How to Map a Network Drive

Computers are mostly used on networks these days. In offices, in homes, the trend of office or personal network is increasing day by day. The central computer may not necessarily be a server, but can be a file server to safely hold important information of the users on the network. It is always wise to save your critical information on the sever rather than on the local machine because it could get deleted, stolen, or corrupt on the local machine easily, but on the server it stays safe because of the extra security measures taken to safeguard the server’s data. In such scenarios we get a share drive on the server which is a part of hard drive space on the server allocated to users. This portion or quota of the servers hard drive space is accessible by only the account holder and thus the data kept over there is quite safe, however, the network path to the folder allocated to users is at times quite long and hard to type every time you have to access the folder. Keeping this problem in mind I will discuss a simple way to assign a drive letter to such or any other network path, so that it could be easily accessed from your computer.

Assigning a drive letter to a network path is called as mapping a network drive, and it turns out to be very helpful while you save any file because now instead of opening the entire network path you just have double click on the drive letter and save the work. Let us see how to do the same.

Step 1: Open ‘My Computer’ or Windows Explorer and open the network folder which is assigned to you. It would be starting with some IP address then some sub folders, and then your folder. You will get to see this complete path in the Address Bar of the Windows Explorer or ‘My Computer’ window.

Step 2: Once you see this complete path, click in the Address Bar, select it, and copy the entire path. Make sure that you don’t miss on any back slash and copy the entire path correctly.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Start’ menu. Here you will have an option of ‘My Computer’ or ‘Computer’ depending upon the version of Windows you have. Right click on this option and then click on ‘Map Network Drive’ option in the context menu.

Step 4: This will open the ‘Map Network Drive’ window in which the first option will be to select a drive letter for your network drive. You can select any of the letters.

Step 5: Next box over there is to enter the folder location, so just click on it and paste the path which we already have in computer’s clipboard.

Step 6: Make sure that you select the ‘Reconnect at Logon’ check box so that it connects each time you login and then click on ‘OK’ or ‘Finish’.

Now open ‘My Computer’ window and you will see a new drive letter over there. This drive letter will be the shortcut to your network folder.

How to Set Up a Work Group for Wireless Printing

Computers networks have really helped a lot in reducing the cost of devices which are required in any office or home. For example you can have hundreds of computers, but just one printer which can be shared among all of them. You can have a number of computers on a network, but just one fax machine which can be used by all of them whenever required. Every computer right from the time of Windows installation is capable of getting connected to a network. By default this network is called as a workgroup. There are two kinds of network connections, first is a workgroup and second one is called as the domain. In a domain controlled network, all the network computers are controlled by the domain controller. All resources are shared and managed by the domain controller and it also controls the security and access levels. But in a workgroup, there is no central control and all the computers are in standalone mode and just share and utilise other shared resources on the network. The best example of a workgroup is two computers connected together via a router. This way they can easily share their resources without letting any controlling issues occur. In this post I will discuss how to connect a wireless printer in your workgroup so that it can be easily accessed by all the computers of the workgroup.

By default every computer is a part of a network group called as a Workgroup. Workgroup is the name but this name needs to be same on all the computers which you wish to connect together. Let us assume that you have not changed the name and it is Workgroup on all the computers of your network. Even if you are in a workgroup still all the computers must be connected through a centralised device – commonly a router (wireless router in this case).

Step 1: Configure your wireless printer to connect to the router by assigning it a valid IP address and setting up the SSID and Security Key in it.

Step 2: Once your printer is able to connect to the router, you have done half the job because now this printer has also become a part of the workgroup and is ready to be used by any of the workgroup computers.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Start’ button and open the ‘Control Panel’.

Step 4: In ‘Control Panel’ look for ‘Network and Sharing Centre’ and open it.

Step 5: In ‘Network and Sharing Centre’ click on the option on the left hand pane titled ‘Change Advanced Sharing Settings’.

Step 6: In this window enable the ‘Turn On File and Printer Sharing’ radio button and save the changes.

Step 7: Click on Network -> Workgroup and view all the devices and computers connected in your workgroup. You will see all the computers and your wireless printer in this window.

Step 8: Double click on the printer so that it gets installed on your machine for instant access. Now this workgroup printer will be available in your print window and you can use it just like a local printer connected to your machine.

Step 9: You need to repeat steps 3 to 8 on all the computers with which you want to use the printer.

How to Configure HomeGroup Networks in Windows 7

What is Home Network?

Home network is new feature which comes in Windows 7 for easily setting up a home network and share files and resources. You can easily share the files on your computer with other computers in your home and you can access the files on other computers the same way. You can access printers or scanners connected on any computer from yours with great ease.

Setup Home Network

To set up Home Network you first need to change the network you use in your house to Home Group. This can easily be done by going to Network and sharing center and selecting the network type. Make sure that you do not change a public network to Home Network because if someone else does the same on a public network then he/she would be able to access your computers resources. Only change the network you use at home as home network. Before you can connect your computer to a Homegroup you need to create it first. A Homegroup can be created by going to Control Panel -> Homegroup and then click on “Create a Homegroup”. After creating a Homegroup connect your computer to it and then walk to each computer and connect them to the newly created Homegroup by clicking “Join Now” in Control Panel -> Homegroup. Once this is done you can share all the files and resources you want to share on the Homegroup.


Homegroup is protected by a password of your choice. Password can be set while creating the Homegroup and can be changed later if required. All the computers connected to your Homegroup should be reconfigured with the password in case of password change. If you forget the password of your Homegroup then it can be found from another computer connected to the same Homegroup. Follow the following steps to get the password back:

1.                    Click Start -> Control Panel -> Homegroup

2.                    Click link “View or Print the Homegroup password”


To make the Homegroup perform best for you, please remember the following:

1.                    Make sure that the PC which you want to access is turned ON and connected to the Homegroup. Logging in is not necessary but it should not be in Sleep or Hibernate mode. This point is very obvious because you cannot access the resource of a computer if it is not ON, but this kind of issue is likely to happen if all the computers are in different rooms and you can’t see by yourself if they are ON or OFF.

2.                    On changing the Homegroup password it should be entered in all the computers which are allowed to connect to your Homegroup else they won’t connect automatically.

3.                    If your computer is also a part of any domain (tough currently not connected) then domain level policies might apply on files and folders and it might be difficult for other computers of your Homegroup to access your computer’s resources.

Homegroup is only available for computers which have Windows 7 so to use the Homegroup feature all the computers should have Windows 7 installed on them. Homegroup is available in all the editions of Windows 7.

Facebook and Twitter, the dilemma continues

It was a bizarre set of events that made two fierce competitors work in tandem to solve a problem. Although was it a real problem or it was set up remain to be seen. But a Facebook application on Twitter that helps the users find friends who are on both the networks was found to be disabled. Later on the day an email statement was released by the Facebook that said they have rectified the problem and were working with Twitter Inc to solve it as soon as possible.


It is an open secret that with the social networking market hot as ever there is fierce competition between the flagship companies like Facebook and Twitter. Now many may not know that Twitter has a very handy application that lets the Twitter users to know about their friends, if they are on both the network (i.e. on Facebook and Twitter) or not. And if they are then they can have the option of posting updates on both the sites simultaneously.

Recently it was found that this application was disabled from the Facebook side, which fueled the rumors that Facebook has purposely done that. However an emailed statement from Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg said that they are facing some crunch on this update and are not able to solve it. It also stated that they wish to work along with Twitter to find a solution of the problem.

Also in the statement he mentioned that there are four countries that yet to grip the Facebook mania to its core. The countries are namely Russia, China, Japan and Korea. And he has sincere hopes to reaching 1 billion users by the end of year. The need for better advertisement is of paramount importance as that is the only way that can make Facebook the first global networking site of the world.

Looking at the bigger picture Twitter has about 100 million users that are regular on Facebook as well. While the total count of Facebook members is about 500 million. Hence if both these services combine then Twitter will get more benefits. This has been thought to be a plausible reason for the disabling of the application.

Twitter boasts itself as a micro blogging site and there are 160 character updates while there is a similar application on Facebook hence the users are in a fix as to which one to use.

There is no way we can predict the future and it will only tell if the Facebook and Twitter integration is equally beneficial for both the companies or not. However one thing is certain and that is this phenomenon of social networking is sure to stay either individually or together.

How to Set Up a Home Network

Steps to Setup Home Network:

There are various types of networks depending upon hardware and software. It is very difficult to choose one as each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Hardware Required:

Hardware plays vital role in the formation of network as speed is dependent on it. Different type of hardware used in network is listed below. It is not the case that each and every part is essential in each type of network but user must choose it according to requirements.

1. Network adapters, hubs and switches:

Network adapters are responsible for the connection between computers and can be plugged into USB or Ethernet port of computer. In some computers it might be installed in expansion slot internally. Switch and hubs are used for connecting computers with each other. Though switch costs more that hub it provides faster speed in comparison.

2. Routers and access points:

Routers are backbone of any network. They are responsible for connection between computer and connection of different networks. Router is not necessary in wired connection but required when you want to use internet. Wireless connection demands router. Computers connect network through access points.

3. Modems:

Modem is required for internet connection through cable or telephone line. Modem is used for information transfer. If you are using cable internet, your ISP will provide you with such type of modem.

4. Network Cables:

These are not required in Wireless network which is obvious as these are used to connect computers or various compatible devices to the network.

Network Technologies:

These types are more commonly known as Network Technologies. You can chose technology depending upon the location of your computers and speed you are specific about over the network. It is very easy to setup network when you are equipped with correct firmware. There are four major types which are described one by one.

1. Wireless:

Computers in this type of network communicate with each other with the help of radio waves. There are four wireless standards which are very popular now days and are categorized mainly on the basis of speed. All the speed limits listed below can vary as per hardware used.

  1. 802.11b: Data transfer can be carried out at the maximum speed of 11 Mbps.
  2. 802.11g: Data transfer can be carried out at the maximum speed of 45 Mbps.
  3. 802.11a: It also transfers data at the maximum speed of 45 Mbps.
  4. 802.11n: This technology is growing rapidly in market and can transfer data in the range of 150 Mbps-600 Mbps depending upon the hardware used.

Advantages of using Wireless connection are mobility they offer. You can move your notebook due to absence of cables and is easy to install. Though the speed ranges given above are attractive, in real conditions wireless networks offer speed half of the listed due to obstacles like walls, large metal bodies etc.

2. Ethernet:

It is a type of wired network which can transfer data at the varying speed from 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps depending upon the types of cables used. Type of Ethernet, known as Gigabit Ethernet, can transfer data at the speed of 1Gbps under ideal conditions. An advantage of using Ethernet is the speed they provide at the low cost of hardware. It, still, becomes headache as cable has to be run between each

computer in the network.

It also require Ethernet adapter for each computer. One hub is sufficient if it is able to accommodate all the computers on network. If you want to connect to internet then Ethernet router is essential.

3. HomePNA:

This technology uses home telephone ports and wires for communication. HomePNA 2.0 can transfer at the speed of 10 Mbps where as this limit is 128 Mbps for HomePNA 3.0. As this system uses existing telephone ports, installation of hubs and routers is not necessary but telephone port must be available in each room where computer is located.

It requires PNA network adapter, router each one. It also demands one cable for each computer.

4. Powerline:

It uses electric wiring in the house to transfer data at the incredible speed of 200 Mbps under ideal conditions. In case also hubs are not required but electrical outlet is necessary in each room where computer is kept. Noise can affect data transfer in Powerline Network.
It also requires one adapter and if you wish to connect to internet then router is essential.

Google Sells Targeted Sales Campaign on iPhone

It appears that Apple Inc. is not barring Google Inc. and other companies and sites from selling their targeted ads in the iPhone and iPad applications. A few weeks ago, the company has implied that it will do just that. But, now, there is no evidence that they have. Many software developers are stating that their new and updated applications are getting approval from Apple even though the applications are permitted to serve ads by third-party ad networks like Google’s Mobile AdSense and AdMob.

Comments have been requested from both Apple and Google. However, none have come forward to address the issue on the ad services. The control system that Apple has long been attempting to implement on the mobile advertisements within its devices, such as the world’s most desired, like the famous iPhone as well as the iPad is at issue here. On Thursday, the Cupertino company from California released its own mobile advertising service called iAds. This works with brands to create interactive ads that will appear inside the applications. Apple is said to be asking for $1 million to $10 million from the marketers who make use of iAds, along with 60% of its income and revenue going to the developers.

But there have been some speculation about the intent of Apple to limit and prevent networks from competing with iAds. This happened around the time, in April to be exact, when the company changed its rules on how the development of applications in its App Store is governed.

There is no apparent reason why Apple is not enforcing this rule. However, while the mobile-advertising marketplace is quickly growing, it has attracted the inspection of regulators from different federal antitrust companies, that apps with third-party ad services are still getting their approval into the App Store so the pressure on Apple could be alleviated.
