Review of Toshiba’s CEVO-Engine

Toshiba is happy about its upcoming CEVO-Engine, which is going to launch in the beginning of next year in a price range of “sub-€5,000”. So, CEVO-Engine in a nutshell is a bunch of those multicore processors stacked on top of each other and that allows more picture processing. Microsoft’s Wedge Lens Technology

All these days people used to wear special glasses to watch 3D Dimensional content-be it the movies or cartoon or what not. Here’s some good news. The Microsoft Applied Sciences team has done it again. Recently,the group has successfully developed a new lens which can be used to watch 3D content without special glasses.

Description of the new technology:

The alternative used by the team is a a lens that is very thin at the bottom (6mm approx.) when compared to the upper portion (11mm approx.). This lens is used to steer light to the spectator’s eyes through a Light Emitting Diode(LED) which is placed along it’s bottom edge. The 3D display uses a camera to track the content viewers so that it knows where exactly to steer the light . This idea is not a new one. Earlier,the CPU power required was very large and not affordable but now this technology requires only less CPU power and it is easy to pull it off on a large scale.

Working of this technology:

Traditional lenses that are found in the projectors are placed between a point of light and it’s focal point which has been making viewer tracking 3D systems unaffordable and bulky. The design of Microsoft’s Wedge lens has by-passed this problem as the light travels only within the lens and not in the air medium. As a result of this, the surface of the wedge becomes the focal point and this sharply minimizes the distance between the projector and the screen. The LED perfectly controls the position and the angle of the light as it enters the bottom edge of the lens and also the direction in which the light comes out. In the meanwhile, the viewer tracking cameras collect all the light travelling the other way through the lens. The system’s viewing angle is about 20 degrees but Microsoft hopes for producing even better results-tweaking the lens to a 40 degree angle which is still being reviewed.

Advantages of this technology:

Various other companies have demonstrated off 3D displays which don’t require glasses but those equipments often make use of lenticular lenses which are directly integrated into the display and project different images in two fixed directions. As a result the viewer need to be in a particular designated zone to experience the 3D effect. However, Microsoft’s prototype of the display can successfully deliver the 3D effect to two viewers at the same instant by presenting different images to their left and right eyes such that one video is seen in each eye regardless of the position of the viewer. This system can also show ordinary 2 dimensional (2D) videos for upto four people simultaneously such that each person sees one video.

Since the lens is very thin, it can easily be incorporated into a standard Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) by replacing the traditionally used backlight, that shines through through the liquid crystals and projects the images to the viewers.

Ongoing research:

The picture quality is limited by the screen’s refresh rate and so Microsoft is urging display manufacturers to make faster LCDs. The company is also looking into how the lens can be used as a backlight of laptops that will be capable of projecting images to either one person or to multiple people.

Microsoft has done it once again by producing a very advanced and useful technology for the movie and the gaming industries. R&D in this technology may bring 3D games that can be played on a PC or a video game.

How to Get Ethernet to Work with Windows XP

Proper Connections, driver software and compatible devices are some of the most important things that are required for setting up an Ethernet with Windows XP. Availability of Ethernet along with Windows XP is very much common nowadays. But there are lots of people who do not have any idea about the trouble-shooting of Ethernet connection. They face lots of confusion and anxiety when some problem occurs with the Ethernet connection or its compatibility with the Windows XP. Following are some of the instructions that you must follow for the purpose of trouble-shooting of Ethernet problems.

You must check whether the Ethernet device is working properly or not. Router and modem are the devices that are normally used for the Ethernet connection. LED (light emitting diode) of Modem indicates whether the device or port is working properly or not. Blinking light of connector indicates that LAN card or Ethernet card is attached with the motherboard. Similarly green lights of the modem indicate that Modem is getting enough energy for working and there is no problem with it. Same is in the case of other Ethernet devices like Router.

After checking the working of Modem or Router, you must check whether the cables for Ethernet are working properly or not. Problem occurs when these cables get warm. First of all, you must ensure that cables are placed in the ports in a desired manner. After this, you must check the connectors’ end of the cable. RJ45 connector is normally used for establishing the Ethernet connection. You must ensure that whether this connector is working properly or not. It can be checked by observing the Light indication of modem. If light of Modem is red or blinking rapidly then you must replace the old cable with the new Ethernet cable.

After checking the devices and cables, you must go for checking the performance of Network Card. It is basically a hardware that is placed into the slots of PCI (Personal Computer Interface). The port of this PCI can be seen at the rear end of the CPU’s casing. If light blinks at this port then it means that everything is Ok but if there is no light visible at this port then it means that something is wrong with the Software ort Hardware. In this case, you must remove the cover of casing and check that whether Network card has placed properly in the slots of PCI or not. If it is placed properly then place it in a proper manner.

Another issue that you must keep in mind is that whether the Network Card that you have placed in the PCI slots is compatible with Motherboard of your system or not. It is the reality that particular Network Card works properly only with particular Motherboard. You can check that whether the Network Card that you have placed in the PCI slots is compatible with Motherboard of your system or not with the help of guiding manual of your system.

The last thing that you must do in case of some problem is to update the drivers of Network card.

Sharp Announces Eight New LCDs

Sharp has announced that it will be introducing eight new LCD models. The Japan based organization will be adding eight new models in the DX Series of its LED AQUOS TVs. These eight models will feature one model of 52 inch, one model of 46 inch, three models of 40 inch and three models of 32 inch and all the models will have an in-built Blue-ray disc recorders, along with next generation UVA photo alignment technology.

Moreover, the LCD panels and the LED backlight system enable precise control and delivery of image quality, along with a cinema contrast of 5,000,000:1. All the eight models offer high energy efficiency which results in 30% less consumption of power than the previous models.

Along with the integrated all-in-one design, Sharp has also provided Blue-ray recording and playback of DVDs and Blue-ray discs. These models come with highly sophisticated functions like extended recording time of 36 hours in full HD, on a single Blue-ray disc.

The LC-52DX3, LC-46DX3 and LC-40DX3 models of the DX Series are Full HD and a have dot count of 1,920 x 1,080 while on the other hand LC-32DX3 is a HD TV that has dot count of 1,366 x 768. Both the models, LC-52DX3 and LC-46DX3 will be available only in black color but LC-40DX3 and LC-32DX3 will be available in black, white and red colors. Sharp has also confirmed that LC-52DX3, LC-46DX3 and LC-40DX3 will be available from 1oth June 2010 onwards. However, LC-32DX3 will be available from 20th May 2010.
