Sony’s Nex-3 and Nex-5: Revolutionizing Professional Photography!

There was a time when professional photography was only reserved for a select few. The one major reason behind this was the inability to afford a complicated and bulky looking- SLR camera.

The DSLRs which followed the SLRs were still bulky and carrying one around was not a comfortable option. People settled for carrying a small digital camera for their everyday needs. However, with the recent launch of Sony’s NEX-3 and NEX-5 DSLRs, the distant dream of being able to comfortably carry around these superior devices, has now become a reality!

This new addition to the Alpha family claims to be the “World’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera”! They are slim, sleek and one must say, beautifully designed! They are the new generation of DSLR cameras which will revolutionize the SLR segment in the market. The NEX-3measures a mere 25.4 mm while the measures 24.2 mm(for) at its slimmest end. The screen for both is 3 inches thick and offers higher resolution than a Micro Four Thirds camera! Unlike conventional DSLR cameras, NEX-3 and Nex-5 are easy to handle and do not compromise on the high picture quality, which the DSLRs are famous for!

The unique selling point of NEX-3 and NEX-5 is the wide field of view that they offers to the photographer. Standard digital cameras do not come with this feature, which is probably their biggest drawback. A professional photographer will understand the frustrations attached with working with conventional devices. However, the new additions to the Sony family are compatible with a number of interchangeable lenses. They come with a feature known as “Sweep Panorama with 3D Capability”. Due to this distinguishing feature, when you sweep the camera from one end to the other keeping the shutter down, the camera bursts into a series of high speed frames, creating 23 megapixel panoramas with an angle of view of 226 degrees. If this doesn’t excite the photographer in you, nothing else will!

Modern day cameras are not only about clicking still pictures but also involve shooting videos. The Nex-3 and Nex-5, both offer full HD recording. They can be connected to a HD television for a high quality viewing experience! However, keeping everything in mind, the camera will face stiff competition from Sony’s traditional rivals Panasonic and Olympus, who are big players in the SLR segment. The products have been priced intelligently, starting with $549.99 for a Nex-3 with 16mm F2.8 Lens, going up to $699.99 for a Nex-5 with 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 Lens. They are due to hit stores in the UK by June this year.

Sony has delivered a number of high quality products over the years and has a great reputation in the world market. They have a fan base like no other electronics company.

Every company needs to make room for innovation to satisfy their customer’s needs. Sony has done this time and again! The new Nex-3 and Nex-5 range of DSLR cameras is a fitting example of this point! With this launch, Sony has taken professional photography from the hands of a select few to the ordinary man!

Ricoh GXR/A12 with attached 50mm Module

For the camera conscious buyer who loves a break from traditional camera designs and technology, this interchangeable sensor units camera from Ricoh is an expression of innovative design revolution that distinguishes itself from the more traditional single lens sensor units. The closest comparison products that are available in the market are quite a few. Though Samsung has a product in close comparison with this model yet the closest match with this variant is the Micro Four Thirds by Olympus and Panasonic. This makes Ricoh GXR/A12 50mm Module Camera highly desirable as a leading, innovative product that will stand out of the classic lines of imaging technology.

Owning an interchangeable sensor units camera makes much difference as this is a unique, mirror-less product that has hit the market and there are no adequate comparisons available. This makes it quite difficult to comment upon as to whether the cost of the product at close to $1200 will be worth the buck as personal preferences and the uniqueness of technology will weigh very much in this matter.

There are great technological benefits offered by Ricoh GXR/A12. The completely sealed sensor units allow for greater protection from external factors affecting any reduction of the image quality. Sensor combinations can be altered in such ways so as to obtain the maximum potential.

The ease of handling while using any particular product makes up much of the appeal it generates. The overall appearance too plays a very important matter to be considered. The beauty of the product will allow it to be comfortably placed relative to other products in its class. Though Ricoh GXR/A12 does not have any excellent beauty in comparison to other products yet, it is of excellent quality in make and performance. The handling parameters of this camera offer the relative freedom of enabling this to carried in the person without the need to have special camera bag, though it is not small enough to fit easily into the pocket. It can be set up on mini-tripods also. The weight of the camera works out quite favourably in terms of handling and the rubberised surfaces of the camera provide better grip in the hand.

Quality of image output is super as there are numerous rich features enabling the best resolution for shooting in various situations. This product offers good output in terms of image quality as it delivers good pixel level sharpness and good details. Shadow and highlighting details are also very good, making it an ideal camera for shooting in almost any situation. Low light shooting output is also of equally good quality. This good performance is wholly achieved due to the excellent quality of lens. The amount of distortion in the image quality is virtually removed and this model has very good corner-to-corner sharpness even from very wide and open shooting positions. Any residual traces of imaging defect seen over the edges of the frame will get removed in the processing phase and so the overall image is of the finest quality that can be gained from this large sensor and mirror less camera.

Canon Rebel T2I/Canon EOS Kiss Digital X4/Canon EOS 550D

The new EOS 550D from Canon is one of the latest to boast of higher technological excellence from all of its earlier Digital SLR series. This innovative product has been conceived on the face of stiff competition from other leading camera makers such as Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax etc who have recently come out with feature–rich cameras. It is known as Canon Rebel T2I in USA while it is known by Canon EOS Kiss Digital X4 in Japan and in other places this model is simply known as Canon EOS 550D.

Intended to challenge and surpass any other model of its kind, the EOS 550D is proving to be a product in its class, with a resolution capability of 18 megapixels. This is highlighted by the use of an enhanced APS-C CMOS sensor, which allows for proper exposure parameters by an algorithmic compilation of information stemming from focus, colour and luminance. The power for all these functions stems from a DIGIC 4 processor. The richness of its features is compacted into a wide body shell having a 3.0″ screen, with an aspect ratio deemed at 3:2. This allows for the full use of the screen for the playback or even for the preview of the recording. There is prominent allowance made for a large movie button that allow for manual control of the recording process and this could be used for exclusively recording views in full high definition format. This is further enhanced for operation at 3.7fps for a continuous shooting.

The provision of an external stereo microphone jack is an innovative and user-friendly application that will find much use.

In keeping with the latest trends, any copyright information can be directly input into all the outgoing images and prints.

Bringing this model at par with other digital SLRs in its class, this is armed with a Quick Control Screen. This function allows for a speedy access to a wide range of camera settings and functions merely by switching between a multi-controller or the quick command dial. The camera screen is thus transformed into a very interactive platform that allows for much user prescribed formats into the process of image capturing.

The quick control screen becomes more versatile as the display mode provides thumbnail index views in two modes. The initial four image 2×2 index can be converted into a nine image 3×3 index merely by double pressing the thumbnail index button, The four-way controller or the command dial can be used to move around images.

Playback or reviews of recordings are set to happen for two seconds immediately after a shot. This systematic review is arranged by way of default and will happen immediately after each shot. This feature can either be deleted of altered for enabling up to 8-second reviews or programmed to run on as long as the shutter button is held on. Record review process is also aimed at providing a decisive acceptance or rejection of the image feature, which helps to delete any unwanted shots.
