A need to upgrade the currently used IPv4 has been felt for quite some now to handle the wildfire like growth of the network. But experts have tried to justify their refusal to adopt IPv6 by taking support from some preset misconceptions. It is high time that we cleared our minds of these misplaced notions because due to the rapidly growing network we are soon going to fall short of IPv4 addresses.

Amongst the biases the following are the biggest misconceptions that have been doing rounds recently:

Black Marketing of IPv4 Addresses – There is a fear that the introduction of IPv6 will trigger black marketing of IPv4 addresses. In the views of the experts, in anticipation of the rise of this problem, the regional Internet registries have devised legal ways of transferring and selling the unused IPv4 addresses. It is feared that this problem may catch the experts off-guard because not much is being done by the IT departments and vendors towards this. A new policy is being considered by the regional Internet registries that will allow the transfer of IPv4 addresses. One more instance in this case is the step taken by ARIN that has announced that it would make sure that the addresses are used to provide network services and are not hoarded for future use or for black marketing.

IPv6 believed to be more secure – A myth goes around that IPv6 is more secure than IPv4. The reason why this is assumed is that IPv6 was designed with a view to implement the IPsec much more efficiently. But this doesn’t make sure that IPv6 is in itself more secure.

Adoption of IPv6 not yet required – Most of the companies have not yet made any move towards starting development work on IPv6. No amount has been laid aside for investing on this project. A large number of the experts are under the impression that the introduction of IPv6 can be delayed as there is no urgency for its adoption.

IPv4 addresses still available in large numbers – Another misconception is that the IPv4 addresses are still available in plenty. Our thinking whether IPv4 is fast running short of addresses depends on the place where we live and how fast is the rate of growth of the network. A huge shortage in IPv4 addresses has been predicted for the present year. Chris Davis, senior director of corporate marketing communications at NTT America (a leading provider of IPv6 transit and access services in USA), has called this depletion of IPv4 free address pool as a wake-up call.

Internet will be more simple with IPv6 – It is believed that IPv6 will make using Internet much more simple as its introduction will lead to discontinuation of usage of Network Address Translation (NAT) and also the removal of middle boxes, which were being used earlier to prolong the life of IPv4 addresses. But little do they realize that for some time IPv4 and IPv6, both the versions will be put to use simultaneously.

Lucky ones will get hold of the remaining IPv4 addresses – The IANA has already used all the IPv4 addresses in the month of February. Now the remaining addresses will be transferred by the regional Internet registries. According to estimates, the African registry, AfriNIC, is expected to finish last with these addresses. A one-time allotment policy will be followed. The last IPv4 addresses would be shared with multiple users.

How to Network Computers Using a Hub

Network is a logical or physical arrangement of computer to share data and resources. We need to have some network devices to build a computer network and these devices can be anything like a router, switch or a hub.

A hub is a device which is used to connect multiple computers in one network. The most common type of hub is an Ethernet hub.

Here are some of the simple steps to make a network using an Ethernet hub:

Step 1:

All the computers in the network must be switched off while you try to set up a network using a hub. Now connect the power adapter with the Hub and insert the power cable on the electrical outlet so that the hub can get the power.

Step 2:

Now you need a network cable which has to be connected on the uplink port of the hub. The other end of the same network cable must be connected into the unlink port on the router. This step is necessary if you are going to make the network with internet connection.

Step 3:

Now is the time to switch on all the computers. Now join once end of the straight-through network can on one of the numbered port on the Hub and connect the other end of the same cable on any of the computer in the network. If the setting is correct then you must see a green light on the same port.

Step 4:

You have to repeat the above steps to join all the other computers on the network. After this you need to configure an internet or network connection in the Operating System. Click on Start button and select ‘All programs’. Now go to Accessories and select Communication. Choose the ‘Network Setup Wizard’.

Step 5:

Now you will see a network setup wizard where you need to select the type of network or the connection method. You must endure that all the cables are connected and the network devices and computers are switched on.

Step 6:

Select the option ‘this computer connects through the internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway’ if you are using an internet connection. The other option ‘this computer belongs to a network that does not have internet connection’ is for the users who do not have an active internet connection.

Step 7:

Now a new message ‘this computer connects through the internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway’ will appear once you click on next for the wired and wireless Ethernet capabilities.

Step 8:

After this, you need to select the computer name for each computer and make the settings so that each computer gets the automatic IP Address and DNS Server address. You must also decide a workgroup name and all the computer in the same network must be under the same workgroup name.

These simple settings can have all the computers in one network and will allow users to share data and resources. Network can also be built even if you do not have any working internet connection.

How to Uninstall the Norton Antivirus Firewall

Firewall is basically a program which is used to monitor the networking and internet activity on a computer or a on a network. So, you need to have an extra firewall and Norton solves this problem for many users by providing firewall security with Norton Internet Security software package. It is also very important to delete all the relate files and folders even if the application is uninstalled. You need to open the Programs files and folders under ‘My Computer’. Search for the folder named Norton Personal Firewall and delete the folder permanently.


Now select the ‘Search’ option from the Start menu and type the search criteria as ‘Norton Firewall, and ‘Norton Personal Firewall’ and delete all the found result. This will remove all the traces of Norton Personal firewall from your computer.

This completely depends on the user’s choice if he/she wants to keep the firewall on computer or not. It is not necessary to remove the firewall if user knows how to use and mange it.

  • Open your internet browser and type the Default Gateway’s IP address in the address bar and press Enter. This will take you to the Login Page of the Router where you need to enter the default Username and the Password provided by the manufacturer.
  • After entering the Router Console, go into the Wireless Section of it.
  • First of all give your network a name (SSID). This will help the computers to identify your network while attempting to connect.
  • Go into the Wireless Security section now and secure your network by assigning a Passkey to it. This helps in not allowing the unauthorized computers to connect to your network otherwise anybody who comes in your routers vicinity would easily be able to use your internet connection without your knowledge.
  • Once done close the Routers console and disconnect the LAN cable.
  • Open your Wireless Manager and scan for Available Networks.
  • Your Wireless Networks Name (SSID) will also be listed in it, so just select it and click on connect.
  • When asked enter the Passkey to authenticate your computer over the network.
  • Save this network in your trusted networks list so that you are not prompted for the password again.
  • Repeat steps 7 to 10 on all the Laptops and Computers you have in your house.
  • And that would be all. Now you can move with your Laptop in your house or in your lawn without losing the connectivity. Now you have a Wireless Network of your own.

How to Choose a Computer Network Hub

Hub is a device through which multiple computers can be connected on a network and can share information. It connects computers and as well as other devices like printer, scanner etc on a local area client/server network. Cable is the means to connect the network cards of each device one wants to connect to the ports on the hub. Different types of Hubs are available in the market, out of which Ethernet hub is the most common one. It connects computers without internet connection but in order to use internet connection user need to have a router or a switch.

If we compare Hub with the present scenario, it’s like a worn-out technology which fails to meet the user’s need. In a network hub both parties can’t communicate at the same time. Basically it is used in a very small network with one or two computers and a printer/scanner. With the increase in number of computers its versatility will decrease as the computers in the network will not be able to communicate to and fro. Multiple users can communicate each other and can share information through a router.

In order to create a network hub, one needs to have a hub, more than two computers/communicating devices, router to connect to the internet (optional), network cables and a blank disk. Following are some steps to create a network hub with or without internet access:

To create a network hub without Internet Access:

Step 1

Next, turn on the computers you need to connect and then connect the hub with a computer through the network cable by inserting one end of the cable to one of the numbered ports on the back side of the hub and plug-in the other end to the computer’s network jack. Repeat the same process to the remaining computers you want to connect. If it’s done accurately green light will come on the hub the time you connect each computer.

To create a network hub with Internet Access:

Step 1

First of all make sure that the computers you want to connect to the network are off. To create a network hub with Internet access in it, you will need a router along with a network hub. Turn on the hub by connecting one end of the power adapter to the Hub and other to the electric outlet. Same process will be applied to turn on the router.

Step 2

Now plug one-end of the network cable in hub’s uplink port ant other end at router’s uplink port. (Note: If your router has got only one port then use the LAN port and don’t forget to set the switch to crossover positioned at the back side of the router.)

Step 3

Next, turn on the computers you need to connect and then connect the hub with a computer through the network cable by inserting one end of the cable to one of the numbered ports on the back side of the hub and plug-in the other end to the computer’s network jack. If it’s done accurately green light will come on the hub the time you connect the computer. Repeat the same process to the remaining computers you want to connect.

Step 4

Now to get access to Internet Windows need to be configured of each computer you connected to the network. First make sure that the devices are well connected and turned on.
