Google™ TV for EDU offers education through web and TV

Google is and has always been known as an innovative group of professionals, who even within their organization promote creativity and lay maximum stress on education as a culture. Trust Google to enter the education field with their Google Apps Education Training Center and their 5 billion dollar education project for schools. The websites of Google provide the foundation for sharing and displaying education projects for students and the faculty.

With the technology explosion and convergence of the computer, smartphone, TV and the Internet, education through web and TV is becoming a reality. The Google TV team is trying to partner with various institutions around the world, promoting the Google TV for EDU program through the web and TV.

With the fairly large success of Google Logitech Revue, smartphones, search engines and the Android open source community, this is one area that will see lot of developments and growth in the near future. Bringing Google TV to campuses has brought about a new found interest in smart TV curriculum and innovative educational tools. With Android there to support, it is definitely on the right path. The research in consideration with live applications going on-screen of the Google TV at educational institutions, is a large source of education. The implications on revenue generation through this unique social and technological cause are also mind-boggling. Besides, this is just the tip of the iceberg, since any such far-fetched and exhaustive perspective is going to have implications of use, misuse, security etc., even considering the fact that the far-reaching growth in education is inevitable.

Internet TV devices: A comparison

The CES 2011 demonstrated several products and technologies for gadget geeks, book publishers, entertainment providers, computer manufacturers, smartphone manufacturers, TV manufacturers, gaming manufacturers and more. The one most common product used by billions of people around the world, the TV, is also getting an interesting transformation with the interfacing of the same with the Internet.

According to officials of Google, like Android, the Google TV will be an adventure where the TV meets the web, apps, search and the world’s creativity. Being an open software platform, the Google TV will be able to work with any TV and before long, anyone will be able to build applications for it. Like the computer and the smartphone, the TV will also have a home page and you will also be able to use your phone as a remote control, browse the web, watch TV shows and clips from the Internet on your TV set.

Let us have a small review and compare Google TV (Logitech Revue), Boxee, Roku and Apple TV. As regards resolution of Internet TV devices, the Apple TV has it as 720 in comparison to the other three as 1080. Wi-Fi networking is available on all four and also wired networking. While Google TV, Boxee and Apple TV offer full web browsing, Roku enables high speed streaming. As in the case of Apple you can get it at $40. The other interesting area for a vast population the world over is social networking. As regards video calling, while Google is making it possible using a Logitech TV camera, Boxee and Roku do not have these features and Apple is probably developing the app using FaceTime. Facebook is available on Logitech Revue, Boxee and the Apple TV. An edge that Google TV (Logitech Revue) has over all the three others is the availability of the e-mail, while Boxee, Roku and Apple do not provide it. Picture viewing is available on all four. Apple TV may be providing games shortly, and the Roku has an application available, while the Boxee and Logitech Revue Google TV have it through interesting applications further announcing that gaming could be a major factor in the Android applications and via the browser in the Logitech Revue – Google TV. Streaming content – Amazon VOD, Netflix, YouTube and music – are available on all the four products. iTunes is available on the Apple TV and the Roku while Boxee does not support it.

While individual perceptions can change, one cannot but ignore the fact that, the Logitech Revue – Google TV seems to be having big aims in this specific internet TV device market, Boxee is not very far away and Apple is quite close in competition. The Roku device, of course aims at different segments of the market.

Logitech®: Google™ TV Getting App Store Soon

The app market has been in the center of news for almost a year now. First it was Apple, with their iPhone and iPad and their famous Apple App Store. This is one single window for the control of apps that can be delivered to an Apple device. With the app store in place, the smartphone got smarter, so isn’t it time for the Google TV to get smarter also. Yes, Logitech, one of the key partners of Google responsible for the launch of the Google TV platforms, with their Logitech Revue has announced the long awaited Google TV App Store.

The Android is growing and beyond the smartphone and tablet markets, the Android is spreading its wings, slowly and steadily into the Google TV platform markets also. The Google TV platform is basically a combination of access to videos, shows, apps, websites, all on your HDTV at home, besides all your usual TV channels and the interesting Digital Video Recording facility.

The Google TV has not gained much acclaim and penetration into the market, due to the shortcomings of availability of the right apps for the product to spur the enthusiasm required in the non-tech user marketplace. Although the concept of smart TV is catching on slowly, various issues like bandwidth availability, personalization aspects from other Google services, functionality addition, set top box integration with Google TV support, methodologies of access to Pay TV content, Video On Demand content availability, quality issues etc. need to addressed carefully, before this conceptual change can take the market by storm.

After a series of launches of high profile devices, including the Google TV, Apple TV, Roku, Boxee and others, content is the main issue and Netflix seems to be, one of the major contenders in the US, with a decent reach. Amazon bought the European LoveFilm, a similar operator like Netflix in Europe announcing prime membership, commercial free, instant streaming of over 5000 movies and TV shows at no additional costs. Sony announced 5 new products powered by Google TV, Samsung launched products with processors in-built, with their eyes on Smart TV introduction. Google has been busy developing an array of web UI libraries for web designers’ optimization of their sites for Google TV. App developers on the Android market have been coming up with various apps to enhance user experience on the new platform. The Android smartphone apps and the Chrome Webstore have been fairly well developed as logical platforms by Google, however, the Google TV app platform is yet to become popular.

Announcements have been made by Logitech regarding the app market for the Google TV, towards better integration of the web and TV, with proposed capabilities and functionalities, including Live Tweeting during a television broadcast. This would definitely be a value addition to Google TV. A new perspective to IPTV is on the go.

Samsung® to support Google® TV with Blu-ray player

Samsung announced at CES 2011 that it is planning to develop a Blu-ray player and a set-top device, which are compatible with Google TV. The product is scheduled for a launch around June 2011. There will be a remote with the equipment with a QWERTY keyboard. It will allow voice searching through an inbuilt microphone. The new Blu-ray player and companion box were made available for testing throughout CES 2011.

Samsung Electronics on January 7, 2011 came together with Sony, Vizio and Logitech as one of the hardware partners for Google TV. Sony, currently selling Google TV-loaded sets and Blu-ray players, and Logitech selling just a companion box loaded with Google TV were a competition to the Samsung Blu-ray companion, while Vizio also showcased the Google TV sets and Blu-ray players at CES. Samsung is making available new Android-based smartphones as well as tablets to operate the Google TV appliances through a built-in IR blaster with a universal remote control application. Google TV is the search engine’s Android-based platform which will allow buyers to surf the Web through the Google Chrome browser while managing the television and DVR content with one interface that is coming with complete search and applications.

The users can for instance, watch a game of football and then open up a Web browser while they continue to watch the game in a small dual window facility which they can move around on the TV screen. According to people, reports of hardware delays were not true and were blown out of proportions, while Google is on track for releasing a special Android software development kit. This can be used by Google TV which enables its developers to write the applications for a larger screen. Much has been contemplated by the crowd at the CES Show and it remains to be seen how well is the product of Blu-ray player and companion box which supports Google TV.
