Welcome

Firefox 3.6 or Firefox 4? Run them together

If you have downloaded the Mozilla Corporations Firefox 4.0 beta version, you would have already noticed the improvements and the functionality of the beta version of the browser. However, if you just want to experience the new beta version of the browser and do not want it to run or work on beta version alone but use both versions of the browser at the same time; if you wanted to do this you would have noticed the problems. Here I will tell you, tricks so you can open both the older and the beta versions simultaneously and work, test, compare and experience.

Improvements from the past

Obviously Mozilla corporations Firefox 4.0 beta is not flawless; but it certainly has many-advanced functionality, which I personally is enjoying and looking forward to experience even better in the full version, when it is released. You can always download to test previous add-ons that you were used to on to the new Firefox beta 4.0.  If you been using the Firefox 4.0 beta, you would already know about the cosmetic changes like the tab display changes, button features for bookmark and the change in stop and refresh key, which had be merged into one; the enhanced crash protection for all supported platforms on Windows, Linux and Mac. Along with several web developer add-ons functionality with advanced API’s and new HD HTML support. Mozilla Firefox 4.0 is currently the only browser supporting WebM video format.

The drawbacks

The drawback is that you are not able to simultaneously run both versions at the same time, after you have downloaded the Firefox 4.0. You would have to exit from one of the version to operate the other. Also if you have noticed, when you download the new beta version, by default it saves all the profiles and bookmarks from your older Mozilla firebox; this suggests that it uses the same profile folder for both versions of the browser.

Quick fix

Here is what you need to do to run both versions of Mozilla corporations Firefox browser on your computer. Start by creating a shortcut for both versions on your desktop. Then under you Run box type thisC:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe –p –no-remote and hit enter. This will open a profile box where you can create profiles and name it accordingly for two versions of Firefox.  After saving the profile names right click on each versions shortcut key that you had created on the desktop and choose Properties. In the properties window click on Shortcut tab and at the end of the target field add this –p PROFILE –no-remote.  This will ensure each of the versions of Firefox can be opened at same time. By created profiles Mozilla Firefox will open its individual profile.

This way you can experience and work simultaneously on both versions of Firefox. So you can understand the difference, try and test and / or change or modify how you would like both versions of Mozilla Firefox to work for you; until the full version of Mozilla corporations Firefox 4.0 is released.

Nokia N900 users can now browse via Firefox

In the beginning of this month Mozilla Corporation released the Firefox 1.1(code named Fennec), for Nokia N900 and a new update making it compatible to be used on Nokia N810 Smartphone’s. The new browser is aimed at further improving the usability of the Nokia smartphone series.

Landscape and portrait

Firefox 1.1 is build on the same platform engine as the desktop version of Firefox 3.6, keeping in mind the optimise use of it on mobile phone. “As a result, polishing the user interface and improving UI responsiveness and performance is at the heart of this release”, says the Firefox team in the their release notes. The browser lets you view in both landscape and portrait and the zoom in/out feature of the speaker locker is very enticing .

I believe what I liked the most is the personalized start page which enables me to let me continue where I dropped off the last time. There are over 60 Add-ons which are available to be downloaded from the website or directly from the Add-on manager feature in the browser. Smart tapping features comes in very useful and the accuracy level while tapping links or widgets is certainly comment worthy.

Current issues

There have been complaints from users with the clarity of images while enlarging. Images when stretched appear with black dots and/or lines along the sides and towards the bottom of the image. There has also been cases reported while a zoomed page is been switched from its portrait mode to landscape the screen will displace the tab sidebar, which can be annoying at times.

However, what I find most frustrating is the inability to scroll down a lengthy webpage with the keyboard. I hope it is fixed soon by the team and they are certainly aware of this drawback.

On the bright side

For the readers who does not have either Nokia N900 or N810, Mozilla team has announced that they are in their early development phase to enable users throughout all series of smart-phones.

The Browser is still new but packed with several beneficial features even enabling the save to PDF option, where by those important documents can be downloaded and directly saved. Users can also save or delete the passwords to sites they no longer use, enabling a higher security and the add search engine in the site menu will help add / remove a search engine. Also, the context menu lets us open new tabs and save images with just a slightly prolonged tap and holding a link. So the new browser is certainly download worthy and striving towards helping us improve our Nokia N900 and N810 phones.

Check Out the New Crash Protection Enabled Firefox 4.0 for Mac

I just updated my current Firefox 3.6 with the new beta Firefox 4.0 it certainly has visible differences. Based on the previous version Firefox 3.7, Mozilla Corporation released for the Mac platform its new beta of Firefox 4.0 (revision 1) earlier last week. The release is with new and improved crash protection and is loaded with several other features, and more to be added when the final product is released, which is set for later.

Feature highlight

Of course, the major highlight is the Crash Protection that is activated automatically during a crash due to Apple Quicktime, Adobe Flash and/or Microsoft Silverlight plugins, enabling an uninterrupted browsing experience. I did not first realize this had happened until I realized the browser automatically refreshed the website with a Flash plug-in, I suppose Flash could have crashed and the new crash protection kicked in without restarting the browser.

What else is new?

They have merged both stop and reload buttons to a single button. At first I found it puzzling since I could not find the refresh arrow key on the browser while a page was loading, but as soon the page was loaded the stop (X) was replaced with the refresh arrow sign. The bookmarks can either be switched to either as a toolbar or a button, which is now set to be default on the new version. Also the History link lookup is done asynchronously so the page can be loaded with better response time and uses lazy frame construction for better rendering. And for my geeky readers, the browser also features new Addons Manager and extension API, new HTML5 parser and HTML5 form controls, native support for HD HTML5 WebM video format, also supports WebSockets and a full WebGL support, which needs to be manually enabled, since it is disabled by default. For the artists out there, the browser’s new plug-ins for Core animation rendering tool model can draw better and efficiently.

To come later and existing issues

The new release currently is only available in English, however will later be available in more languages with the final release. The extension management API UI will be updated before the final release as well. Also new Add-ons will be introduced later and the exciting ones from previous versions have not been fully tested with the new beta version, however users can opt to install the add-on Compatibility Reporter for help test.

The most unsatisfactory of all for me in the new browser is their issue with bookmarks. For users like me who is comfortable having a bookmark toolbar, did find it quite uneasy when by default the version changed the whole bookmark into a button without actually giving me an option while updating. Also there have been instances for the browser to crash if opened with locked profiles. The Firefox team also have reported browser needing a restart once toolbars menu has been customized, especially after updating the bookmark toolbar options.
