How to Mount a Camera in Linux

Taking a digital camera along while going on a vacation with family or friends is something which almost everyone follows, to capture the essence of the trip. After coming back from the vacation, one of the first things people do is to load the pictures taken into the computer to see how well they have been developed and captured. Then these pictures are shared and sent across to friends and relatives to share your experiences.

To transfer pictures from a digital camera to Linux is a very simple and fast process. Linux is one of the few operating systems that have the ability to mount your camera with all of the pictures on it, making it seem as if it was just another folder on your desktop.

Instructions to mount a camera in Linux

By following these below instructions, you would be having a great time in enjoying all the latest pictures taken were first taken and then transferred to the Linux machine.

Step 1: Switch off / power off the camera to begin with.

Step 2: Most cameras come with a USB cable, which you need to connect first to the camera and then to the computer.

Step 3: Power on the camera and Linux would automatically detect the new hardware and mount the camera’s memory card.

Step 4: If it automatically loads on your desktop, double click on the mounted folder. However, you would need to navigate to the drive using your favourite file manager in case the mounted folder doesn’t show up automatically.

Step 5: When you are done, power off the camera again; this would disconnect the mounted drive from Linux.

Step 6: To end the process, disconnect the USB cable from the computer and the camera.

If the procedure explained above wasn’t of much help to you, you can alternatively follow some other steps to ensure the mounting of a USB camera on Linux

Step 1: Switch off or power off your camera and then plug one end of the USB cord into the camera and the other end into an empty USB port. Then you need to power on the camera again to see if the system recognizes it. If an icon comes up on the desktop, it means that the system has recognized it and the camera has automounted. Now you just need to click on the icon for viewing its contents.

Step 2: Open a command shell, type ‘sudo fdisk –l’, and then press Enter. A list of plugged in physical drives would be displayed and you can locate your device from the list. To create a mount point on the drive, type ‘sudo mkdir /media/external’ into the command shell.

Step 3: Type in ‘sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/external -o uid=1000,gid=100,utf8,dmask=027,fmask=137’,  to replace ‘dev/sdb1’ with the name of the device that was found in the previous step. This would mount your USB camera effectively.

To make sure that there is no damage to the camera while following these instructions, the camera should be turned off while being plugged into the computer or being unplugged.

Days are gone when we used to use the cameras with image roles in it. With these roles one could only click a fixed number of pictures and then get them developed at a photo studio and then organize in some album. Use different folders – Pictures of different occasions should be kept in different folders/albums so that it is always easy for you to find the relevant pictures whenever required. If you put the pictures in the same folder then there would be many images in the same folder and you might not be able to find the required picture instantly.

Use naming conventions – Try renaming all the files from same date or occasion in similar way. Like Birthday1. Birthday2, and so on so that you always view the files in sequence and should be able to search them quickly. Bulk renaming can be easily done in windows by opening the folder where pictures are located and selecting all the pictures which you want to rename. After selecting them right click on the first file and give it a name of your choice and press enter. You will find that all files will get renamed by that name with a number series post-fixed in the file name.

Try deleting duplicate images – People often take multiple shots to get the best out of it but then do not delete the other shots and keep all of them stored on their computers. Always make sure that you only keep the best shot on your computer and delete the others. This will help you have less number of good shots and will also not consume high volume of disk space on your hard drive.

Label your Photos – Whenever you attach the digital camera the Digital Image Suit comes up automatically. Google’s Tryst at a Better iPad

As we all know Google is one of the biggest players IT companies in the world. And though few years ago Google and Apple were in very good relations with each other, this was until the new boom of ultra mobile devices with OS – the iPad, iPhone and the latest iPad caused some problems. Google decided to try and enter in Apple’s niche with the developing of the Nexus – a direct competitor to iPhone. It seems they are also interested in entering the iPad sphere – ultra mobile tablets, too.

Though extremely popular, the iPad has many issues which should be addressed if Google wants to have any success at all, and not share the fate of Microsoft’s Zune Player. The iPad – though shiny little piece of tech, has few big problems. Main two are well known, others surfaced with time.

What Google should address first is the lack of full Adobe Flash support. Although HTML5 is on the way, there is still plenty of time until its effects part gains the same popularity and support as Adobe Flash. And as this type of device is intended for fun and spare time, adding Flash support will be the right thing to do. The other main disadvantage of iPad – the lack of full multitasking support should be addressed until the end of the year, but as for now, no such thing exists, except for some system and Apple developed apps running in background.

Another issue, especially for such type of device, is the lack of video capture options. What Google should include is at least front facing camera, for video calls – it is 21-st century after all. The rear facing high resolution camera is also good option, but not such necessity, this is not a small device, and probably no one will use it or digital camera on the go.

Also lots of other minor and not so minor issues can be addressed. Though the iPad browser – Safari is not bad, excluding the lack of Flash support, with no tabbed browsing it seems a little outdated – Chrome is a good way to go. Talking about apps – full access to Google apps, as office tools, could be an advantage. Of course there are other minor things that can be fixed – the iPad glossy screen is hard to use in direct sunlight, and you want to carry such ultra portable computer anywhere with you, and be able to use it without problems. The file management system can also be improved, in fact maybe creating new from scratch is the best idea, and this sphere in software development can use some totally new ideas. Also – if more operators but Verizone offer it, this will be best for the customer, and will reflect on prices immediately.

The ultra mobile tablets are whole new zone of the market, and Google has a good chance to be one of the main players in it. If they invest little time and money, they can come out with exceptional piece of technology, that will come to every home.
