Viruses, Spyware, and Malware

Nowadays, computers and Internet play a major role in daily life. With the increasing use of computers, there has been a rise in security threats such as viruses, spyware, Trojans, worms, etc. Computer users are suffering losses due to malicious programs which easily install themselves from the Internet or other sources, and multiply by downloading other infected software. These malware are categorized as virus, spyware, and Trojans, just to name a few. Each of these programs harm your computer in different ways.

A virus is a program created with the intent of damaging important system files, corrupting the software, and causing various  kinds of errors. A virus can infect other computers as it spreads through the Internet, CDs, DVDs, pen drives, etc. The common symptoms of a virus infected computer include slow system performance, frequent occurrence of blue screen error, and hanging of applications.

Spyware is a type of program that infects your computer and starts collecting confidential information stored on the system. A very common spyware program is the keylogger which records keystrokes while a user is typing on the keyboard. There are other spyware which will trace your actions and browsing behavior on the Internet.

It is necessary for users to take security measures to ensure computer protection. You can install an effective antivirus and antispyware on your computer. Users should periodically perform a full system scan for the detection and removal of malware. The virus definitions should be updated regularly so that the security software is able to detect the latest security threats.

If you want more secure mode you can use without networking. This safe mode option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows.NET only this Safe Mode with Networking minimizes the number of drivers being used which in turn increases the speed and efficiency of the detector.

This safe mode option also starts Windows by using the previous good configuration. Not only is this safe mode valid only for Windows-based domain controllers. This mode also performs a directory service repair.

Return to OS Choices Menu if a computer that is configured to starting to more than one operating system, this option returns to the Boot menu. When you are using the safe mode for booting then an environment variable is created when you use one of the Safe Boot option.

Running of antivirus software in safe mode helps the computer in performing efficiently without creating any hindrances.

How to update your Antivirus Program

Computer viruses, Trojans, worms, malware and other infections are potentially dangerous threats that badly affect the functioning of your computer. These threats are frequently created by malicious users, and to protect your system against such malware, there are multinational companies who are invariably involved in the process of developing antivirus software. These antivirus applications not only prevent the computer and detect the virus but also keep updating themselves to detect any new types of virus being released on the web.

It is necessary to keep your antivirus scanners up to date otherwise the computer would be vulnerable to any virus or worms that have been released after your last update.

How to Update your Antivirus Program

Go through all the following steps in order to update your Antivirus program properly

Step 1: First of all, update your antivirus program in case the update wasn’t performed at the time it was installed; or because of you not having an Internet connection at that time. It is a very crucial procedure and must be performed before you go ahead with the other updates.

Step 2:  Now you need to update your virus definitions, or the ‘signatures’ that identify known viruses. At the time of buying the software, you also get a subscription for an update service that allows you to download any new virus definitions. This subscription is most often for a year, after which you would have to buy a new subscription.

Step 3: It is also necessary to upgrade your existing antivirus program. The companies of such programs keep releasing new versions of the software every few years to tackle unknown or latest viruses affecting a computer. By purchasing the new upgraded programs, you will get access to latest features and enhanced virus protection, as well as fresh subscription for virus definition updates.

Step 4: Scheduling automatic updates is also a method you can follow to avoid threats in the form of viruses. If you go for manual updates, there’s a good chance of you forgetting to perform them. This can result in your virus definitions falling behind and making your computer more vulnerable than before.

Step 5: You can also go for the option of purchasing a comprehensive or a specialized program that not only deals with viruses but other forms of threats in the name of spyware, malware, Trojans and worms. It often happens that the existing antivirus protection is not good enough for people to protect their system against new threats. In such cases, buying additional or more comprehensive programs are a good way to keep your system highly secure.

Step 6: There are some software packages that can be downloaded free of charge, for handling specific problems. For this purpose, there are programs like Lavasoft’s Adware and Safer Networking’s Spybot.

By following all the above steps, it can be assured that the computer’s security against outside threats is maximized. Buying and downloading Antivirus software, and leaving it aside on the system is never enough; a regular check is the most essential part of purchasing the program.

How to Uninstall System-Security Software

There has been an advent of software programs in the market which, though appearing to be virus removal applications, are actually rogue applications. System Security is one such application which installs harmful viruses and Trojans in a computer instead of protecting it.

Removal of this virus program manually may be an extremely advanced procedure and it is recommended not to be performed unless you have an extensive knowledge of computers and hardware.

Instructions to uninstall System Security

Step 1: The first step involves rebooting your computer as soon as the ‘Welcome’ screen appears, in order to open the Task manager before the System Security program loads. Because of the computer being infected by System Security, it may take some time for the Task Manager to come up.

Step 2: In the upper right hand corner of the System Security screen, click on the ‘X’ button to exit the rogue spyware program.

Step 3: Look for the program called ‘56147831.exe’ under the ‘Processes’ tab in the Task Manager window. Right click on this program and then select ‘End Process’. When you are finished, minimize the Task manager window.

Step 4: Then open the web browser to navigate to combofix.org. To obtain the free spyware removal program, click on the green ‘Download’ button. When the downloading has finished, run the program.

Step 5: When few pop up dialog boxes appear telling you that Combofix is possibly a virus, click on OK. Combofix pretends to be a virus for ‘tricking’ the rogue System Security application. A window then appears telling you that Combofix is ready to load, to let you know that the program has stated working.

Step 6: Combofix would scan all the files after it has loaded. This procedure can take up to 10 minutes, depending on how badly the system has been infected.

Step 7: A pop-up dialog box will appear telling you that Combofix has found a ‘rootkit activity’ (System Security) and needs to reboot. Click on OK and allow Combofix to reboot the computer by itself.

Step 8: When the computer has been rebooted, avoid clicking ‘Send’ or ‘Don’t send’ on the error reports that come up, and set aside these windows.

Step 9: It will take a few minutes for Combofix to delete the corrupt files automatically. When you see ‘C: \Windows\xsystem32’ over and over again, click the ‘X’ button in the upper right corner of the Combofix window.

Step 10: If you are unable to view your desktop icons, click Ctrl+Alt+Del. Click on File>New Task and then type ‘explorer.exe’ into the ‘Open’ bar, and click on OK when you are done.

Step 11: Open your web browser, go to Malwarebytes.org and download and install the free version of the application.

Step 12: After opening Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware software, check the ‘Full Scan’ option and click the ‘Scan’ button. This will remove any remaining corrupt files from the computer. To delete the corrupt files permanently from the system, open the ‘Quarantine’ tab.

Despite the removal of System Security being a complicated procedure, it can be made relatively simple by following the above steps.
