Popular social networking platform Facebook has added a new feature for organ donors. The new feature makes it easier for users to register themselves as organ donors.

Initial response of users

The new option was announced on 01st May by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg with an objective to boost the number of potential organ donors. By the end of the day, 6,000 people had enrolled through 22 state registries, claims Donate Life America, which promotes organ donations and is working with Facebook on this project. On a normal day, those states together see less than 400 registries.

David Fleming, chief executive of Donate Life America, responded to this by saying, “The response “dwarfs any past organ donation initiative.”

The Facebook feature allows users to share their decision to be an organ donor through the social platform. A link on the site connects the users to online donor registries. As of now the feature is available in the U.S. and the United Kingdom only. Similar to other personal information on Facebook, organ donor status too can be kept private or shared publicly or only with friends.
