How to Find the Correct RAM for a Computer

RAM which stands for Random Access memory is the most integral part of any computer system. Not only computers but now RAM has taken a place in almost all the automatic or semi-automatic electronic devices. This is the best way and mode of saving information, settings, or some piece of code for use of the device. RAMs are gaining more and more popularity in external storage devices like Flash Drive, MP3 Players, Mobile Phones etc. As the name suggests, RAM is a kind of memory which is fast and we can read and write to any part of it at any time. Before RAMs, the memory devices were generally sequential. Examples are tape drives. Fetching data from a sequential drive was time consuming because it has to go through all the earlier data before reaching the desired data. Just think of audio cassettes in which you have to forward all the songs before you could listen to the last song. With the development of RAM, the seek time was drastically reduced and this is the reason why every computer processor relies on RAM. Every piece of data which reaches in to the processor for processing has to go from the RAM and this is the reason why speed of RAM and its capacity plays a crucial role in speeding up any computer or making it sluggish. You can purchase a very good quality motherboard and processor but if the RAM modules installed in your computer are not of adequate size and speed, your computer will not perform well. RAM modules consist of several chips which are soldered together to make a module. RAM chips operate at their own frequency and this has to match the operating frequency of the motherboard. Faster the frequency, better is the performance. You can check the size of RAM installed on your computer under the properties of ‘My Computer’, but this does not tell you about the model and type of RAM installed in your machine. New types of RAM regularly come in to the market to deliver better and better performance and you cannot mix and match the RAM types. For example if you old RAM module has maximum speed of 100 MHz then you should not install a new one of lesser MHz. This will for sure increase the total amount of RAM on your computer but will degrade the performance because the old module which was working at 100 MHz will now be forced to work at lesser frequencies to cope with the new RAM module.

Before you plan to purchase a new RAM module make sure that you check the model and type of RAM which is already installed on your computer. If you have a branded computer like from HP, Dell, SONY etc., you can get this information from their websites, but if you have a custom built one, you need to physically open the tower and check for the RAM specifications manually.

AM Radio Wattage Issue

Is a tenfold wattage zoom needed for AM radio to survive? Well, the Federal Communications Commission does not think so. However, in the opinion of some people, it still has some chance of getting the required boost and it will serve better if all the American AM radio stations can increase their signal power several times. According to Richard F. Arsenault from the commission, the AM stations need to improve their services and they must maintain the quality and usable benefits like in the past.

According to the statistical data of December 31, 2009, there are currently thousands of stations available in the United States. Of course their condition is not as good as before, due to the availability of online radio stations.

The drop in younger generation listening to AM

On the other hand, there are 6,479 commercial and 3,151 educational FM radio stations available in the United States, as surveyed on the same date. For the last couple of decades, more than 200 AM stations have stopped their service and the number of FM stations that have done similarly is twice the number. Before 1978, 50 percent of the listeners used the AM station which has now dropped down to only 17 percent. Well, this number is mainly because of older people. The young generation is fond of mp3 players or internet radio. Between 12 to 24 years of age, the AM listeners are only 4 percent and the rest 96 percent like the FM.

Quality decline in signal of AM

The problem with AM is the quality. The FM stations have better sound clarity than the AMs. To regain the lost customers, AM stations are trying very hard to develop their services. The Commission gave permission to the AM stations to broadcast their programs on the FM translators during night. Some of the AM stations shut down their services at night to resist the skywave propagation. This is the weakness in the ionosphere that sends the AM frequencies hundreds of miles from their original destinations. So without the permission from the Commission to broadcast signals to a long distance at night for a limited period of time, all AM stations must stop their service at night. The other option is to reduce the signal so that the frequency cannot go for a very long distance.

Voices against AM stations using FM translators

Some of the broadcasters do not like the FCC’s idea of letting the AM stations use the FM translators as this gives them more coverage. The translator observance guide has been published last month. However, the setup rules for an AM station were determined in 1991 and after about 20 years, things have not changed much. The major competitors of the AMs are not the other channels, but come from the other gadgets. Beside the single running audio player and online players, most of the gadgets support FM stations.

Whatever the problems and contradictions, AM is not going to close down in the near future. Necessary steps will be taken and they will continue their services in the coming years, in spite of the rejection of developing proposals by the Federal Communications Commission. They just need critical modifications. With the developed technology, it also needs to improve the number of listeners.

The storage limit of removable devices is increasing exponentially with the progression of technology. It is user friendly for its small size and its high storage capacity ranges from 256 MB to 20 GB.

Removable storage devices are divided into three types:

• Optical storage
• Solid-state storage

Magnetic storage is the most popular and widely used media for data storage. Magnetic storage is done with the help of magnetized materials. Different intensity of magnetization is induced in various devices according to their use and memory limit. The data is stored in a form of non-volatile memory. Among magnetic storage devices, hard disk is the most pronounced and mostly used for storing data. Along with hard disk, floppy disk and recording tape are also the features of magnetic storage, which have slightly different technical specifications. But hard disk is more capable of storing huge data of different types, both audio and video including images and documents. With the advancement of science and technology these analog recording devices became digital with the use of computer hard disk and other cutting edge video and audio storage devices.

Optical storage is a referred as the device which uses optical signals to read data. The data is stored by creating round patterns marks in a device which can be interpreted correctly when light is projected. CD-ROM and DVD-ROM is practical example of optical storage devices.

Lastly, the latest used technology is solid state drive (SSD) which derives from solid state physics that uses solid state memory to store data. Solid sate drive is portable and has a less operation time than others with more flexibility and durability.

Use of Removable storage is compulsory in this technological world as various personalized works are impossible without storage devices. Scientists are looking forward to invent faster and high memory storage devices.
