HTC® and Verizon top in speedy Android™ upgrades

One of the major drawbacks of buying a mobile using Android as a platform is the delay in updates reaching the user. Several major phone companies and carriers lag behind in pushing the updates that Google releases. Among the cell phone companies HTC is the quickest in releasing the updates. HTC had released the Froyo update to 50% of the compatible phones in 2010, a recent survey said. On the other hand Motorola updated 15.4% of the devices, Samsung 11.4 % and LG, Sony and Dell did not push any updates. There have been rumors from T-Mobile, which claims that Samsung is holding out updates as a marketing gimmick for its forthcoming release of Vibrant 4G. Also Motorola and HTC were the fastest to update their phones within almost 56 days.

Among the carriers Verizon has updated a third of compatible device with Froyo and was also the fastest to update the handsets (within 58 days), Sprint updated 28.6 % of devices while T-Mobile only 1/8th of its consumers. AT&T lagged behind with it not pushing Froyo updates to its handsets in 2010. Sprint and T-Mobile crossed three months before managing to update their devices.

The problem with the Android update distribution system is the many layers and steps that it has to get through for an update launched by Google to reach the end user. Google forwards the source code which each phone company edits and customizes for its own UI and then the carrier makes its own changes before finally forwarding it to the user. Each phone company has to evaluate the update and make sure it is running properly and in tune with the smart phone also whether the apps are working with the new OS update, hence the delay.

An HTC PR stated that it takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. They should make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they are all running properly on the OS now that it is a new version. Google plans to address these problems with the next Android update Gingerbread and hopes to remove such issues and make the updating much easier hence a reduction in time frame for the user.

The LG has revealed the 4G version of the G-Slate Tablet PC in the Consumer Electronics Show 2011, held in Las Vegas this year. This latest gadget from the house of LG had been designed for T-Mobile in the Unites States.

LG has detracted from selling its 4G models outside the US due to the fact that 4G is not available anywhere in the world, except in the US. LG has reported that its 4G model can deliver download speeds of up to 21 Mbps. By releasing different versions of its tablet PC, LG has taken a leaf out of Apple’s campaign. Apple’s iPad is available in different versions; while one has 3G, the other version is Wi-Fi enabled. This way, there are various versions of Apple’s single product, which is why it has become popular. LG aims to mimic the success of Apple with its G-Slate Tablet PC, but only time can tell how its new plans go. For the time being, LG has not yet revealed specific release dates for its tablet PC. It is slated to release further details in the Mobile World Congress that is going to take place between 14th and 17th February in Barcelona, Spain.

LG Planning 3D Technology without Glasses

LG is planning to unveil a Smartphone with 3D viewing and recording capability. And an added benefit of viewing 3D videos without the bulky glasses. Named as Optimus 3D it is planned to unveil at Mobile World Congress at Barcelona this year. The phone touted to be the most advanced and running on innovation will feature a dual-lens camera for 3D recording and a LCD screen for displaying the visual content. It comes with a 4.3 inch LCD with 800×480 resolutions. Parallax barriers are used as a series of light-blocking slits attached to the front of the LCD panel according to LG to help differentiate between the left and right image without requiring special 3D viewing glasses which gives us the perception of depth. It comes with HDMI and DLNA connectivity options to connect with a visual display or another media device for a rich media experience. It is rumored to run on NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor to power its 1080p HD video playback and recording.with a 8 megapixel camera with flash a front camera for video calling. The high resolution screen display is guaranteed to ensure an ultimate gaming and video experience. 3D enabled visual experience in a handheld device is not a new experience, Nintendo 3DS already has made an entry in this market. It also boasts of glasses free 3D experience. However the 3D effect can only be seen if you are staring at the screen from the front end, tilting negates the 3d effect. However the 3D effect is so mind-blowing that you would forgive Nintendo for this. It is not “characters coming out of the screen” 3D but depth 3D, and all this without the cumbersome 3D glasses.

LG’s press release states that the LG Optimus 3D addresses the lack of 3D content issue – one of the biggest challenges facing the 3D market – with a complete platform for a one-of-a-kind experience on a mobile device. They continued, stating that LG’s most advanced Smartphone to date would be featuring a dual-lens camera for 3D recording, a glasses-free LCD panel for 3D viewing and diverse connectivity options such as HDMI and DLNA for 3D content sharing anytime, anywhere.

The market trends are currently moving towards 3D with gaming Smartphones and televisions all moving towards this future. Sooner or later more and more companies will embrace 3D. LG has made the first steps towards this in cell phones. This was a future only imagined and now LG has brought it to our hands. Shape and form has been given to one of our fantasies. LG will have to be careful though that only 3D will not make its phone sell, it should have complimenting power packed features like a high processing power and a good battery life to make it against the huge array of Smartphones lined up for a release. This 14th of February in Barcelona at the Mobile World congress be prepared to be bedazzled.
