First Look: Microsoft® Office 2013

SkyDrive: Microsoft Office 2013 by default saves documents to SkyDrive, offering anytime access to content across all Windows-based devices.

Inking: The newly revealed Office 2013 enables using stylus for creating content, taking notes and accessing features. It also lets you handwrite e-mail responses, add color to content and erase mistakes.

Stay connected: An intriguing aspect about the lately released Microsoft Office 2013 is that it includes the ability to follow people, documents, teams and sites in SharePoint. To always remain up-to-date it allows viewing and embedding video, pictures and Office content in the activity feeds.

Reading, markup: The Read Mode in the latest Microsoft Office 2013 Word offers an advanced reading experience that adjusts according to the screen size of your device. Also, there is an option to zoom in or zoom out content, view revision marks, and stream videos in the docs.

Touch everywhere, utility apps, new subscription services, and digital note-taking are some other aspects incorporated in the brand new Microsoft Office 2013 suite.

How to tile two windows with just two clicks

Windows is a graphical operating system, which can be used for multi-tasking. Each and every operation in Windows can be done with the help of a pointing device like mouse or touch pad. We are now so in habit of multitasking that seldom there is just one window open. We always have more than one window open in the task bar and we keep on switching between the windows while working on various applications. We might have Microsoft Word open along with a music player, and Internet Explorer. If we have to deal with the information in these windows simultaneously then we can try arranging these applications side by side so that we can have a look at both of them at the same time. This can be done by restoring the windows and resizing and rearranging them so that they appear next to each other. Windows has an inbuilt command to do the same in just two clicks.

In this post I will let you know how to arrange/tile two windows next to each other with just two mouse clicks.

Step 1: The basic requirement of tiling two windows side by side needs to have two windows open. So please open any two windows which you wish to arrange in a tiled position next to each other.

Once you open the windows you will get them listed in the task bar at the bottom. Now is the time to arrange them next to each other and to do so you will just need two mouse clicks – one right click, and one left click.

Step 2: Right click on the task bar to open the context menu.

Step 3: Click on the option called ‘Cascade windows side by side’

That would be all. Now you have successfully arranged the two windows you were working upon side by side in just two mouse clicks. Arranging windows this way makes them of the same size and nicely arranged from top to bottom. Please note that the option called ‘Cascade windows side by side’ which we get by right clicking the task bar may vary depending upon the version of Windows operating system you have, but it will have the command for this sort of arrangement for sure. Along with arranging the windows side by side you can also click to cascade windows or stack all the open windows. These three arrangements, of cascading, cascading side by side and stacking are available in almost all the versions of the Windows operating system by default, however, the names for these arrangements can vary.  Try doing the same with multiple windows and you will be amazed to see how smartly Windows will arrange all the open windows. The arrangement is neat and there is no need to keep on restoring and manually moving the windows.

How to change the default file ‘Save As’ location in Microsoft® Word

Microsoft Word is the most widely used text editing software and most of the times we are working on it for our daily work. This text editing software now has several options for creating rich documents full of graphics, formatting, images, hyperlinks, objects, tables and anything which you wish to add in your document. By default Microsoft Word created DOC files but this extension has changed to DOCX in version 2007 and later. Microsoft continued releasing many of its applications with the same customary interface but it all changed in Office 2007 where Ribbons replaced the old Menu bars.

Whenever we open a new window of Microsoft Word it comes up with a new blank document which can later be saved or you can chose to open any existing document. When we save any unsaved document in Microsoft Word we go to the ‘File’ option and then click on the ‘Save’ option. This takes us to the ‘Save As’ box and by default it is the ‘Documents’ folder which comes up as the default folder for saving the new files. If we have to save the file to some other location then we can browse to that location and save the file with ease, but what if you always have to save the files to some other location and changing the ‘Save As’ location each time you save a new file seems cumbersome. There is a setting which can be changed to change the default ‘Save As’ location. In this post I will let you know how to make some other folder your default ‘Save As’ location in Microsoft Word.

Given below are the steps to change the default location:

Step 1: Open Microsoft Word. It will come up with a new blank document. Keeping a document open while making this change is not necessary, so if you wish you can close the file.

Step 2: Click on the Office button on top left corner in Word 2007 or later and on the Tools option in earlier versions of Microsoft Word.

Step 3: Once you have required menu open click on Word Options or Options.

Step 4: Click on ‘Save’ option in left pane in version 2007 or and later, and click on File Locations Tab in earlier versions.

Step 5: Now you will find options for default file locations and this is the place where you can change the default location for saving new documents.

Step 6: Browse to the folder and close the Window after applying the changes and that would be all.

Now whenever you will save a new document the ‘Save As’ window will by default keep your desired folder open for saving the new file.

How to Create PDF files in Microsoft® Word

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. This is the most widely used document format from Adobe which has gained immense popularity because of its features. Any kind of information, be it text, image, tables, charts, hyperlinks, etc can all be consolidated into one single document and sent across. PDF also works seamlessly on web pages and viewers for PDF files are free of cost. You can download Adobe Reader to read the PDF files. In this post I will discuss a way to save any document as a PDF file using Microsoft Word.

Step 1: create your document and insert whatever you wish to add. You can add text, pictures, tables, charts, hyperlinks, you can have multiple colours and whatever you want and save the file as a word file (DOC). Saving it as DOC would be wise because this will work as the original file which you can anytime modify.

Step 2: Keeping this file open click on ‘File’ and then on ‘Save As’.

Step 3: When the ‘Save As’ box appears click on the ‘Save As Type’ drop down and then select ‘PDF’ from the menu. Once you select PDF as the ‘Save As’ type you will get further options in that window.

Step 4: Make appropriate choices for your PDF file by clicking on the options button. These options are standard features of any PDF file and will decide the way the file views on other computer if that doesn’t have proper fonts etc.

Step 5: Click on ‘Save’ and that would be all. This way you can save your Word Document as a PDF document.

Steps given above were strictly only for Microsoft Word and if you want even other programs to be able to create PDF files then you would need to install PDF printers. PDF printer is a small application which installs a logical printer on your machine and you can select to print on it for creating PDF files. One of the best software for the same is CutePdf Writer.

Microsoft is also mentioning now that they will launch an updated Windows Phone 7 OS in early 2011. Windows Phone 7 is the key strategy point for Microsoft in the smartphone market. Everyone is expecting a bigger picture i.e. second bigger update in February at the Mobile World Congress Show in Barcelona. In this update, it will include enhanced developer controls for applications and updated components. Microsoft is very keen to update the Windows Phone 7 OS performance wise and in the CES 2011, Microsoft was clearly indicating about the updates, they are going to do in the OS.
