How to Mount a Camera in Linux

Taking a digital camera along while going on a vacation with family or friends is something which almost everyone follows, to capture the essence of the trip. After coming back from the vacation, one of the first things people do is to load the pictures taken into the computer to see how well they have been developed and captured. Then these pictures are shared and sent across to friends and relatives to share your experiences.

To transfer pictures from a digital camera to Linux is a very simple and fast process. Linux is one of the few operating systems that have the ability to mount your camera with all of the pictures on it, making it seem as if it was just another folder on your desktop.

Instructions to mount a camera in Linux

By following these below instructions, you would be having a great time in enjoying all the latest pictures taken were first taken and then transferred to the Linux machine.

Step 1: Switch off / power off the camera to begin with.

Step 2: Most cameras come with a USB cable, which you need to connect first to the camera and then to the computer.

Step 3: Power on the camera and Linux would automatically detect the new hardware and mount the camera’s memory card.

Step 4: If it automatically loads on your desktop, double click on the mounted folder. However, you would need to navigate to the drive using your favourite file manager in case the mounted folder doesn’t show up automatically.

Step 5: When you are done, power off the camera again; this would disconnect the mounted drive from Linux.

Step 6: To end the process, disconnect the USB cable from the computer and the camera.

If the procedure explained above wasn’t of much help to you, you can alternatively follow some other steps to ensure the mounting of a USB camera on Linux

Step 1: Switch off or power off your camera and then plug one end of the USB cord into the camera and the other end into an empty USB port. Then you need to power on the camera again to see if the system recognizes it. If an icon comes up on the desktop, it means that the system has recognized it and the camera has automounted. Now you just need to click on the icon for viewing its contents.

Step 2: Open a command shell, type ‘sudo fdisk –l’, and then press Enter. A list of plugged in physical drives would be displayed and you can locate your device from the list. To create a mount point on the drive, type ‘sudo mkdir /media/external’ into the command shell.

Step 3: Type in ‘sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/external -o uid=1000,gid=100,utf8,dmask=027,fmask=137’,  to replace ‘dev/sdb1’ with the name of the device that was found in the previous step. This would mount your USB camera effectively.

To make sure that there is no damage to the camera while following these instructions, the camera should be turned off while being plugged into the computer or being unplugged.

Top tips for organizing your digital photo collection

Days are gone when we used to use the cameras with image roles in it. With these roles one could only click a fixed number of pictures and then get them developed at a photo studio and then organize in some album. Now such cameras are becoming history and more and more people are switching to Digital cameras. Digital camera give us the liberty to click as many images as we want, it allows us to manage the sharpness, brightness, and contrast while clicking the picture, it helps us in taking the picture straight to our computer so that the softcopy can be shared with others without getting it scanned by a scanner. Digital Camera has given us a whole new dimension of personal or professional photography, but since we can click numerous pictures without bothering of the development charges, we end up in a mess of too many images. You might open your Pictures folder and would see hundreds of photographs and would definitely want a way to organize them and keep them in separate albums.

In this post I will discuss some tips how you can organize Digital Photos on your computer.

Use different folders – Pictures of different occasions should be kept in different folders/albums so that it is always easy for you to find the relevant pictures whenever required. If you put the pictures in the same folder then there would be many images in the same folder and you might not be able to find the required picture instantly.

Use naming conventions – Try renaming all the files from same date or occasion in similar way. Like Birthday1. Birthday2, and so on so that you always view the files in sequence and should be able to search them quickly. Bulk renaming can be easily done in windows by opening the folder where pictures are located and selecting all the pictures which you want to rename. After selecting them right click on the first file and give it a name of your choice and press enter. You will find that all files will get renamed by that name with a number series post-fixed in the file name.

Try deleting duplicate images – People often take multiple shots to get the best out of it but then do not delete the other shots and keep all of them stored on their computers. Always make sure that you only keep the best shot on your computer and delete the others. This will help you have less number of good shots and will also not consume high volume of disk space on your hard drive.

Label your Photos – Whenever you attach the digital camera the Digital Image Suit comes up automatically. This suit gives you various options to Label the pictures, add captions, and add keywords to them. To know what these are just open folders in which you have some images and then select any image. At the bottom in the explorer window you will find the information like, image size, dimensions, tags, keywords etc about that photo. This Meta information can also be used for searching for any image and to keep them separate from each other.

Though there can be many depending upon your working style, but these were some basic tips to help you in organizing the digital photographs so that you can visit your memories in the best possible manner.

Digital camera can access WIFi technology with memory card

Treasuring memories has never been this special – and innovative. Computers nowadays are growing and improving year by year, with much features adding up for ease and convenience. But just recently, a new and improved gadget have now evolved and turned a present gadget into a much more convenient way to use.

People love to take pictures for keeping and memory purposes. From this, cameras where invented and presented to the market. But as high and quality technology have influenced the current era, from traditional film cameras – where film cartridges are used, Digital cameras were born.

These Digital cameras were then used to take pictures (without the use of film cartridges anymore). With its cost-effective and more convenient way to upload pictures, it was embraced by the people and consumers as a whole.

Gone were the film cartridges, you can easily upload the pictures taken through USB cable of the camera or by the use of its memory card. With compatible applications to aid your means of transfer, you can now place your taken pictures to where you want it to share, whether on social networks or other site like your Flickr and Facebook.

But a latest discovery has made these digital cameras into a much evolved form of easy use and transfer of pictures – the invention of Eye-Fi.

What is Eye-Fi?

Inspired by a memory card type device, this SD card is 4-8 gigabytes that will replace the old memory card of your digital camera.

But what is its difference from the old one?

It has a built-in 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi which allows you to easily upload pictures within a Wi-Fi range area or “hotspots”. With this highly innovative invention or creation, you can now say goodbye to uploading process using USB cables or old memory cards.

How is does it work?

Content includes the memory card reader wherein you will insert the card and connect to a USB port in your computer device and configure it from there. You can set the process of transfer by choosing how will the process do and where do pictures be put into for uploading.

You don’t have to worry though for there are many sites to choose from for downloading.

After configuring your card or device, you can now insert it into your digital cameras and it will be ready for pictures. The pictures taken will automatically format to JPEG files and automatically scaled to fit in desired size.

When you are along a hotspot place, your pictures will then be uploaded, after taking, into your desired storage or share site. Wi-Fi range or hotspots are almost anywhere on commercial markets for the purpose of drawing more people or to function well for the consumers. So this would not be a hard to find places.

Now with this invention up and ready for the market, people will now enjoy more on taking and uploading pictures without giving a hard time undergoing so much process.

With the Eye-Fi memory card, easy picture taking and uploading has never been this easy and enjoyable.

Google’s Tryst at a Better iPad

As we all know Google is one of the biggest players IT companies in the world. And though few years ago Google and Apple were in very good relations with each other, this was until the new boom of ultra mobile devices with OS – the iPad, iPhone and the latest iPad caused some problems. Google decided to try and enter in Apple’s niche with the developing of the Nexus – a direct competitor to iPhone. It seems they are also interested in entering the iPad sphere – ultra mobile tablets, too.

Though extremely popular, the iPad has many issues which should be addressed if Google wants to have any success at all, and not share the fate of Microsoft’s Zune Player. The iPad – though shiny little piece of tech, has few big problems. Main two are well known, others surfaced with time.

What Google should address first is the lack of full Adobe Flash support. Although HTML5 is on the way, there is still plenty of time until its effects part gains the same popularity and support as Adobe Flash. And as this type of device is intended for fun and spare time, adding Flash support will be the right thing to do. The other main disadvantage of iPad – the lack of full multitasking support should be addressed until the end of the year, but as for now, no such thing exists, except for some system and Apple developed apps running in background.

Another issue, especially for such type of device, is the lack of video capture options. What Google should include is at least front facing camera, for video calls – it is 21-st century after all. The rear facing high resolution camera is also good option, but not such necessity, this is not a small device, and probably no one will use it or digital camera on the go.

Also lots of other minor and not so minor issues can be addressed. Though the iPad browser – Safari is not bad, excluding the lack of Flash support, with no tabbed browsing it seems a little outdated – Chrome is a good way to go. Talking about apps – full access to Google apps, as office tools, could be an advantage. Of course there are other minor things that can be fixed – the iPad glossy screen is hard to use in direct sunlight, and you want to carry such ultra portable computer anywhere with you, and be able to use it without problems. The file management system can also be improved, in fact maybe creating new from scratch is the best idea, and this sphere in software development can use some totally new ideas. Also – if more operators but Verizone offer it, this will be best for the customer, and will reflect on prices immediately.

The ultra mobile tablets are whole new zone of the market, and Google has a good chance to be one of the main players in it. If they invest little time and money, they can come out with exceptional piece of technology, that will come to every home.

The Ins And Outs Of Digital Cameras

Technology has undergone incredible advancements over the past few years, and digital cameras are no exception. Gone are the days where the photographer stood under a black sheet to take a photograph that took days to develop. These days, digital cameras make it easy for you to take and share photos.

What is a digital camera?

A digital camera is a device that allows you to capture pictures in terms of bytes and bits. This is the language that computers understand, and therefore these pictures can be uploaded on your computers. The picture is made up of tiny dots called pixels, each having a certain color to them. Like a normal camera, a digital camera still has a lens in order to focus and capture the images. This electronic information can then be broken down into digital data by a computer.

What is the resolution?

The resolution of a camera refers to the amount of detail that a camera can capture. This is measured in units called pixels. More the pixels of a camera and finer the picture quality will be. Camera’s 256×256 resolution totals 65000 pixels and this is what you will find with the cheapest cameras. Its 1216×912 resolution is a megapixel, which is great if you want to print pictures. The best digital camera will have a resolution of 4064×2704, which is a staggering 11.1 megapixels. With this you can print pictures that are13.5×9 inch, without losing the quality.

How do you take a picture?

Taking a photo with a digital camera is much the same as with a normal camera. Aim the camera at whatever you want to take a picture of, and use the optical zoom feature to go further away or get closer. When you are ready just press the shutter release button. The camera will focus and takes note of the amount of light available. It will then make the necessary changes to the exposure and the shutter will close. A processor then turns this data into pixels. With most digital cameras you will be able to view the picture you have taken on an LCD screen.

How many pictures can you take?

Each camera has a built in memory that will allow you to take a certain amount of pictures. You can expand this memory by using an SD card. The size of these cards range from a few hundred megabytes to a few gigabytes. All pictures you take will then are stored on there. You will be able to connect your camera to your computer using a data cable, or you can simply insert the SD card into the slot on your laptop. In this way you can transfer your photos and store them, email them or use them as wallpaper.

Digital cameras are indeed a blessing if you are used to taking loads of pictures. It will ensure that you get a great picture any time and will store as many as you want. It allows you to print pictures and send them to people all over the world. It is truly an all-in-one piece of technology.
