How to preserve notebook battery life

We often complain for poor battery performance our notebook computers. It drains fast as soon as the external power source is removed. But have ever thought that it we who is responsible for the same. We use the battery in such a manner that its life degrades with time and it is not able to deliver the performance which it could actually have given.

In this post I will discuss some practices which can extend the battery life and keep it running for as long as possible.

Step 1: Avoid unnecessary charging – We have a habit of charging the battery all the times. Avoid doing this. Battery should only be charged when it is completely drained out. There are batteries like Nickel Chromium batteries which remember the status of their charging and discharging. So if a battery is 50% charged and you try charging it again it will assume that you have to charge only 50% and will intimate you that it is fully charged thus reducing the battery life. So charge a battery only when it is fully drained. Avoid the habit of leaving the power connected to notebook all the times.

Step 2: Don’t Disconnect – Even if you are powering your notebook from its external power source, still you should not take the battery out of it. This maintains the maximum battery life of the notebook.

Step 3: Use the battery – Most of the times we work with a power source connected with the notebook. From now on at least once in a month use your notebook only with your battery. This will help the battery to drain out completely so that it can further be recharged. Periodic drain and recharge helps in extending the life of your notebooks battery.

Step 4: System Options – If you use your notebook without power source then make sure that you have done appropriate power settings in your notebook to preserve the battery life. You can select many options like hibernating, turning the screen off, standby mode, or sleep mode to save the precious charge in your notebook’s battery.

Step 5: Clean the connectors – You should clean the connectors of your battery once in a while so that there is not impedance at that level and your notebook gets appropriate power. This helps in proper usage of batteries and thus results in extended life.

Step 6: Keep it cool – Batteries work the best when used in a cool and dry atmosphere. Avoid using your notebook under direct sun or in direct heat. Heat seriously diminishes the batteries capability of accumulating the charge and thus reduces its life.

If you have to leave your notebook off for quite some time then make sure that the battery is not fully charged. As per manufacturers, the idle state to keep a battery is when it is 40% charged. Do not drain it completely, and neither keeps it fully charged if you have to keep your notebook off for long. These tips are not only for notebook batteries but can also be applied to cell phone batteries as well.

Steps to take if a laptop gets wet

No matter how much cautious we are, or how much care we take, accidents are bound to happen. You might keep your desk very clean and free of any kinds of liquids or water but it may happen that you accidentally end up spilling something on your laptop. As we know that laptops are electronic devices which have extensive mesh of wiring on PCBs inside it. There are many electronic devices inside the laptop and any or all of them can get damaged by the liquid which got spilled. Liquid can damage the laptop or that particular device permanently. The best remedy is to not eat or drink while you are working on your laptop, but I know how difficult it is to stop yourself drinking coffee, cola, or water while you work, so given below are some actions which you can take if something spills on your laptop to avoid further damage to its electronic components.

Step 1: Shut it off – Turn off the laptop as quickly as possible and also take out the battery. Also disconnect the speaker, mouse, and all other cables connected to your laptop.

Step 2: Remove the Liquid – Put your laptop upside down to remove as much liquid as possible. You can shake it a little but not much. Keep on wiping the liquid so that it does not go inside again. Turn it well so that the liquid comes out quickly.

Step 3: Dry it – If you have something important to be done then this is the time to arrange for some other computer or laptop, because your laptop would need a decent amount of time to dry itself. Leave your wet laptop in an airy, dry place so that the liquid evaporates. Please do not turn on the laptop during this time and also do not use hair dryer to dry the laptop.

Step 4: Open the Laptop – Once you have given good amount of time to your laptop for drying itself, you can open it from behind to check the status. Use a soft cloth to wipe any kind of residue. You can use a small fan for drying it further, and please do not open your laptop if it is within warranty.

Step 5: Reassemble it – Now it is a good time to tighten all the screws back, cross your fingers, and turn it on. Your laptop should start and work as before otherwise you need to get it repaired.

Troubleshooting Overheating Issues In Laptops

If your laptop suddenly overheats and shuts down, there is a problem that needs to be fixed. There are very many reasons why the overheating problem begins. The keyboard area as well as the laptop bottom area heat up when the laptop is being used. The CPU fans keep operating throughout and suddenly start becoming louder and noisier than before. The laptop shuts down suddenly without a warning. Sometimes the laptop shuts down after a few hours but sometimes it shuts down in 5-10 minutes itself. While the laptop works fine when idle, it starts shutting down as soon as high memory based applications are used like the DVD player, any video editor, image editor and so on.

First, is the CPU heat sink, check to see that it is not clogged with dust and lint, and then it is a good idea to blow air into it. Open the case to access the heat sink and laptop fan. In some of the laptops, you can access the heat sink by opening the latch at the bottom of the case. Either ways, you need to open the laptop completely. Disconnect the fan cables from the board completely. Remove the fan and if the fan is making grinding sounds, it needs to be removed for a complete overhaul. Clean the fan and heat sink with compressed air, Remove old thermal grease and apply new fresh thermal grease. Now run the fan and see the noise will have reduced or eliminated completely. However, you need to be extremely careful if you a taking the laptop apart. Another method to avoid opening up the laptop is to use a heavy duty suction machine and suck out the dust from within the system. This enables you to get the laptop working, while you do not open the machine too, but really not recommended, as heavy suction can leave remnants of lint and dirt stuck to un-accessible areas, inside the housing.

Apparently, one finds that the heating up of the laptop bottom is the only kind of problem that occurs widely. Using the laptop in higher ambient temperatures can cause overheating. Using heavy memory guzzling applications can also cause overheating. Placing the laptop on carpets or cushions can also cause overheating blocking the cooling systems from working. A chocked up cooling system can also cause overheating. It is advised to use the laptop on a laptop tray. Use of air-conditioning can also avoid overheating. Do not use broken or damaged batteries. All these measures should ensure that your laptop is well looked after and overheating is controlled. These days we also see products like laptop cooling pads available, which can more than push the performance to much higher levels.
