ARM and IBM® to collaborate of engery efficient Smartphones

ARM is a big name in the tech world and they are a leader in the microprocessor intellectual property. ARM is famous for designing low-cost, low-power RISC processors and other peripherals. ARM is also the number one architecture used 32-bit ISA. According to a report in 2007, 89% of the billion phones sold every year are using at least one ARM technology in their phone. This is due to their cost-efficient small microprocessors and microcontrollers.

IBM is also the famous x86 makers that dominates microprocessor market today.ARM processors are widely used in mobile phones, music player, digital devices, gaming consoles, calculators and also in computer hardware like hard disk drives. IBM is a big name incomputer hardware and software, and it also offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas like mainframe computers to nanotechnology. There is also one problem with Smartphones that they are not as fast as the laptops. So, these small processors will also increase the computing speed of Smartphones. As most of the consumers now prefer working on Smartphone rather than their laptops or desktop, it will also make them more capable of doing more work on Smartphones.

Recently ARM announced that they will continue their union with IBM, the computing giant and they are planning to work on low-power consuming processors for Smartphones. They are collaborating to create smaller, faster chip designs which won’t eat through as much power. They are also planning to cooperate with each other to manufacture chips and design processes from the earliest stages in order to achieve this dream.

The partnership between ARM and IBM will result in a 14nm manufacturing process size. If we compare with the current 40nm and 32nm that is also developed with the collaboration of IBM, it is minuscule. They have proven themselves with quality processors and now Smartphone manufacturer are excited about the ability to manufacture tiny, cheap, powerful chips with low energy consumption.

General Manager at IBM Microelectronics, Michael cardigan said, “We plan to continue working closely with ARM and our foundry customers to speed the momentum of ARM technology by delivering highly advanced, low-power semiconductor technology for a variety of new communications and computing devices.”

With the growing Smartphone users and the growing popularity, it is very important time to innovate new ideas like ARM and IBM is doing. There will be power-efficient and low-cost Smartphone available if they will be able to successfully develop this project. There is very high demand for Smartphones and tablet computers, the main advantage of using these devices are the tiny size and movable features. They run on batteries and it is always not possible to get it charged everywhere, so, this low-power processor will benefit consumers. Everyone is hoping some more innovations in Smrtphones not just on its outer looks but also in its processor speed and low-power technology.

Intel and Nvidia Face tough Competition from AMD’s Fusion Processor

With the ATI merger, AMD was planning to create a processor that combines the central processing unit with the graphics processing unit. The result is the AMD Fusion, a processor which integrates the CPU and GPU that paves the way for computers to do away with graphics cards and graphics processing units.

New AMD Processor

Code named Fusion, AMD set off in 2006 to develop this microprocessor that is able to perform the functions of a central processing unit as well as of a graphics processing unit.  They are successfully going ahead with the project and now say that the processer will be out in the latter part of 2011. It is going to save the computer manufacturers the expense of having to create a separate chip for graphics processing as fusion will be able to do the job of both, the central processing unit and the graphic processing unit.

The Present Situation

At present most computers, especially notebooks use Intel’s core series processors. When computer users try to run graphic intensive programs or games, they face problems, and to overcome them they need solutions such as:

  • They will be compelled to buy an integrated graphic processor from Intel.
  • An alternative is to buy a discrete graphics processors such as Nvidia. In case you buy an integrated graphic processor, your computer is going to slow down making it difficult for you to run the programs.
  • You can buy a discrete graphics processor but it will incur you an additional cost.

Competition from AMD

At present Intel is the market leader for central processing units. Their CPUs are preferred by many people over the AMD CPUs.  One of the Weaknesses of Intel is that they don’t offer a good graphic processing unit. On the other hand, Nvidia is the most popular graphics processor but they do not have a central processing unit of their own. This creates a void that needs to be filled with a chip that is capable of handling the jobs of both the central processing unit and the graphic processing unit.

This is where AMD is going to step in with a chip that could do both jobs efficiently. On top of all the other advantages is the ability to do both jobs with just one processor. Once this technology is available half way through next year, laptop manufacturers are in for an easy cost saving solution. In addition to the cost saving they will be able to prevent their machines getting slower due to having a separate processor for graphics.

AMD’s Radeon graphic cards are already making their presence felt as good graphics cards, posing some sort of competition to Nvidia as they are able to provide good graphics in computers. This is a sign for the computer user to guess what is on the cards when AMD’s Fusion processor arrives in the market in mid 2011. It has now become almost a need, with every laptop user inclined to play games on their laptops.

Intel launches New Atom based Processor for Smartphone

As one of the largest microprocessor companies of the world Intel has recently announced that production new atom based processor. Intel, The first ever microchip manufacturer is looking for a sophisticated use of this processor mostly in the Smartphone market.

As the Smartphone market around the globe is rapid expanding, the phone manufactures demand more sophisticated processors which are fast and flexible. With the vision to make more fast technology, Intel tends to make sure that this cutting edge technology can accelerate the Smartphone run! But Intel still lacks in converting its notebooks and computers to mobile. But Intel watches it as their first step towards this. They wish to make it possible within a very short period. “It’s really our first foot in the door,” said Anand Chandrasekher, general manager of Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group. Intel steps quite behind in mobile processor than current market giants like Qualcomm, Texas Instrument, Marvell and Nvidia. But Intel is taking initiative to remove this discrepancy by new products and deals. They signed a deal with Nokia and LG, while one of Nokia’s products is going to be launched this year which is using Intel mobile processor. The Moblin Linux OS is the latest Intel product for Nokia which can accelerate Intel’s motion towards the success in mobile processor industry. The main criticism against Intel is that they are unable to produce enough power which can support a smartphone. So now Intel looks mainly into the power solution and they claim that they have successfully done this. Intel officials strongly pronounced its capacity to consume 50% of idle power and 5 hour active battery life. Atom Z6 series SoC processor is combined with various 3D graphics mode, video encode and decode and display controller.

Experts think that smart phone will pose the normal cell phones’ space within next few years. In fact they can superimpose laptops and PCs with their extensive advantages in E-mailing, browsing, video and audio conferencing along with multi tasking. They predict processors of these phones will readily concentrate on these issues and make it more reliable and user friendly. Experts hope to see new features on new processors which can place a computer. They hope Moorestown- the tiny package of Intel can carry all these graphical and video and audio facilities which could make PCs obsolete!

The $53 billion company now tends to penetrate into the mobile processor industry. Intel ensures the better productivity and higher quality of its products. They promise higher speeds and better energy resolution including many graphical moods in this new version of processor. Experts think that Google’s success is wholly depends on performance and user’s acceptance. Intel claims that they launched the new processor for more development in the mobile software system. They also emphasize on the diversification of cell phones and hence want to produce much more interactive and user friendly fast and flexible processors.
