ARM is a big name in the tech world and they are a leader in the microprocessor intellectual property. ARM is famous for designing low-cost, low-power RISC processors and other peripherals. ARM is also the number one architecture used 32-bit ISA. According to a report in 2007, 89% of the billion phones sold every year are using at least one ARM technology in their phone. This is due to their cost-efficient small microprocessors and microcontrollers.

IBM is also the famous x86 makers that dominates microprocessor market today.ARM processors are widely used in mobile phones, music player, digital devices, gaming consoles, calculators and also in computer hardware like hard disk drives. IBM is a big name incomputer hardware and software, and it also offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas like mainframe computers to nanotechnology. There is also one problem with Smartphones that they are not as fast as the laptops. So, these small processors will also increase the computing speed of Smartphones. As most of the consumers now prefer working on Smartphone rather than their laptops or desktop, it will also make them more capable of doing more work on Smartphones.

Recently ARM announced that they will continue their union with IBM, the computing giant and they are planning to work on low-power consuming processors for Smartphones. They are collaborating to create smaller, faster chip designs which won’t eat through as much power. They are also planning to cooperate with each other to manufacture chips and design processes from the earliest stages in order to achieve this dream.

The partnership between ARM and IBM will result in a 14nm manufacturing process size. If we compare with the current 40nm and 32nm that is also developed with the collaboration of IBM, it is minuscule. They have proven themselves with quality processors and now Smartphone manufacturer are excited about the ability to manufacture tiny, cheap, powerful chips with low energy consumption.

General Manager at IBM Microelectronics, Michael cardigan said, “We plan to continue working closely with ARM and our foundry customers to speed the momentum of ARM technology by delivering highly advanced, low-power semiconductor technology for a variety of new communications and computing devices.”

With the growing Smartphone users and the growing popularity, it is very important time to innovate new ideas like ARM and IBM is doing. There will be power-efficient and low-cost Smartphone available if they will be able to successfully develop this project. There is very high demand for Smartphones and tablet computers, the main advantage of using these devices are the tiny size and movable features. They run on batteries and it is always not possible to get it charged everywhere, so, this low-power processor will benefit consumers. Everyone is hoping some more innovations in Smrtphones not just on its outer looks but also in its processor speed and low-power technology.
