To configure MS Exchange 2003, you need to do the following procedures, this article will walk you through the process and you will have a better understanding by the time you finish these instructions.

To Configure MS Exchange

To set up the Exchange server so it can take in mail for whatever organization you are setting up for, you need to first install the software from a CD. However, ensure you have NNTP support before commencing with the configurations.

Simply open the Exchange System Manager to begin configuring your new Exchange installation. First of all, add the internet domain name to the recipient policies by opening the Exchange System Manager so they can be accepted by the SMTP server. Remember, the SMTP only accepts mail from domains in the recipient policies. Thus for your company’s domain to be accepted, add it to the default policy by enlarging the Recipients tab accessing Recipient Policies. On the Default Policy, double click to open its properties and pick E-Mail Address. You should see the accepted listed mails. Now click on New tab to add an SMTP protocol by typing the domain name you will get mail from e.g and check the box beside it and press OK. Next you will be given the Add New Address to all users tab, click to select it.

To Configure the SMTP Server for Inbound Mail,

You want the server to accept incoming mail, do the following;

Go to Servers/Protocols/SMTP/Default SMTP Virtual Server and locate settings for the SMTP, right click on Default SMTP Virtual Server and open properties. On General, leave it at default; on Access, click to Allow Anonymous Access in the Authentication box. Then choose Connection to connect to the SMTP sever, you can set it for individual or multiple IP addresses. Now all systems have access to the SMTP server. Go to the Relay tab and assign it if necessary and under Messages tab, limit the number of messages to be received per connection.

Configure the SMTP Server for Outbound Mail

To do this, right click on Connectors in the Exchange System Manager and pick New SMTP Connector. Under the General tab, make appropriate selections of what you want SMTP to do with sending mails. Do this on the DNS options accordingly. After that, add the Local bridgehead server option and on the Address Space, enter any wildcard address for the SMTP to allow emails to any domain. Under the authentication tab, fill in the User name and password from the Advanced tab on the SMTP connector and then choose Outbound Security. Now, simply choose Basic authentication and then select Modify to type user name and password.

You have just done it, successfully configured your Exchange Server to receive mails and to send mails to other domains. It can now send mails to the internet and receive SMTP email feed from any direct internet connection. The other remaining thing to do is to simply configure your users email addresses in the Active directory.

Use Wizards for configuration

Windows Small Business server 2003 includes many wizards that reduce some of the burden with accomplishing a task. In fact, it may be safely assumed that the easiest way to break a Windows SBS 2003 installation is by configuring systems and processes manually. This is best avoided in light of the excellent wizards available for everything including administering email accounts to configuring internet access.

I did like the combination of the two and tried it out, as such, I will share with you just how to go about configuring your iPhone so you can use it with Microsoft Exchange Server. Actually, after the whole process is done, you will notice that it is a very simple procedure. The whole thing should take you like minutes and you should be up and running in no time.

What to do?

To configure your iPhone and Microsoft Exchange Server, simply maneuver to the Settings folder of your iPhone and pick Mail. Now, on the Mail tab, select Add Account and then Other and finish it off with Exchange. The three procedures are conjoined, one after the other. Under the Name option, enter your name or and under the Address option, just enter the corporate email address that you use. Up to this point, you have now successfully created a new account and simply maneuver to this account’s Settings. From the newly created Account’s settings, select Advanced option and under it, change Remove to After one day or any other that you may like but do not leave it unchanged. Leaving it unchanged means all the messages from the server will be stored as read messages and it can get to you sometimes, like really on your nerves! Once you have done that, under the SSL option, ensure you leave it “On” and at that the same time, under the Authentication tab, simply enter Password.

Hurray you are on!

Once you have donethe above, you have successfully configured your iPhone and Microsoft Exchange Server and the two should be in line. Like you have seen, this is one of those simply simple procedures you can do in record time. Your iPhone is now connected to the Microsoft Exchange Server and you can now run it like any other PC on the server.

How to Configure Port 587 on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 enables the local network to communicate with internet. This is done through SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) which gives the local network the ability to send and receive emails over internet.  The default port set for SMTP is port 25. To make the network more secured, the port 25 can be disables and can be changed to port 587.  Here is how to configure port 587 on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

Start the Exchange System Manager

Click on the start menu and select ‘All Programs’.  Look for Microsoft Exchange Server in the programs list. Select it and another list appears.  Click on ‘Exchange System Manager’ available in the list. This starts the System manager and opens a window.

Open the Properties Window

Once the Exchange System Manager starts, locate the server name on the left side of the screen. Click on the server name and expand the tree. Click on the protocols folder. The tree expands. Click on the SMTP folder. In the SMTP folder, you’ll find “Default SMTP Virtual Server”. Right click on it and select properties. This opens properties window.

Change the Listening Port of SMTP to Port 587

In the properties window click on ‘General’ tab. You’ll find and ‘Advanced’ button. Click on it and then click on the ‘Edit’ button. Here you’ll find the TCP port set to default port 25. Next to label ‘TCP Port’ you’ll find a text box.  Change it to port 587 and click ‘OK’. Now the virtual server is configured to listen to the port 587.

Change the Outbound Port of SMTP to Port 587

In the properties tab, click on the ‘Delivery’ tab. You’ll find a button ‘Outbound Connections. Click on the button. The default TCP port is set to Port 25. Next to label ‘TCP Port’ you’ll find a text box. Change it to port 587 and click ‘OK’. Now the virtual SMTP server is configured to send outbound traffic to Port 587.

Quit the Exchange System Manager

Once the changes are made, click ‘OK’ in the main properties window to save the changes. Quit the Exchange System Manager. This enables changes in configuration to take place.

Now the Microsoft Exchange Server is configured to use Port 587 for communication with the internet.

How to install and configure Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server Enterprise

Installing Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is not an easy task and is quite difficult especially if you are new to it. However gaining enough knowledge, one can try to install the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. Here are the instructions to install it.

Start the Set up

  • Log on to the server on which the installation needs to be done. Installing exchange server 2003 needs administrative rights. Hence use an account which has complete administrative rights. Using the account which was used while running Exchange 2003 ForestPrep is a better option since that account has gained full administration rights.
  • Insert the Exchange Server 2003 installation CD into the CD Rom drive
  • Click on the start menu of your system and select the ‘Run’. Type E:\setup\i386\setup if E is your CDROM drive. Else replace E with the drive corresponding to CDROM.

Run the Installation Wizard

  • Installation wizard opens and you’ll see a welcome screen. Click on next. Here you’ll be prompted to agree the licensing agreements. Read the agreement and click on ‘I agree’ and click next.
  • Now you are taken to product identification page. Enter the 25-digit product key and click next.
  • Then opens the component selection page. On the component selection page, you’ll find a list of actions with component names. Assign proper actions to each component. Click on next to continue.
  • That takes you to the installation page. Here you’ll find two options. One is to create new exchange organisation and the other is to upgrade the existing exchange organisation. Since you are installing for the first time select ‘Create New Exchange Organization’. Then click on next.
  • You are the taken to the Organization name page. Here you’ll find a text box to enter organization name. The length of the organization name must have atleast 1 character and not exceed 64 characters. Alphabets (both upper and lower case), numbers, symbols like hyphen and dash and space are allowed to be used in Organization name. The Organization name once entered cannot be changed Hence, be careful to choose a proper organization name and go to next.
  • On clicking next, you will be directed to the liense agreement page. Read the terms and conditions and confirm agreeing to the licensing requirements.
  • You’ll find installation summary page where you’ll be required to confirm that the choice you made are correct. Check for the choices and click next.
  • The installation begins. It takes sometime to install the whole server. You will know the progress of the installation through the progress bar displayed on the screen which tells about the current actions. Once the installation is complete, click finish to complete the process. You will be prompted to restart the system. Click yes to restart the system.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is installed on your computer and ready to use. Once the installation is complete troubleshoot to find if the installation was successfully done.

How to Configure Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

How can you configure Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

Microsoft exchange servers can accept email traffic from domains that are identical to the active directory domain. To receive emails from other domains, the Microsoft Exchange Server 203 needs to be configured.  Configuring Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is not a difficult task. A little knowledge can make the job a lot easier. Here is how you can do it.

Add the Internet Domain Name to Recipient Policies

The SMTP server rejects the mails from servers other than those entered in the recipient policies. Hence it is necessary to add the domain names to recipient policies in order to receive mails from other domains.

Open the Exchange System Manager. Open the ‘Recipients’ folder. Then click on ‘Recipient Policies’. Here you’ll find one ‘default policy’. Right click on the ‘default policy’ and select properties. Select the ‘Email addresses’ tab. Here you’ll find the names of domains which are supported by your system. Click on the new button and select ‘SMTP address’ from the list shown and click ‘OK’. Enter the name of the domain you want to add preceded by ‘@’ symbol and click ‘OK’ button. Now the new domain name will be shown in the recipient policies. Enable it by selecting the check box beside it. On clicking ‘OK’ you will be asked if you want to update all recipient email addresses. Select ‘Yes’.

Configure SMTP Server for Incoming Mails

Click on the “Server’ folder of Exchange System Manager. Select protocols -> SMTP. Right click on ‘Virtual default server for SMTP’ and select properties. In the properties window select the ‘Access’ tab. Click on ‘Authentication’ button and select ‘Anonymous access’. Then click on connections and select either to allow or deny access to the list of IP addresses. Add the list by clicking the add button. Choose the ‘Messages’ tab. Here you can restrict the number of messages, size of messages and the number of recipients per message. Make appropriate selection to suit your requirements. Click on the ‘Delivery’ tab. Here you can set time intervals for retry, delay, expiry etc. Once the necessary changes are made, click ‘OK’.

Configure SMTP Server for Outgoing Mails

SMTP server must be added for handling outgoing mails to the internet. Right click on the ‘connectors’ folder and select New-> STMP Connector. Add a name to create a new SMTP connector. Right click on the new SMTP connector and select properties. Click on the ‘General’ tab. Here you need to choose whether you want all the outgoing mails directly to recipients i.e. through DNS or if you want all the mails to be sent through SMTP server. If you choose the second option, add a local server. Click on the address space and add wildcard “*” to let emails to any domain. Entering a value for cost is essential when you want to send mails to certain domains through a different route. In such cases you’ll be required to create a number of SMTP connectors. The cost entry of the connector to the special domain route must be set to a lower value. If you want to authenticate the SMTP server, you can set Username and password by clicking on the ‘Advanced’ tab.

Configure Users Email Addresses

Open ‘active directory users and computers’ directory. Right click on users and select New->User. Add the details and click next. Select the server and mailbox store and click finish. This will create user to log on to the exchange server and also the mailbox. To add the required email address, right click on the user and select properties. On the properties window, select the email addresses tab. Click on the address to be selected as primary address and click ‘Select As Primary’ tab. You can even add additional emails if necessary.

Configuring POPcon to receive emails from POP3 or IMAP

From the start menu select Programs->POPcon. Select the server and click on ‘Configure Selected Server’. Enter the email address of administrator in the ‘Postmaster’ field. Click on POP3/IMAP tab. Click ‘Add’ to add POP3 hosts. Add accepted recipient domains in the field below. Fill the POP3 server settings for all the POP3 hosts created. Then click on the ‘Exchange’ tab and configure the SMTP server name to which the mails need to be directed. Click ‘OK’ when done.

Once all the steps are completed, test if the new configuration is working fine. This can be done by opening the POPcon administrator main screen and clicking on ‘Trigger Mail Retrieval’ and start for the mail download. Check for error messages if any.
