all editions of Windows 7 – Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions. However, you can only use save to a network server/location  (like another network computer, company’s server and/or network external drive storage) if you have Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise editions of Windows 7.

Process

First of all ensure you are logged into as the administrator and know any system password you might have already set up. Begin by opening Backup and Restore from the System and Maintenance option inside your Control Panel window.  Once you are in the Backup and Restore follow these steps:

  • Click on the highlighted link called ‘Set up backup’
  • This will automatically begin a backup wizard in a new window. Here you can choose where you want your files to be backed up. Choose the disk either internal / external drive or network server and click Nextbutton.
  • Choose between ‘Let Windows choose (recommended) and ‘Let me choose’ click on Next button.
  • If you let windows choose the files , you will be directed to preview the selected files window. Or, if you decided to manually choose your backup files, check the files manually on the next window and once you are done you can preview the files. Then click on Save setting and run backup button
  • On the new window you can select how often, on which day of the month and choose the time you want the backup function to automatically run and save files.  Once selected click on OK button and you have successfully setup for backup option

Things to remember

If you choose  windows to automatically select all files except Program files, any files formatted as a FAT file system, any documents already in your recycle bin and temporary or temp files which are larger than 1 GB. Also, the initial backup setup will take some time and don’t  interrupt the backing up process.

The backup feature will automatically create a folder and all your files will be saved at your desired schedule time and date. It is really convenient and important and the first step when you begin using Windows 7.

How to Backup and Restore your Programs, System Settings and Files

For every computer user, taking the back up of their computer data and also restoring it again are two equally essential procedures. Just as you have the varied option to take the back up all your data, there are methods that help you to restore the backed up data for all your files. Moreover, you also have the option to restore the data that was accidentally lost or damaged.

You are also free enough to restore the specific files or certain group of files from your complete backup. In order to restore such files, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • If you wish to browse the various content of your backup, simply click onto Browse for files option or the Browse for folders option. However, while browsing through the backup folders, you will not be able to see their individual files. If you wish to view the specific files, select the Browse for files alternative.
  • In order to search particular content in your backup, simply click on Search and then type a part of the file or the file name and enter the Search button.

Additional Tips

  • Improve your search results, especially when you are searching for restore files or even folders for a particular user account, by adding its location of the specific file or folder within the search.
  • Wild characters like *.jpg can also help you to search all the JPG files which were stored in the back up.

 

 

Restoring backup data created from an another computer

Follow the procedure mentioned below, in case you want to restore files from the back up taken from another computer which also runs on Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

1. Click the Start button and then enter into the Control Panel. Now click on System and Maintenance option. Click into the Backup and Restore option.

2. Here, Click the Select another Backup to restore files from option. Now follow the particular steps mentioned in the wizard. In case you are asked to verify the administrator password or other confirmations, simply enter the particular details.

Restore files from the backup created from another computer

Restoring particular files from the complete backup created from another computer is also possible. Well, these files will be stored in a folder named by the username which was originally used for creating the backup

.1. Click the Start button and then click on Computer.

2. Now double click onto the icon for the particular drive in which the files are stored.

3. Hereby, double click onto the Users Folder.You will come across the folder named for every user account.

4. Again Double click onto the particular folder for the given username for which the backup was created.
