How to reset the password on LinkSys Router

Linksys routers are a brand of routers manufactured by Cisco Systems, which deal with production and marketing of home and small office networking products. Apart from selling broadband and wireless routers, the Linksys brand also deals with consumer and small business grade Ethernet switching, wireless internet video cameras, network storage systems etc.

One of the ways to protect your network is by setting up a password for your router. In order to secure your Linksys router, first of all you need to sign into the administrator account. In case you forgot the password or if you are not aware of it, you can follow the instructions step by step, as explained below.

How to reset the password on Linksys router

Step 1: If you have forgotten the password for the router, the first thing to do is to reset the router to the default factory settings. In order to do this, you need to press and hold the reset button on the router for about 30 seconds.

Step 2: Once the router is hard reset, you would need to reconfigure it again. Before you go ahead and access the configuration page, you would be required to connect a PC to one of its Ethernet ports. It must be ensured that you have a cabled connection to connect to the router for accessing the administration settings.

Step 3: When you are through with the physical setup, you need to switch on the computer and wait till the home screen is displayed. Then double click on the Internet Explorer web browser or any other you installed on your PC. When the address window opens, click on its address bar to type in the address ‘192.168.1.1’, which is the default router address for the Linksys router.

Step 4: After entering the address and hitting Enter, you will be taken to a popup box that will ask you for your Login information. You are required to enter a Username and a Password which should be ‘admin’ for both the fields, in the case of a Linksys router. However, there are some Linksys routers, especially the old ones, where default username should be blank and the default password is ‘admin’.

Step 5: After you are through with the Login window by entering the User ID and Password information, you will be able to reconfigure the Linksys router. Here you need to go to the management tab and change the administrator password to something else. Make sure it is difficult enough for someone else who wants to access your router without your consent.

Step 6: Once you change the administrator password, you would also need to enable WEP or WAP security to keep your nosy neighbors away from tapping into your wireless network.

It is suggested that you do not avoid the above steps because protecting your network should be the first priority before logging in to connect to the Internet. Other steps that can be followed for ensuring added protection are MAC Address filtering, disabling SSID broadcast and enabling firewalls.

Reconfiguration and password resetting of the LinkSys router

LinkSys is a very well known brand of small office and home networking products. Products sold under the brand include wireless, broadband and DSL routers, consumer and small business grade Ethernet switching, AV products, network storage systems, wireless internet video camera and other products. LinkSys routers are convenient and simple to set up, even by inexperienced users. Talking about the default username and password during setup, they are usually set to ‘admin’. However, on old LinkSys routers, the default password is set to ‘admin’ and the username is kept blank. However, to properly secure the LinkSys Router, there are few steps that need to be followed. First of all, it is required to sign in to the administrator’s account. However if one forgets the password or doesn’t know it, all is needed is to follow few instructions, which are shown as below.

The routers are designed in such a way that can always be reset in case of any difficulty. The steps to be followed are:

Step 1: If you forget the password of the LinkSys router, the simplest thing that can be done is reset the factory default settings of the router. To bring you to the default factory configuration settings, the reset button on the unit must be pressed for about 30 seconds.

Step 2: The next step involves reconfiguring the router again. For that, you need to Login.

Reconfiguration involves connecting a PC to one of the Ethernet ports of the router. Then open its web browser and click on its address window. Type ‘192.168.1.1’ in the address bar. After pressing Enter, you’ll be taken to a window, asking to enter a Username and Password.  The default username should be blank but password should be ‘admin’, in case of older LinkSys routers as mentioned in the beginning of the article. But both the default username and password should be set to ‘admin’ in case of newer LinkSys routers.

Once past the Login screen, you will be able to reconfigure the settings of the router. You can go to the ‘management’ tab and then change the password to something of your choice. This needs to be always done to keep it safe and secure against outsiders trying to gain access to the router.

Step 3: Once the administrator password is changed, the WEP or WAP security needs to be enabled. This is again done to enable maximum security because there may be neighbors within range who may try to tap into the wireless network.

Along with following the above steps, one needs to make sure that he has a cable connection for connecting to the router.

In case of any sort of confusion, one can also run the router setup CD which might have been provided when it was bought and installed. Following the instructions on the CD may make it convenient for the user and guide him step by step to reconfigure the router or change its password.

It is not uncommon for people to forget or be unaware of their router passwords. Following few simple and specific steps is all that is needed.

How to Recover a Lost Network Key for a Linksys Router

We are most of the time found complaining either we have forgotten the ‘Password’ of our account or the ‘Network Key’ of our Linksys routers. The explanations given are either we forgot to retain latter in our minds or forgot to even have it written and to a more worst situation forgot to save it. Do we have a way out with it if it’s done so?  No worries, we do have simple ways to tackle this situation.

To begin with, you need to have with you a printer and a main station computer. Go this way, firstly, get your computer booted where you had first installed your router. Click on the “Control Panel” tab found in your start menu and find the “Linksys Router control icon”. Switch over to your web browser and type this IP address: (http://192.168.1.1) exactly the same in the web address bar of your web browser. This IP address will not give an access to Internet, but will take you to host of the control screen. This IP address is actually your router’s LAN address. When you have that screen right in front of you click on your most desired tab “Security” found at the top of the screen. On your mere click, you will have your code unveiled simply without doing anything and so that you can once again acess the service. Then you will be redirected to a form containing the WEP’s (Wireless Encryption Protocol) details. You can either write down the details or go for pressing ( CTRL+P)  from your keyboard on your screen in order to get your details printed. The printer will print the page out completely and thus will help you in future. Then open the setup of your wireless network connection, type in there the details that are inscribed on the paper you printed. This will not only give an access to LAN (Local Area Network ), but also help you successfully retain your network key.

Secondly, you can find you way out this way, open your web browser like Internet explorer, Mozilla firefox, Safari, Google chrome or Opera. But, bare in mind that browser must be an original one, like the one you had when you installed router. Type in the “web address” the IP address  (http://192.168.1.1). This will take you to form of your router. Click on the “Wireless” tab present in the form and followed by a click on the “Wireless Security”. This will get you the WEP keys enlisted. You can choose to use the first one. Keep in mind to retain the copy of your IP address and get it adorned somewhere so that it can be easily accessible incase you forget it. Then get on to the details of the router’s settings and keep those WEP details with that you have just obtained. Get the details printed over there and then you will be able to access to the Internet. Remember to keep track of your network keys, this will prevent you from buying a new router again if you can’t enter the setting details of your older one.

Recovery of Network Key of Linksys’s router can be easily done by following the above mentioned way. But, remember to retain those details with you, so that next time you don’t have to take that much pain recovering it or buying yourself a new router.

How to setup a wireless network on Linksys Router?

For setting up the Wireless network first of all you would need to connect the router with any computer using a LAN cable. This is done so that you can access the router settings page for setting up the wireless network. If you have a new router then just plug the WAN cable in the WAN port of the router and then connect the LAN port of the router to your computer. This will enable the router in the switch mode and you would be online. Next run the IPCONFIG command in the command prompt and note down the Default Gateway of your computer. Next open any browser and type http://<default gateway address> (Example:- http:\\192.168.1.1). this will take you to the routers settings screen and will ask for login. Login can be done by using “admin” as the username and blank as the password. Once logged in you will land on the settings page and will get number of options over there.

Click on the WLAN option and then give a name to your wireless network. It is called SSID and this name would let you identify your wireless network if there is more than one network in the vicinity. That would be all to start with an unsecure wireless network. Use another computer which has a wireless card on it and scan for available networks. It will list your newly added network and on double clicking it will get connected to it. But this way anybody who will come in the range of your router will be able to connect to it and access the resources without you even knowing about it. Given below are the steps to make the wireless network secure so that nobody else can connect to it without knowing the passkey.

In the router’s setting page under the WLAN option you will find option for Wireless security. There you need to first set the encryption and then set a passkey for your Wireless network. This passkey is also called as WEP key which stands for Wireless Equivalent Privacy. So if you enable WEP key security on your network then your wireless network would become as secure as any wired network. No body would be able to connect to your computer without knowing the passkey or the so called WEP key. To connect computer to your secure network you need to scan the Wireless network and once found double click on it to attempt connecting to it. Windows will then prompt you to enter the WEP key. Enter the WEP key and save it so that your computer does not prompt you to enter the key again while connecting to this secure network of yours. The same steps of connecting and entering the passkey needs to be done on all the computers once so that they can join the Secured Wireless network just created by you.
