Sony® considering pulling out of Apple® iTunes®

Reports from the Australian newspaper “The Age”, say that Sony will soon pull out of its long association with iTunes. The report suggests that Sony has been working very hard on catching up with its existing customers with the help of its Music Unlimited streaming service. Further confirmations have come from Michael Ephraim, who is the  head of Sony Computer Entertainment in Australia, that once the services get  rolled out around the world,  the company may start to think about pulling out of its partnership with Apple and iTunes. The company will decide its policy on the basis of the kind of response it gets with the streaming of its Music Unlimited services. If the service gains in popularity, the company will no longer need feeds from iTunes as is the current format with the company.

The launch of Music Unlimited services by Sony was first announced in September. The following December, Sony launched the services in UK and Ireland with over six million songs being made available to the customers. Along with Universal, EMI and Warner Music, Sony delivered the songs in streams.  Sony Music Unlimited also includes independent tracks.

Ephraim envisages Music Unlimited to be a new technology that gives its customers more freedom than that of Apple. The charge for Music Unlimited has been kept to $6 per month for basic service and for premium services about $15. The features of Music Unlimited are similar to that of Pandora in allowing the users to modify their listening by expressing their liking or disliking for a song. The one good feature that Music Unlimited services has is that the services are provided to users without any ad break. It also allows the users the benefit of unlimited skip. Eventually the company aims to bring Music Unlimited to a slew of devices. At present the service providers for the company are HDTVs, PlayStation and Blu-ray Disc players.

Apple had rejected an application from Sony for access to Apple’s store that would have allowed users of Sony to get access to e-books. Apple later clarified that it was looking for developers to make the e-book available to the customers. Sony had it in mind to propagate digital reading by bringing the content to as many available devices as possible. With Apple’s stand this was not possible and therefore the company started to have serious issues with it.

Portable gaming on a budget

PSP, or the PlayStation Portable is a handheld game console marketed and manufactured by Sony. The latest version of the console, the PSP Go, was released in November 2009. It was recently announced that Sony PSP Go would soon be sold for $150 in the US. Previously priced at $200, Sony quietly decreased the price of its portable gaming console, thereby making the UMD-less portable PSP Go game console getting a $50 price reduction. Sony had proclaimed a price cut of $40 on the PlayStation Portable 3000 handheld game. Observers believe that all this is to accommodate Sony NGP that sports Quad-Core SGX543MP GPU and Quad-Core ARM Cortex A9 CPU.

Sony had announced that the price of NGP would not be $500 and it is assumed that it would be priced less than the Sony PlayStation 3 itself. 6 years ago in 2005, Sony had sold PS3 at a loss of $200 for every console; however, it is now getting the benefits of the game console hardware. According to reports, the graphical capabilities of Sony NGP are in the middle of the PSP and PSP3 game console. David Coombes, who is the platform research manager of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said that it would not run at 2 GHz. There are still some who believe that this is the best time to purchase Sony PSP Go. A major portion of the Sony’s PSP catalog still is not available online, and if you buy the PSP Go, you would not be able to play games like Crisis Core, Tactis Ogre, or the PSP remake of Final Fantasy Tactics. The NGP might probably not allow UMD trade-ups. In comparison, PSP 3000 has a bigger screen and also rests comfortably in your hands and has almost every advantage the PSP Go has, including storing downloaded PlayStation Store games on memory cards. In India, Sony had introduced the PSP Go at the start of this year for Rs 12,990 but it remains to be seen if the PSP Go would see any price cut here anytime soon.

Developers to Play key Role in Next Playstation Release

Play station is nothing but a video game console which is developed by renowned electronics company Sony. Sony has released three models of play station till date. Play Station 3 is the latest gaming console which is available in the market. It has many advantages over the old models and has become quite popular in the market. But many developers state that playstation 3 is not developer friendly. As the company’s thirst for more user friendly products never ends, Sony is trying to develop a new version of Play Station which has many more benefits than the previous versions.

Play Station’s Drawback

It will be a excellent step by Sony to update its game console. The PlayStation 3, especially when it was first introduced into the market, it was heavily criticized by many developers that creating games for this platform is very difficult. Sony also has mentioned that the current platform is very hard to process. And for a change, the next version of play station coming out from Sony will be more developer friendly. Many developers have been complaining that the hardware of PlayStation 3 is a difficult issue to deal with, making many creative developers complain about Sony and its console.

Developer’s Role

Now Sony is making some plans to fix the loopholes and make its next console much more comfortable to program it. As a result, it is bringing in many internal development studios to help in the design and provide some important feedback for development of future hardware. Sony is arranging meetings with the developers at the very initial stage of designing new hardware so that there won’t be any more issues with the next version of the playstation. It is spending more time on developing the hardware platform, connecting guys with hardware knowledge to developers.

Developing a game involves many processes by which the game will be produced. Development is completely supervised by a game developer, which may be a single person or a large number of persons and organizations. Funds for the Game development are usually issued by the company. Developing a particular game may vary from a day to many years. Therefore, the company should decide the amount of funds it wants to invest and inform the developers about the best possible output.

Sony is keen to take help of highly ranked first-party studios to make future PlayStation consoles highly straight forward for game creators of tomorrow. It is a different experience for the game creators. This means more development studios will have a hand in designing the future of Sony’s video game hardware.

In the business of gaming, Games should be created keeping all the developers in the mind. It will surely be the best possible way for the success of hardware makers. By making the next play station more developer friendly, by taking the help of its developers, Sony is indeed aiming at altering the gaming industry in a great way. It is most likely making an excellent move to become more popular in the gaming sector.
