Next-generation smartphones from Samsung®

Samsung has launched many smart phones in the market for CDMA and GSM users. Recently Samsung also launched the Galaxy Tab. Many of the smart phones runs on the Android operating system. This is also the main reason for the fast growth in the market for Samsung. Many of the phones are equipped with the latest features like Wi-Fi, 3G, cameras, touch screen, and lots more. Samsung provides the Android operating system for most of its smart phones. Because of Android, the performance of the phone is increased tremendously and user also gets very good using features.

Samsung is now releasing the next generation of its smart phone, Samsung Galaxy. The next version is the Samsung Galaxy S smart phone. Recently, at CES 2011, Samsung launched Samsung Infuse 4G. The Galaxy S uses the LTE 4G technology. AMOLED Plus touch screens are used in these phones. The smart phone is also equipped with a 8-mega pixel camera and has the ability to shoot video on a High Definition (HD) mode of 1080p. This phone also comes with HDMI output so it is possible to watch high definition videos and pictures directly from phone by connecting to a PC or television. Samsung Galaxy S also has highly efficient processors that provide an excellent experience to users.

Galaxy S Android™ 2.2 stalled by Samsung® upgrade charge

With more and more new products hitting the market and service providers / carriers being the medium to promote these products / firmware, an interesting question has surfaced on the method of some manufacturers trying to charge for their OS and software upgrades. It has been reported that Samsung, a key player in the tablet market, along with Apple, HTC, Motorola and others, have been withholding Android 2,2 upgrades, due to their expectation of an upgrade charge from carriers.

Before we continue on the above issue, let us review the definition of upgrades and how different players for different equipment have been working their way around this issue. Whenever a new product is introduced into the market, the developers work around a set of features to be provided, and dump the product into the market announcing an edge over all the other players. Naturally, the phenomenal amount of work put in by hordes of developers culminating into a product would definitely have various bugs which would need fixes based on research and also reports from users. Here the manufacturer decides to provide updates of three types – critical updates, maintenance updates and feature updates.

Critical updates are needed to resolve a critical bug in the product. Maintenance updates are routine updates, to take care of bugs and other issues reported by the carrier. Finally feature updates are included in addition to new features in the software that were not available earlier in the product. Generally, critical updates are free. A manufacturer would not like to have bad publicity due to serious problems. For the overheating of a phone, a company may provide free upgrades to resolve the issue. On the other hand, maintenance could have a maintenance fee attached to them, but generally nominal in nature. Feature updates are always costly and expensive. Only users needing the specific features, giving them an edge in their operation would be willing to shell out that extra bit.

Most updates would be critical or maintenance updates and users and carriers never objected to any such thing. On the other hand, feature updates, are ones that carriers never want to incur the cost of, because of very small benefits to them, adding very little to the device, on the other hand involving phenomenal amount of testing on the carrier end.

Since the Android open source project is under constant updating and such information is also being made available to the world across the Internet, there is severe pressure for the devices to be constantly updated with the newest version of Android. Erstwhile, manufacturers like HTC, and Motorola have been providing this as maintenance upgrades. Samsung however, calls it a feature update. Samsung requires carriers to pay per device update fee for each additional Android update. Carriers in the US believe that Android updates are based on Android open source project efforts, and Samsung’s involvement is minimal. Several US carriers have refused to pay for the Android 2.2 updates for the Samsung Galaxy S line.

Samsung® may not charge for Froyo Android™ update

Recently, there were reports regarding Samsung and all US carriers going head on with regard to fees for updates which allegedly Samsung was demanding from the carriers on a per device updation basis. Interestingly neither has Samsung accepted these rumors nor have denied them. In a news item, a spokesperson for Samsung stated that they will not be charging carriers for Froyo updates to Galaxy S.

Even after Samsung had sold more than 4 million Galaxy S handsets in the US, the Froyo updates for the same have been delayed, leaving the product with the Android 2.1 till date. Owners of Samsung phones with Android are not sure about the standoff between carriers and Samsung. Some posts show that the Galaxy S will be ready for the Froyo updates in March 2011.

There is no doubt Android 2.3, the Gingerbread OS is on its way. Developers are looking at introduction of the updates as they happen. No doubt Google is also working behind the scenes to make it happen as quick as is required. One could also notice the development interface getting updated bringing high resolution graphics to the forefront along with promotional videos. Maybe the Android market is getting ready to change as a whole.

In fact the whole smart phone and tablet market appears upbeat. The introduction of the browser based touch screen phones and many interesting predictions for the future appear to be growing into a gamut of business opportunities. Once again the open source project community , Android, Google and manufacturers like Samsung and others need to come to a proper consensus on making the newly developed operating systems and updates available to the users without delays and that too, over a wide spectrum of Android based device manufacturers.
