In yet another disaster preparedness exercise the department of Homeland Security has run a simulation of a cyber attack, in order to test the readiness of the various government agencies.
The exercise has been termed as “Cyber Storm III” which is the next level of testing against safeguarding a cyber attack, which involves thousands of participants from US governmental departments, 11 US states, 60 private sector companies and 12 international companies.
According to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, “Securing America’s cyber infrastructure requires close coordination with our federal, state, international and private sector partners. Exercises like Cyber Storm III allow us build upon the significant progress we’ve made in responding to evolving cyber threats.”
The test was organized by National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center, which is based outside Arlington, Virginia.
Ironically it was the same time when Iran has been “bombed” by a vicious cyber attack. Many experts predicted that the Stuxnet worm might have been planted by an institution or even an agency. It is these kinds of cyber attacks that the US and many countries would like to safeguard against.
