How to Organize a Home Network

A network is the efficient way to connect two or more computers or peripherals to share resources. If you have an Internet broadband connection, then you must know how to connect your systems and devices like printers to the network. Home networks are not very tough to organize, you can do it yourself.

It is very important to know what home network is before setting it up. Home network is to connect computers and devices on a common network in offices or house. You can share files, folders and printers on home network. Before connecting network, know the components of network.

Modem is used to connect to internet. When you get an Internet connection, your ISP gives you a preconfigured Modem.

Routers are also vital part of networks. Routers are nothing but a device to allow two or more computers or devices to connect to the network. It has to be connected with modem. Routers are of two types: wire or wireless.

Computers or laptops are of course the most important body of the whole system. It can be your regular desktops or laptop. You can also connect other peripherals like game consoles, cameras etc.

Steps to organize and setup home network

You do not need to bring a professional to setup and organize home network. You just need a modem, router and Ethernet cable to set-up.

First make your mind which type of network you want to setup. It can be wireless or with Ethernet cables. Wireless network is easy to install and organize. For wireless connection, take a laptop and roam around your house to check the availability of network. Place the router at the center of the network to get the most of the network and better connectivity. Wireless networks are not very secure to use. Wireless networks are very vulnerable, insecure and easy to hack.

If you want to install network with Ethernet, install category 6 wires to every computer or printers from router. A printer can be available to network with the printer sharing feature in Windows.

If you have TV, radio or MP3 players, which are internet enabled then you can share songs and other files on home network.

Tips and things to keep in mind while setup

If the networking products are of same standard then you can mix and match. The most common wireless standard is 802.11g. You can mix all the networking devices which are of same standard.

Try to get the wireless router different from your neighbors’ to avoid conflicts. It also provides good network connectivity.

You can connect four or more computers or peripherals to presently available routers.

As wireless routers are less secure, you should immediately change the default password. It is always better to change password on regular basis to avoid security concerns.

Device Stage feature of Windows 7

As we all know, portable music players, mobile phones and devices can be synchronized with your computer by using sync software. It is provided along with device by producers; but now there is no need of this software. Windows 7 offers Device Stage feature itself. If your device is compatible with this feature it can be synchronized with computer. This feature is offered by all editions of Windows 7. By using this Device Stage feature, you can enjoy music and handle many tasks associated with device which vary from device to device. Calendars, contacts and files with important information can be synchronized with mobile phone supporting this feature.

It must be noted that synchronization of data is dependent on the type of the data; you cannot synchronize contacts in music players. So, at first you have to check types of file and data that device supports. For this, you must connect your device to system. Feature will start itself if device is suitable for Device Stage; it will run in separate window. It will provide setup for sync along with list of functions that can be performed with that particular device. This list will be different for different devices. You will have separate window for each device in case of more than one device connected with system.

Device Stage feature provides options for synchronization of music, videos etc. that differ from options for synchronization of contacts, calendars and files. After checking compatibility of device, connect it to computer. In the Device Stage window, run the Set up of sync and select type of file or data that is required to sync. There is drop-down list for each type; choose appropriate program which will be used as source for your files. It is essential to have source for files. You can download sync plug-ins if you don’t find program of your choice. By clicking ‘Sync now’, synchronize all your files and information. Additionally, you can automatically synchronize these files in future by saving changes. Specific synchronization can be done by modifying settings.

Moreover, sync setting page displays the space information of device. It gives information about how much space of device is used as well as the space which is available. It also let us know the amount of space required to synchronize music, pictures etc. As a result, you can choose files for synchronization by considering the free space present on device. One more important thing is, pictures in PNG and JPEG format can be synchronized easily but pictures of TIFF, BMP and GIF format are put in folder which is not used to store pictures. Pictures with rest of formats will not be synchronized.

You must make sure that your device is connected with computer. To verify it, go to ‘Devices and Printers’, check if device name is there. The name of device must be in the list; it may have name given by producer if you haven’t named it. If name is not present then make sure that it is properly connected and charged fully. Device Stage feature lets you to synchronize numerous files that you want but ensure that all files are in Windows libraries. You can synchronize at most 50 files that are outside Windows libraries. So, with the help of this Device Stage feature, you can deal with information of your choice with compatible devices.

Yet there is more to it when it comes to what kind of things one can do with the computer.

Despite its popularity, people are still ignorant of the full functionalities of the computer. That’s not the issue for us to discuss at this point. One thing that should be taken seriously is the importance of drivers. It doesn’t matter how versatile a user is with a computer or its accessories; printers, CD ROM, mouse etc, the driver must first be installed. Users might be aware of all these and yet remain unaware of the fact that drivers have to be updated periodically. This will be the major focus of our discussion.
