How to Map a Network Drive

Computers are mostly used on networks these days. In offices, in homes, the trend of office or personal network is increasing day by day. The central computer may not necessarily be a server, but can be a file server to safely hold important information of the users on the network. It is always wise to save your critical information on the sever rather than on the local machine because it could get deleted, stolen, or corrupt on the local machine easily, but on the server it stays safe because of the extra security measures taken to safeguard the server’s data. In such scenarios we get a share drive on the server which is a part of hard drive space on the server allocated to users. This portion or quota of the servers hard drive space is accessible by only the account holder and thus the data kept over there is quite safe, however, the network path to the folder allocated to users is at times quite long and hard to type every time you have to access the folder. Keeping this problem in mind I will discuss a simple way to assign a drive letter to such or any other network path, so that it could be easily accessed from your computer.

Assigning a drive letter to a network path is called as mapping a network drive, and it turns out to be very helpful while you save any file because now instead of opening the entire network path you just have double click on the drive letter and save the work. Let us see how to do the same.

Step 1: Open ‘My Computer’ or Windows Explorer and open the network folder which is assigned to you. It would be starting with some IP address then some sub folders, and then your folder. You will get to see this complete path in the Address Bar of the Windows Explorer or ‘My Computer’ window.

Step 2: Once you see this complete path, click in the Address Bar, select it, and copy the entire path. Make sure that you don’t miss on any back slash and copy the entire path correctly.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Start’ menu. Here you will have an option of ‘My Computer’ or ‘Computer’ depending upon the version of Windows you have. Right click on this option and then click on ‘Map Network Drive’ option in the context menu.

Step 4: This will open the ‘Map Network Drive’ window in which the first option will be to select a drive letter for your network drive. You can select any of the letters.

Step 5: Next box over there is to enter the folder location, so just click on it and paste the path which we already have in computer’s clipboard.

Step 6: Make sure that you select the ‘Reconnect at Logon’ check box so that it connects each time you login and then click on ‘OK’ or ‘Finish’.

Now open ‘My Computer’ window and you will see a new drive letter over there. This drive letter will be the shortcut to your network folder.

Microsoft acclaims Lync 2010 in Singapore

Microsoft at the Frost and Sullivan Next Generation Communication and Collaboration Summit in Singapore on December 7th, 2010 unveiled its renamed cohesive communication cum alliance platform Lync 2010.

Microsoft gallantly claimed that Lync 2010 is in its state to put back corporate PBX’s, in its launch in US previous month. Lync will help them cut cost with its all new centralized call controlling and other new phone features and will also help them to lessen the number of devices that they previously need to maintain.

In the Singapore happening, the tech giant and stupendous performer showed their boldness and was seen over poured with confidence about their newly launch version of Lync 2010 earlier acknowledged as Office Communications Server 2007.

At the inaugural ceremony held at Microsoft Asia Pacific, Mike Tuohy, General Manager of the Information Product Group said Lync is the revelation of their idea to bring together all the modes a present business communication needs. The new Lync 2010 will give the users an amplified shared platform and in-person experience of HD video, social features like updating their status as well as their activity feeds, conference facility, keeping records of conference and many more at one place. How to Start Tomcat on Linux

Tomcat or Apache Tomcat is an open source servlet container that has been developed by the Apache Software Foundation or ASF. It provides a pure Java HTTP web server environment for Java code to run, and includes tools for management and configuration. It can also be configured with the help of editing XML configuration files.

The recent Tomcat 5.x comes with a variety of features – the most important being the ability to implement the JSP 2.0 and Servlet 2.4 specifications; and assisting in reduced garbage collection, scalability and an improved performance. Additionally, it not only supplements faster JSP parsing but also provides native Windows and Unix wrappers for platform integration.

After installing dependencies like the Apache Ant build Tool and the Java Development Kit, experienced users can install and build Tomcat manually from source code.

Instructions to start Tomcat on Linux

Following steps can be looked forward to, in this regard.

Step 1: Before you go ahead with the step by step procedure to start Tomcat on Linux, you would require a computer with Linux operating system, and a Tomcat installation.

Step 2: Once you have the requirements, you would need to open a terminal.

Step 3: When you have opened a terminal, you need to proceed to access the directory where tomcat is located. However, if you are not aware of the location of tomcat, you can find it by typing the following command:

sudo find / -name *tomcat*

This command would return a list of files that are named as tomcat. One of the files in the list would be what you are looking for; that is, the directory location.

Step 4: After you are in the top level directory of Tomcat, you need to move to the bin directory. First of all, to make sure that there is a bin directory, type a ‘ls’ command. If there isn’t a bin directory, you are obviously in the wrong place and you would then need to type ‘cd bin’.

Step 5: After you get into Tomcat’s bin directory, simply type ‘./startup.sh’ (without the inverted commas). This command would execute the particular script that starts Tomcat.

Step 6: If you get an error for JRE_HOME or JAVA_HOME not being defined, then you are required to add the JAVA_HOME variable to your environment, by typing:

Export JAVA_HOME=/home/seeding/app/jre 1.5/

Although the directory would be obviously different on your system, it would be the top level directory of your Java installation.

Step 7: In case you receive the error in Step 5, type in ‘./startup.sh’ after Step 6 is completed. Tomcat would start without encountering any problems.

Step 8: You need to confirm that the following lines are displayed on screen:

Using CATALINA_BASE: /home/seedling/app/tomcat6

Using CATALINA_HOME: /home/seedling/app/tomcat6

Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /home/seedling/app/tomcat6/temp

Using JRE_HOME: /home/seedling/app/jre1.5/

This would ensure that Tomcat has started successfully.

Though it may seem to be a complicated procedure at first, closely following the step by step instructions would make sure that Tomcat starts on Linux without any problem whatsoever.
