TIME® magazine nominates Steve Jobs for ‘Person of the Year’ title

Steve Jobs has a way of being in the company of the chosen. Even after his death last month, this man did it again. TIME has nominated Steve Jobs for its coveted ‘Person of the Year’ award. If he ends up winning then in the history of last 84 years Steve jobs will be the first man to win it posthumously. He was nominated by Brian Williams, the famous anchor of the NBC Nightly News.

According to Williams, Jobs almost changed the way we look into things, he gave us the spirit that you could look at a plastic or a piece of wood and move your finger, that something new was possible. Steve jobs, according to Williams represented the spirit of change, which is why he remains his nominee.

In the year 1927, the main idea behind these awards, was to cover up the embarrassment of not having Charles Lindbergh on its cover after his historic Trans-Atlantic flight. It was decided that there would be a cover story on Charles Lindbergh as well.

Over the years, it has been awarded as an honor and pride to people who made their presence felt in different fields. And the title was changed from Man of the Year to Person of the Year. However, it may raise a few eyebrows when we say that in 1938, Adolf Hitler was awarded with this award. When it was awarded to Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979, there was a huge public outcry. Since then TIME magazine have kept away from awarding disputed figures.

In 1999, TIME magazine named Albert Einstein as the Person of the Century. Mahatma Gandhi and Franklin D Roosevelt were declared runners up.

The year 2010 belonged to Mark Zuckerberg when he was awarded with the title. This year as his friend Steve Jobs is nominated, it’s yet to be seen if he wins it finally or not. But we all know, Jobs would be one happy man up there in the heavenly abode watching his name being announced as the winner.

Diaspora™ Co-Founder Ilya Zhitomirskiy is Dead

Ilya Zhitomirskiy, the 22-year-old young entrepreneur, is dead . He was one of the co-founders of Diaspora, an open source social networking platform based in New York.

According to Police reports, there was a phone call about a possible suicide at 700 block of Treat Avenue in San Francisco around 8:10 pm on Saturday. The case is being referred to the medical examiner office, and it might take several weeks before the reports come out.

Zhitomirskiy, a drop out of New York University founded Diaspora with three others in a computer lab of New York University.

It was pitched as an anti-Facebook platform where according to Zhitomirskiy himself, “No longer will you be at the whims of those large corporate networks, who want to tell you that sharing and privacy are mutually exclusive.”

From the beginning itself, Zhitomirskiy was working on strategies to bring in facebook users to use Diaspora. To launch Diaspora, in November 2010, the four founders raised more than US$ 200,000 for the project through an online fundraising system named Kickstarter. Last month, it was posted on their blog that more funds are required.

Though it is supposed to be anti-Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg is a supporter of Diaspora and has contributed funds to it. Zuckerberg told Wired.com that, “I think it is cool people are trying to do it. I see a little of myself in them.”

According to Zhitomirskiy, he did not set to make money by creating this new venture, for him it was more important being part of creating stuff for the universe.

“Ilya was a great guy. He was a visionary, he was a co-founder of a company that hopes to bring a better social networking experience,” said Peter Schurman, a Diaspora spokesman. “We are all very sad that he is gone. It is a huge loss for all of us, including his family.”

Facebook’s 5 Year plan to overtake Google

Facebook is the biggest social networking site today and it has record number of users worldwide. If we talk about revenues and market share then Facebook is growing like never before. Established in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook has become more reputed brand now and every organization wants to collaborate with facebook. One can not ignore the user base and daily visitors on Facebook and it is an ideal place for advertising.

One also can not ignore the power of Google; the biggest search engine giant. Google is number one in terms of regular searches done by internet users. But the fact is if every user of Facebook performs as many searches as on Google instant, YouTube then you can imagine that Facebook can grow as big as Google or may be it will become bigger than Google is today. One can easily imagine the Facebook power as back in 2007, Microsoft paid quarter a million dollar to run banner ads on Facebook. At that time many of us thought that Microsoft decision is not business oriented but now the situation is changed completely and Facebook has already more visitors than Google today. Internet users are spending more time on Facebook than Google.

Now let’s talk about revenues of Google and Facebook. In 2010, Google is expecting $28 billion but come to the Facebook and you have to believe the growth of Facebook. It can move from $2 billion to $30 billion in five years, how exciting figures!!!! There is one thing that is common to both Google and facebook: people, they are solely responsible for entire revenue. Facebook is totally social and like their applications, Facebook engage social networking users with social intent. Looking at the figures, we can easily say that facebook will be bigger than Google in five years barring any disaster or accidents.

Facebook Advertising is not a direct competitor of Google AdSense or Adwords. While advertizing on internet, organization get confused with so many places to reach consumers but Facbook fixes theire problem. For some people over the globe, facbook is web for them. They search, browse, listen to music, videos, everything on Facebook. Facebook revenues come from mainly cross- promotions; facebook is collaborating with Microsoft, Zynga, and Amazon or may be Google. Facebook also has option to block any one of them but the factor is to join not block. It is not working like web ecosystem but running a cycle og cross promotion and doing advertizing and commerce both at single time.

Facebook also gives companies to develop more powerful ads and spread to users. Facebook gives so many options that can help in advertizing and advertizing is very simple and user can view at their home page. Over 100 ex- Google employees are working with Facebook and they will develop more powerful direct user connectivity in next five years. If the development will successful then they do not need to cover the $30 million to cross Google. They will get one part of the revenue from advertizing only.

“The Social Network” Soars to $23 million in weekend Box office

The idea of social networking has become a renowned phenomenon around the world that not making a movie or at least a documentary about the rise of “Social Networkism”, will not do justice to its evolution. After all, the man behind the mask of Facebook should be credited for its conception and there is a large public at large that is curious as to how their Facebook pages have evolved. Does this mean that Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook has become an overnight celebrity? Actually yes, that is what the movie “The social Network” seeks to entail.

On its weekend release the movie made total revenue of $23 million but analysts were predicting it to hit a jackpot of $25 to $30 million. According to USA Today Ticket sales are likely to improve as many moviegoers wait for the release of the reviews. In light of the positive reviews that “The Social Network” has jacked up; total revues may actually across the $60 million revenue by the end of this month.

The movie has been made been by Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher, that depicts the evolution of Facebook in the backdrop of the life of Mark Zuckerberg. After its release in the weekend there has been a flood of criticism as to depicting the life of Zuckerberg. Many even point to the accuracy of facts of the story of social networking itself in the movie. The best person to judge about the movie would be Mark Zuckerberg himself, till then let’s wait for his take on this.

Facebook and Twitter, the dilemma continues

It was a bizarre set of events that made two fierce competitors work in tandem to solve a problem. Although was it a real problem or it was set up remain to be seen. But a Facebook application on Twitter that helps the users find friends who are on both the networks was found to be disabled. Later on the day an email statement was released by the Facebook that said they have rectified the problem and were working with Twitter Inc to solve it as soon as possible.

Competition

It is an open secret that with the social networking market hot as ever there is fierce competition between the flagship companies like Facebook and Twitter. Now many may not know that Twitter has a very handy application that lets the Twitter users to know about their friends, if they are on both the network (i.e. on Facebook and Twitter) or not. And if they are then they can have the option of posting updates on both the sites simultaneously.

Recently it was found that this application was disabled from the Facebook side, which fueled the rumors that Facebook has purposely done that. However an emailed statement from Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg said that they are facing some crunch on this update and are not able to solve it. It also stated that they wish to work along with Twitter to find a solution of the problem.

Facebook Dominance

Also in the statement he mentioned that there are four countries that yet to grip the Facebook mania to its core. The countries are namely Russia, China, Japan and Korea. And he has sincere hopes to reaching 1 billion users by the end of year. The need for better advertisement is of paramount importance as that is the only way that can make Facebook the first global networking site of the world.

Looking at the bigger picture Twitter has about 100 million users that are regular on Facebook as well. While the total count of Facebook members is about 500 million. Hence if both these services combine then Twitter will get more benefits. This has been thought to be a plausible reason for the disabling of the application.

Twitter boasts itself as a micro blogging site and there are 160 character updates while there is a similar application on Facebook hence the users are in a fix as to which one to use.

There is no way we can predict the future and it will only tell if the Facebook and Twitter integration is equally beneficial for both the companies or not. However one thing is certain and that is this phenomenon of social networking is sure to stay either individually or together.

Facebook Peaks $800 Million Revenue: Highest in Social Networking

Everyday, as we wake up, we turn to our computers and stay in front of them for long hours. The internet has truly provided us with such a wide variety of entertainment. Aside from Yahoo, Google and YouTube, the most visited websites today are social networking sites. And the people’s favorite would definitely be Facebook.

Facebook redefined what social networking is. Compared to other older social networking, Facebook is truly more addictive and fun. A person can do a lot of things through Facebook such as play games, chat with friends and post silly stuffs on the Facebook wall. It has also been a place where people display their ads and the like. Who in the world does not have a Facebook account? Even our grandparents have a Facebook page.

Facebook has truly made history.

  • Their financial performance is getting better and better.
  • It is in fact stronger than what is previously believed.
  • As the number of Facebook users exploded, the revenue hits as big as $800 million in the year 2009.

Who would have thought that this huge social networking has been created by a not-so-typical college student, Mark Zuckerberg, and his friends? Yes, Facebook started in a dorm room in the year 2004. And after 6 years, voila! Millions have joined and millions of dollars have been made.

The $800 million profits have truly proven that Facebook is number one. As of now, it is the world’s largest social network. Facebook users have reached almost about half a billion. This is really an unbelievable phenomenon. This kind of performance can attract a wide array of investors.

The financial performance of Facebook in 2009 is significantly higher than some of the figures that the networking site suggested earlier on. On July 2009, Marc Andreessen, a Facebook board member, told Reuters that they will surely be able to outshine $500 million for yearly revenue for 2009. On the middle of 2009, Facebook revealed that they have a free cash flow positive. This typically means that they have enough money to cover the cost of the whole operation and the capital needs.

Facebook is truly downplaying their performance. But it is always good to go low that go disappointing the public. However, if Facebook will unleash the real annual revenue, investors will surely be attracted to invest on the social networking site. They will be drooling over the real “heavenly” financial figures of Facebook. Unfortunately, Facebook refused to comment on such issue.

If the estimates on Facebook’s 2010 annual revenue are true, then it is quite news for Facebook. They have been walking on the dark these past few months because of the privacy-related issues. They even made it to the cover of time Magazine. This made CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, apologizing to the company’s errors.

As long as these high figures stay that way, Facebook will be able to solve these privacy problems and earn more millions. It should still be able to surpass all the other social networking sites available today. This area has been evolving a lost faster than expected today. Facebook should make sure that they are still on top shape.
