Record amount paid for Google™ Chrome bug

With the number of bugs on a high, Google Chrome has bugs that caused a record amount of money being paid to one researcher who came up with a significant bug. An amount of $3,133 was paid to researcher Sergey Glazunov for a single bug. Mostly, there are various levels of threats in a bug. Glazunov reported the single most critical bug in the Google Chrome version of 8.0.552.334. The bug was a stale pointer in speech handling. Two bugs were labeled medium high in rating and 13 high in rating. Google locked up its database to outsiders after 15 bugs were found from the one found and reported by Glazunov.

Jason Kersey, the program manager for Google Chrome, announced the $3133.70 Chromium Security Reward to Sergey Glazunov. The program manager said that critical bugs are harder to come by in Google Chrome, but Sergey has done it.  In July 2010, Google revised its highest payout for a critical stage bug bounty from $1337 to $3133. This came after the jump by Mozilla when it revised the bug bounty. In total, Google paid Glazunov $7,470 for reporting 5 of the 16 bugs in Google Chrome.

Sixteen bugs in all with one critical bug were the number of bugs reported. The bugs are in many components, but were mainly related to the support for extensions, PDF viewer etc. Google has announced that they were happy to make payouts to anyone who could find and report the bugs. This way Google would be able to revise their Chrome browser.

Google has already made 50 such payments to researchers who have come up with bugs. However, other programs like Android and Picasa, do not qualify for payouts for finding bugs.

Facebook to improve its photo applications

Facebook has decided to revamp is photo based products that enable users to take pics and share it on the Internet. The recent shift in strategy by Facebook comes due to the market potential that is available in the photo sharing.

Facebook being one of the largest social networking websites enable users not only to share information but also share photo and videos amongst themselves. Facebook has seen immense competition in getting nearly 500 million registered users on its networks.

Apart from creating a marketing based on its network, the new revamped photo utility of Facebook includes the following:

  • High resolution photos
  • Dedicated link to download photos
  • Bulk tagging
  • Faster downloads and uploads
  • Bulk Uploads

This is an interesting change in Facebook’s lightbox UI which has been developed to upload photos, as other networking sites like Flickr and Picasa have proven to be a major competition to Facebook’s. Experts predict that Facebook will be launching products that will enable it to expand its user base beyond social networking.

Near Ending of Google and China Spat

The Chinese authorities have expressed their negative opinion on Google’s practice of redirecting Chinese searchers their uncensored search site from Hong Kong. In order to prevent any further downfall of business the search engine has decided to terminate this redirection. Google started this activity in the month of March after a decision it made that stopped censoring of search results in the country of China.

This resulted into an almost immediate protest from the Chinese authorities. An unnamed official of the Chinese State Council Information Office said that by stopping search filters and by blaming the country as a source for alleged attacks by hackers, Google has breached the written contract it made prior to entering the Chinese market. His report further included that the action was wrong by all means and that the government of Chins was completely in opposition to making commercial issues political. The report expressed the government’s indignation and discontent towards the search engine for its accusation and conducts and termed them ‘unreasonable’. This was followed by disruptions of the Web services by Google. It prompted the search engine to introduce a dashboard displaying the status in which its offerings were. As on Tuesday only Gmail, Web search, News, Images and Ads were fully functional on Google in China out of a total of twelve services. The completely or partially blocked services include Blogger, Mobile, You tube, Groups, Sites, Picasa and Docs.

Google is planning to stop redirecting the users in China to Google.com.hk

According to his blog on Tuesday, David Drummond Google SVP and chief legal officer said that Google is planning to stop redirecting the users in China to Google.com.hk and they will be routed to a new page on Google.cn that is linked to Google.com.hk, this step has been taken under the continuing threats from the government of China. According to him the conversations that have taken place between the Google officials and those of the Chinese government have made it crystal clear that the later consider the redirection highly unacceptable, also it is obvious that a continuation of the same practice will lead to a cancellation of the renewal application of Google’s Internet content Provider license in china, the absence of this license means that Google will not be able to operate as a commercial web site hence failing in the Chinese market.

So they are left with little options apart from the chosen one, according to Drummond, it is an approach that will allow the search engine to fulfil its commitment of not censoring their results on Google.cn while still giving users an access to all of Google’s services from the same page.

According to recent reports Google is even seeking for a license that will enable it to make its mapping services operational in China. This is due to the new rules issued by the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping in China.

This is going to affect Google a lot and China was also one of the major source for web traffic generation.
