There have been tremendous shifts in technology daily; there was time when printing could be done from a single location. And each office shared a single printer, though the cost of printers was going down, but they occupied space. The cost of ink also added to the final cost of printing. And if you are down with ink, forget about printing for an hour or so. But technology has moved away from laser and inkjet printing to inkless and mobile printers.

Many companies have launched inkless printers which uses a host of patented papers which color up on heating. While these printers are so small, they can be even carried in your bag. Looking at the technology drive it is not wrong to speculate a printer which can be put in pocket. While talking about these inkless & mobile printers, here how they work:

  • As they don’t require ink, they are very small in size compared to all the earlier versions of printers. So small that they are portable. These printers don’t contain ink, but are fitted with heat resistors on the glass screen inside the printer. These glass screens heat up when supplied with exact electric current. Every section of glass can be heated for different temperature.
  • In this printer, only a certain patented paper which consists of pigments of ink itself can be used. The ink in this paper cannot be seen, but reacts to temperature change. And for every color a specific temperature is set. As the heat is supplied the dyes are activated. The chemical reaction thus taking place converts these color less and specifically designed crystals into rich color dye on the paper. The color light up and the photos are printed without ink.
  • The paper contains dye crystals where some crystals can turn magenta, some cyan and some yellow. Basically before printing the papers are colorless. The papers are made up of five layers, base layer, magenta layer, cyan layer, yellow layer and over coating. The base layer is an adhesive layer the paper back to provide the base for the layers to come. Then the cyan layer comes which contains only cyan colored dye pigments which are released at the lowest temperature.
  • Then it is covered by magenta layer which similarly contains only magenta pigments and is released at a slightly high and specific temperature. After that the final layer of colored pigments is that of the yellow color, which lights up at the highest temperature. Lastly there’s an over coating layer to protect the color, and is made up of polymers. It seals the final image, and also protects t from sunlight, dirt and chemicals. When the paper is put in to the mobile printer and the image is visualized by the printer, the paper goes through a thermal print head. There is where the colors are activated on thermal application.

These printers are less on maintenance, as even the office supplies needed are not there such as ink. They are not bulky and very light to even carry everywhere. They don’t make a single noise at all. The printing cost is also economical. These inkless and mobile printers have paved way for new age of printing to begin and surely are going to be a big hit.
