How to Speed Up Windows® Shutdown

Windows is the most widely used operating system. We intentionally or unintentionally install so many applications and programs on it that after sometime the operating system becomes sluggish. Being the most widely used operating system it is also the prime target of viruses and other infections which worsen the situation. All this does not only result in slow working of the computer but also results in slow start-up and slow shutdown. In this post I will discuss some ways to speed up the shutdown process so that your computer does not keep you waiting when you need to shut it down.

During this tune up you will need to edit the Registry Editor and incorrect editing of the Windows Registry can lead to further instability or complete crash of the operating system, so please take a backup of your Windows Registry before proceeding with the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Click on the ‘Start’ button and then on ‘Run’. If ‘Run’ option is not available then press the ‘Windows’ key on the keyboard along with letter ’R’.

Step 2: In the ‘Run’ box type ‘Regedit’ and press ‘Enter’. This is the command for opening the default Registry Editor of Windows operating system.

Step 3: Once you have the Registry Editor open go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then go to ‘Control Panel’ and then to the Desktop.

Step 4: Now in the right side pane double click on ‘HungAppTimeout’ and change the value to 1000.

Step 5: Do the same for ‘WaitToKillTimeout’, and change it to 1000. Also change the value of ‘AutoEndTasks’ to 200.

Step 6: Now go to the key called ‘Default’ under HKEY_CURRENT_USER and there open ‘Control Panel’ and then the ‘Desktop’ key.

Step 7: Now in the right side pane double click on ‘HungAppTimeout’ and change the value to 1000.

Step 8: Do the same for ‘WaitToKillTimeout’, and change it to 1000.

Step 9: Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then to ‘Control Panel’ and then to Desktop.

Step 10: In the right side pane double click on the ‘WaitToKillServiceTimeout’ and change the value to 200

Technically this would be all and now your computer will start shutting down faster.

Use Hibernation as an alternative

You can turn ON the Hibernate feature of Windows operating system so that you can turn off your system without losing the current state. Next time when you will start your computer, you will get it in the same state where you left it. All the open applications and files will be open and ready to work upon. This is a quick shutdown option. In the ‘Hibernate’ mode, your computer captures the image of data in the memory and saves its image in the hard drive. On turning on the computer the same image is restored into the memory so that you get the same state where your computer was before hibernation. Hibernating the computer is fast as it does not try to close all the running applications and services. Try it and it will save quite a lot of your time if your computer takes long in shutting down.

How to Back Up and Restore Your Windows Registry

The Windows registry is an important database in your computer containing all information on various configurations of Microsoft Windows. Information on addition and removal of devices, installation and uninstallation of software as well as modification of software, is stored in the Windows registry. In addition to these there could also be some information about user preferences.

Storage of Information

Information in Windows registry is stored in a particular structure with a hierarchical table of keys. Also, there are sub keys and values. Backing up is important because in case any of the information in the registry is modified in an incorrect manner, your computer could get seriously damaged. If you have the registry backed up, you can recall the information and repair your computer. The registry is not located in one file but located in many files in different locations.

Backing up registry files

If you are using Windows NT, 2000, XP or Vista you cannot back up files while you are using the Windows operating system. Here system restore facility automatically backs up your computer’s registry files to be used at a later occasion, if the need arises.

While you are using the Windows operating system you may have to use the registry editor to export files and save them using the backup utility software. To carry out this task you can do the following

  • Click Start and go to Run
  • In the open box, type ‘regedit’ and click ‘OK’
  • Now you can locate the root sub-key which contains the junior sub-keys you want to backup
  • Click “File” then “Export”.
  • Now you can use the ‘Save In” box, to choose a location for the .reg files to be saved.
  • Give a file name and click ‘Save’

Restoring the registry

Restoring the registry is not a tough task if you use good backup software. Launch the software and it will restore the system. In case the computer has lost some of the registry files it will not run the utility. In such a situation the best way out is to use the recovery console and recover the lost file.

Once you get your system running you can use the backup software and do the restoring. There is s software that could do both backup and restore. Backing up and restoring the registry is made very simple when you have this software.

If you need to restore using ERD, boot your computer using the Windows CD. When the welcome to setup screen appears press R to repair the operating system. Again press R for repair from ERD. You can then follow the prompts to carry out the repair using ERD. Select the correct menus to specify the files you need to repair.

Backing up registry and restoring it comes in handy when your computer starts malfunctioning due to problems arising from damage to registry files or due to files getting infected by viruses. There are occasions when some software also creates such problems. Windows has the system restore utility that does the job automatically.

How to Make Your Computer Faster: Registry Cleaner, Improving PC Performance

A lot of people wonder why their PC functions slower than they expect it to. There are many reasons behind this. However, not always do you have to change the RAM to install a higher memory or increase hard disk space by installing new hardware to your PC. There are many ways to make your computer work twice as fast as it is at present.

Microsoft’s Anti-Spyware Program (Free to download from Microsoft Windows Defender)

Once you have this program installed into your PC, you must run “Msconfig” in the “Run” option that you see after pressing “Start” on your toolbar. This cleans your computer of all unnecessary programs. At this point you must also delete random files and spyware from your “Temporary” folder on your C-drive that may have entered your system while browsing the internet

Now start your computer in “Safe” mode by pressing the F8 button continuously as your computer starts booting.

Adaware (Free to download from Lavasoft Downloads)

Before your computer was made to run on “Safe” mode you should have installed the Adaware program. In “Safe” mode you can run it to remove additional Spyware and update your existing programs to their latest versions.

Spybot (Free to download from The Home of Spybot-S&D)

Spybot can also clean the system in the “Safe” mode of unnecessary and harmful malware.

HijackThis

You can download this program from merijn.org to detect unnecessary programs that are running on your computer that may not necessarily be malicious. While this detection test runs you must make a log file that can be run against the Automated Log Analyzer to detect these useless programs. You can delete them after the scan is complete.

Microsoft’s Anti-Malicious software is also good for detecting programs that enter your system to destroy it. The latter is also known as a rootkit. The BLBeta Expert is another such tool used against rootkits.

Internet Explorer

If you are an Internet Explorer user you must customize certain settings to prevent downloading unsigned ActivX Controls or initialize and script unsafe ActivX Controls.

Any Activ scripting including that of Java Applets must be disabled as well.

All this can be done by browsing through “Internet Options” in “Tools” on the upper taskbar of an Explorer window.

You can also customize settings accordingly to prevent opening harmful websites. You can choose individual websites by the URL to allow them to open by adding them to “Favorites”.

Firefox

Open New and Integer by right-clicking after typing “about:config” in the address bar space. To protect against flash pop-ups you must type “privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins” and “2” in the two windows that open.

Recycle Bin

You may not be aware of this, but without customizing the space used by the Recycle Bin results in it taking up a lot of your memory space. You can set this at 1-3% by right-clicking on the icon to go to “Properties” and adjusting the bar down to the desired level.

DMA

Make sure that your Disk Manager Application is on by adjusting the settings on the “Hardware” option of “Properties” that appear by right-clicking on the “My Computer” icon. This allows data from your removable drives such as CDs and USB storage devices for direct memory access instead of going through the system processor.

Windows Registry

Clean the Windows Registry regularly and do system scans ensuring back-up every now and then to get rid of unwanted functions and programs.

All these features should speed up your PC considerably.
