Microsoft® OneNote iPhone® App Review

One more app is making headlines in connection with the Apple iPhone, namely the OneNote application from Microsoft. The app has been launched and lets you operate OneNote from anywhere. This interesting cloud application, basically a Web App brings in a revolution in terms of a change in perspective of making available applications on platforms of erstwhile stiff competitors namely Microsoft and Apple.

A basic word processor, OneNote can enter keyboard typed text, pictures or images and create tables. However, it is an unbound document where you can write anywhere virtually. It also does not require the act of saving as it naturally gets saved somewhere. Introduced with Microsoft Office 2003, OneNote has become popular. While it resembles the tabbed ring-binder, it is saved in pages to form a notebook. While word processors are organized to save documents as files, OneNote is used to collect, organize and share material and lets multiple edits where the changes are merged automatically.

While OneNote has been used on laptops and desktop PCs, it is also now enabled to be used on tablets and smartphones. Images, scans, embedded documents and photos can be stored as notes on OneNote. You can also search electronic ink annotations as text. Another interesting feature is that a search can be made for audio recordings with phonetics. Keeping OneNote Mobile free for some time, Microsoft has done the unimaginable, introduced the app for an Apple smartphone in the same name as OneNote before announcing a pricing structure for the same. Please note, it is absolutely essential to have a Windows Live ID for being able to use OneNote or access it over the web.

PDF ‘anomaly’ for Bible to be Fixed by Microsoft

ISV foundation has been impressed by Microsoft’s response to their notice regarding a bug report that they have labeled the Microsoft Office 2003 PDF generation anomaly. Microsoft reaction was very rapid, professional and well-organized with respect to its actions on ISV Foundation behalf and they are very grateful.

It was Microsoft which itself acknowledged the problem with applications like Office 2007 PDF creator that was discovered by a local Bible translator and had released solution for the trouble this month, as told by the Corporate Vice President Jeanne Sheldon.

It was found by a Bible scholar, William Welty that the Word 2007 PDF version has some number of words missing or added. This was related to the ISV Foundation’s Bible and it was also available for download.

At first, Welty considered that the problem lies in Adobe Acrobat Distiller, which is the first and still the dominant creator of portable document format, files popularly known as PDF but then Adobe clarified that it was a problem with the PDF creator in Microsoft office.

In the month of November, the in reading and authoring application in charge of Microsoft Office, Sheldon met with Welty after reading the Register’s story. A few technicians were assigned to rectify the problem which turned out to be the problem arose with major MS Word users not with academic or legal users.

As elaborated by her the problem occurs, she said, when a document involves three conditions:

  1. Copy is set in multiple columns.
  2. It contains footnotes that reset on each page.
  3. The footnotes are variable in width.

If any of the conditions are evolved then the software may either delete or duplicate a word, as confirmed by Sheldon. That issue is more likely to occur in large documents in which the text is only justified, causing text movement that “confuses the pointer” in the software.

As it is a known fact that legal and academic documents contain footnotes, they rarely are set in multiple columns. The newspapers have columns and text is full justification, but they don’t use footnotes. It’s these were the rare situations that software engineers don’t find when they test their products, Sheldon replied that if there is a deep commitment to quality and testing as Microsoft does then you would find all the mainstream errors prior to release.

She also anticipates the correction to be part of the next round of fixes incorporating the past three months of work which is probably going to be released in the week of Dec. 13.Welty also said that he was impressed with Microsoft’s response after Sheldon contacted him. She also sent me a free (software) upgrade, which was nice of her and she’ll be also sending   him the fixes so that they can test it.

ISV used Microsoft Word to create its online version but first will use the traditional commercial printing for the hard copy edition that will be made available in the spring.

How to Uninstall Microsoft Office 2007 & Install Microsoft Office 2003

Just like Windows Vista has a considerably different interface as compared with Windows XP, similarly Office 2007 has completely different interface than Office 2003. Office 2007 does not have the traditional Menu bars and Menu options but has new Ribbons for various tasks and each ribbon has icons for various tasks depending upon their category. Though 2007 is far more feature rich and advanced version of Office but still people might find it difficult to work with and would want to remove it and install the old Office 2003 suit on their computers. Office suit is just like any other application and its installation and un-installation can be done the same way through control panel, but the only difference is that Office is a Microsoft product and it embeds itself very deep into the system when we install it. If we remove it, it is quite possible that some of the core files might remain in the hard drive and then it will be difficult for any previous version of Office to get installed or to work properly. As a precaution the un-installation should always be complete and should not leave any traces behind. Given below are the ways to completely remove Microsoft Office 2007 and install Microsoft Office 2003 on any computer.

The easiest way to Remove Office 2007 is from the Programs and Features window of control panel and if you are on Windows XP then from the Add or Remove Programs in control Panel. Let us start the removal process by clicking on Start and then opening control Panel. In control Panel look for Programs and Fetaures (in Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in XP) and double click to open it. In this window you will find all the applications installed on your computer. Scroll and locate the application titled Microsoft Office 2007. Select it and click on Uninstall. It will invoke the Installer which will remove the suit from your computer. Restart your computer and install Office 2003 from the installation file or disk just like any other application. If the installation goes fine then you are all set but if installation of office 2003 aborts with an error stating “ A newer version of office is already installed”, then you need to remove the Office 2007 manually and the steps are given below.

Click on Start menu and then open the Run box. In Run box type Installer and press enter. You will get an explorer window in front of you listing all the MSI files. Go to view option and change the view to Detail. You would also need to add a column for Subject in the columns of detailed view. Now in the Subject Column look for “Microsoft Office <product name> 2007 and then right click on the particular MSI and select uninstall. Follow this steps for all the MSI files which have Microsoft Office 2007 written in the subject column. After doing this Open Services.Msc from the Run box and stop the service called “Office Source Engine”. Close the services window after stopping this service. After this manually delete the office files from the Program Files directory. Office 2007 files are located in Program Files in a folder named Office 12. You can delete the entire Office12 folder. After deleting these folders we need to delete the Office 2007 registry keys. Please take a backup of entire registry before you start deleting anything from it. The entry which you have to delete is: HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0

After deleting this key restart your computer and begin with the installation of Office 2003 which should complete successfuly this time.
