Reports Suggests 2 million U.S. computers affected by Botnets

According to a latest report of cyber security, by Microsoft the U.S. has the highest number of computers approximately 2 million that have been affected by botnets. In the second most affected botnets country Brazil tops the charts.

The report also suggests that there is growing number of infections in South Korea which may eventually takeover U.S.

The research was conducted by a Microsoft security think tank which is looking into the growing threat of malicious networks that seek to prove a potential hazard for Internet safety.

Botnets are basically downloaded instructions from a malicious server that sends these instructions in millions of packets throughout the world. They usually come attached with spam of phishing e-mails that seek potential users to download them. Users are not aware of the downloaded instructions. The botnets are then activated by the home server which gives them specific action e.g. to “e-mail bomb” a particular website of to seeks users information such as credit card information.

This study was carried by Microsoft as it is growing wary about the increasing amount of security hazards the may affect its operating systems. It seeks to release various patches to bolster its defenses against the botnets.

How to set up Linksys Security

Linksys is a very famous brand by CISCO that produces network products especially for their use in small offices and homes. Products sold under the brand include wireless and broadband routers, Ethernet switching, wireless video cameras, and network storage systems among other products.

Linksys routers are extremely popular and one of the best selling ones. The manufacturers develop routers of wide range with different options like wireless capabilities. However, no matter how different Linksys routers might be from one another, their configuration and security setup remains standard throughout.

Instructions to Set Up Linksys Security

The Linksys security can be set up and configured with the help of any standard Web Browser. Specific instructions can be followed in this regard.

Step 1: Before going ahead and accessing the configuration page through the web browser, it requires some physical setup. The Linksys router must be attached to the modem. An Ethernet cable needs to be plugged into the back of the router. However, make sure it is not plugged into any of the numbered ports but into the WAP port. The other end must be fixed into the RJ-45 jack on the modem. Then switch on the modem. After waiting for a minute, turn on the router.

Step 2: The next step involves connecting the computer to the Linksys router, using yet another Ethernet cable. This time plug one end of the cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the router. Fix the other end of the cable into the computer’s network jack. The physical setup is complete and now we move on to accessing the system’s web browser.

Step 3: Double click on the web browser icon (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox etc). The web page opens and the address bar at the top of the page is clicked. In the address window, type ‘’ and hit Enter.

Step 4: The system will prompt you to enter the Username and Password. Type ‘admin’ in both the fields as the default password and Login ID as in the case of every Linksys Router.

Step 5: Here, a password needs to be assigned to secure the wireless network. Click on ‘Wireless’ followed by ‘Basic Wireless settings’. The default network name is Linksys which must be changed to give the network another name of your choice. This would help to avoid confusion with other wireless networks in the vicinity. Save the settings and then click on ‘Wireless Security’ to set up a password.

Step 6: From the ‘Security mode’ drop down menu, select the ‘WPA Pre-Shared Key’. The ‘WPA Algorithms’ settings must be kept at default and then enter the chosen password in the ‘WPA Shared Key’ field. Make sure to write down the password in a secure location for remembrance and proceed to save your settings.

The Linksys and other routers enable the system and other ‘allowed for access’ computers for wireless and wired connections. However, it may be a futile exercise if the system isn’t security enabled. Follow the above instructions to protect the network against unwanted intruders.
