How to Defragment an iMac

The process of disk optimization and Defragmentation in Mac OS collectively represent an issue and a matter of debate over repairing the disk permissions. According to Apple’s advice, there exist two scenarios in which you may need defragmentation of your drive. These two conditions determine the extent of defragmentation needed by your iMac PC. First you may have many numbers of large files and the second one is that your disk may low on disk space i.e. it may be more than 90% full of the total hard drive space. If these are your only concerns, then there are some remedies for you which may help you out to get out of trouble.

In the case you have myriad large files then you can easily create a back up of your important data. Basically everything except the files of operating system, then you have to re-install the Mac OS and then restore files from your backup. It seems somewhat tedious but actually this would result in a faster access to your large files. If you don’t like to do all this, you can use simple utilities like Super Duper! To make a exact clone of your startup drive, then you have to simply format the hard drive using the Apple’s Disk Utility that is located in Applications or Utilities and then you can copy your files back.

Steps to follow up while defragmenting a hard disk drive on iMac Pc:

Open Disc Utility program, located in “Utilities” folder of “Applications” directory. Highlight hard drive from list and have program repair. This is quite an easy and common way to correct some of common errors which may slow down your hard disk drive.

Now look for the program to defragment your computer hard disk drive. Also there are some absolutely free utilities that can run on Mac hard disk drive but you should take care of a program or utility, you are going to buy. You should keep in mind about the stability and support of the program that comes along with your purchased product. Some commonly used Defragmentation programs include the Disc Warrior and iDefrag.

Go to the previous steps to make a back up of your data before you go to defrag a hard disk drive of Mac OS. The chances of Data loss is negligible with well-known and respected programs but still defragmentation process takes a long time as it is a extensive process.

After defragging the Mac hard disk drive, the performance of your computer and the hard drive will be improved. Opening of the applications and large files would be much faster than before. If the hard drive of your Mac pc is occupied more than 75 percent, then the increase in performance will be more noticeable.

How to Defragment Your Hard Drive in Windows 7

Since the days of Windows 9x Microsoft has been providing a tool which is very effective in reducing the read/write time of the hard drive. This tool is the Disk Defragmenting tool known as Disk Defragmenter(defrag.exe). With the course of time and usage the data on the hard drive gets scattered. This happens because we create files, we save files, and we keep on deleting files. File deletion results in empty clusters in the hard drive and this empty space is again used for saving the new files. Let us understand fragmentation by an example. Lets assume there are 10 clusters on a hard drive and these are being used by three files A, B, and C. File A is occupying clusters 1-3, file B is written on clusters 4-5 and similarly file is C is on 6-8 and clusters 9 and 10 are empty. Now if we delete file B the clusters 4 and 5 becomes empty. Further if we have to save a new file (file D) which needs 4 clusters to get saved then the operating system will save half of the file D on clusters 4 and 5 and rest on 9 and 10. This makes the file D fragmented and whenever you will access the file D it will be accessed from two different locations and thus it increases the read time. The Disk Defragmenter fixes this by rearranging all the files in sequential clusters, and reduces the read/write time on the hard drive thus resulting in high operational speed of your computer. I still remember the graphical interface of Disk Defragmenter which was there in Windows 98 it actually displayed all the clusters of hard drive as blocks and displayed the real-time arrangement done by the defragmenter.

Like all the predecessors Windows 7 also has Disk Defragmenter in it, which keeps on rearranging the files on real-time basis in the background. But if we want to run it manually then we can do the same by going to Start menu and opening the All programs list. In All Programs list open the Accessories sub menu and then the System Tools. In System Tools menu you will find the Disk Defragmenter tool. Running this utility would require administrator privileges and only after that the utilities window will come up. Once the Window is up just click on Defragment now and it will do all the re-arranging itself. Unlike Windows 9x or Windows 2K the Defragmenter of Windows 7 does not show the defragment happening and does it silently in the background.

Disk Defragment does not move all the files, and the files which are address specific (like booting files and boot code data) stays untouched. It is wise to run disk cleanup before running the defragmenter because if you delete unused files from a defragmented disk then it will again create fragments of free space. Disk cleanup tool can also be found at the same location, which is Start menu, then All Programs, then Accessories, and then System Tools.

How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP

Windows XP uses Disk Defragmenter MMC. This defragmenter oriented from the full sellable version of Executive Software Diskeeper. In the Windows XP version, it provides partial functionality in sustain relatively working disk performance simply by means of getting to defragment many volumes that are using the FAT, FAT32 or NTFS file system. You can start the Disk Defragmenter MMC using one of three methods that will be explained in detail in this article.

The First Method: Using Properties on the Local Disk

1.    If you plan on using the first method, you should first open the My Computer folder.
2.    After this, locate the local disk volume that you plan on defragmenting. After you do this, right-click the icon and click on Properties.
3.    Here you will find several tabs. What you want to do is click on Tools. There will be a button saying Defragment Now. Click this and observe as your disk defragmentation

The Second Method: Making Use of Computer Management MMC

1.    Start Computer Management MMC by typing Compmgmt.msc on the command prompt or at the Start Bar, you can click Run.
2.    After you do this, click on Disk Defragmenter.
3.    Click the volume that you wish to undergo defragmenting and then you are supposed to click Defragment.

The Third Method: Using the Disk Defragmenter MMC

1.    Just like with the second method, you can start the Disk Defragmenter MMC by typing in Dfrg.msc on the command prompt or at the Start bar, you can click Run.
2.    Choose the volume that you want to use, after that you can click Defragment.

If you are going to make use of the very effective Disk Defragmenter MMC on Windows XP, then you should be aware that it has several restrictions:

•    The first is that the Disk Defragmenter MMC can only defragment local volumes.
•    It can defragment just one volume in every occurrence.
•    You cannot defragment one disk volume if you are in the process of scanning another.
•    There is no scheduling of defragmentation like in the newer OS. If you require scheduling of disk defragmentation, you can make use of what is called as the Defrag.exe command line tool. If you need to know more about the command Defrag.exe tool, you can look at its site, Definition of the New Command Line Defrag.exe that comes with the Windows XP set in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.•    The last restriction would be that you can run only one MMC program at a time.

These third-party products that have been discussed in the article are all manufacture by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft does not carry any responsibility in the purchase and use of these products whatsoever. So now that you have the information needed to defragment your disk drives on your XP OS, you will be relieved to know that you can always aid in the maintenance and performance of your computer even without taking it to repair shops and technicians.

How to Speed up a Windows XP Computer

Speed up your system through various simple ways

The performance of every system tends to degrade with the passage in time, if it is not properly maintained. The windows XP based system is no exception from it. Even its performance degrades with the passage of time. But this can be fended off if it is been taken proper care of. This would not only save money but also another precious thing called Time.

There are various ways in which a user can speed up his system. Some simple ways include regularly checking up the system for various kinds of Spyware and viruses which are generally the root cause for the slowdown that most of the users experience worldwide. The user should regularly update the anti-spyware program, and the virus definition files. There are other ways too like

  • Using a browser that have options of deleting the history of the surfed net which help in increasing the internet speed and also less viable to virus attacks.
  • Defragmenting your Hard disk. This process puts up related files close to each other so that considerable amount of free space can be accumulated on the hard disk. To Defragment a disk go to RUN type “dfrg.msc” and then start the defragment process.
  • One can also speed up the system using the disk cleanup utility. This utility compresses the files and creates disk space. We can use it by typing “cleanmgr.exe” in RUN.
  • The user can also remove unwanted software and programs that occupy a lot of physical memory. This can be done through Control Panel and going to Add/Remove program option and removing the unwanted programs or software.
  • When the system boots it also starts a few applications along with it. These applications occupy considerable resources of your system and so they should be blocked from auto starting using the “msconfig” command in RUN. Go to Startup options and block those applications which are not needed every time the system boots itself. There are various software applications which can be used to do the same thing. The System can also be helped by booting faster by changing the time out value in “BOOT.INI” option in “msconfig”.

The system graphics are another factor that affects the system speed. The graphics can be minimized so that the processing time of the system gets better.

The system performance can also be increased by ending many unused process that run in the background of the system. This can be done by clicking on the “process tab” which can be found in the Windows Task Manager.

The above mentioned ways are the simplest of the ways by which a user can speed up his system. But while doing so there are various things that should be kept in mind. All the above mentioned process can cause your system some critical problems if not executed properly. The user should take some precautions before performing the mentioned ways. The Basic step is to create a backup of important data that are stored in the system. User must be careful enough not to stop any process that is a system requirement as this may stop the system from booting and cause many problems.

Thus, one can say the speeding up a system is an easy task if and only if performed with proper precautions.
