In another move to boost sales and reputation and to keep up with the growing industry trends, Microsoft has turned the Xbox 360 into a social entertainment and movie hub. Microsoft’s John Schappert says the Xbox is an entertainment device and not just a machine and as if to prove a point, Microsoft has just recently announced a tie up with MovieTickets.com to offer users the option to purchase movie tickets through the Xbox 360.This comes as good news to avid Xbox live fans who have wanted to make the most of the new interface though they will have to leave the comfort of their couch to actually go see the movie.
In 2008, in an effort to improve the Xbox experience, Microsoft upgraded the Xbox Live to a 3D user interface with a display similar to that of Apple`s IPod. As part of the new interface introduced in November 2008, Microsoft included Netflix rentals and personalized avatars.
The two companies` official press release stated that one could buy these tickets using one`s mobile phone thus providing a solution for online movie ticketing issues. The movie tickets can now be bought either by sending a text message or by using your Smartphone to buy the tickets via Microsoft Tag. By activating the Microsoft Tag service, when you click on the movie`s advertisement, you will be taken to a co-branded site where you can purchase your movie tickets. The price tag on this service has not yet been revealed. Also something to be noted, the tickets purchased can only be used at partner screens. A list of MovieTickets.com exhibitors can be found at http://www.movietickets.com/aboutus.asp.Critics are worried that this will reduce the fan base of the Xbox brand and that the actual Xbox experience is being compromised.
Joel Cohen, CEO, MovieTickets.com said that by working with Microsoft and the Xbox itself as a brand, MovirTickets.com is exposed to an entertainment driven audience , thus providing the perfect opportunity to engage like-minded users with their online movie-ticketing solutions. Adding that MovieTickets.com were excited to be the first company that allows users the opportunity to interact with a movie advertising experience on Xbox LIVE and to convert it into an online ticket purchase via their mobile device.
Though booking your movie tickets this way is not exactly a piece of cake, it does add to the whole Xbox experience and lets you book your tickets from the comfort of your couch. Microsoft could however, be expected to improve on this once it is up and running.
Mark Kroese, general manager, Advertising Business Group, Microsoft stated, that not only does it provide a great consumer experience, but the agreement between Microsoft and MovieTickets.com provides Microsoft and movie studios another unique way to drive awareness and ticket sales through Xbox LIVE.
