It is relatively easy to obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft Jet 4.0 database engine but there certain things that you need to know first before making the download. First of all, you need to determine the Jet 4.0 release level that you are using as it in your computer currently. This will give you an idea of what to look for when downloading the Jet 4.0 version that supports your machine. It kind of makes work easier for you and saves you a lot of time. However, perhaps I must add at this point that, given the fact that there are different versions of Microsoft Windows, the procedures I intend to share with you below might not be general for all computers depending on the version your are using. But if you find the below instructions useful, then tag along.

To find out the Jet 4.0 you have installed in your computer, do the following;

First of all, click on the Start tab at the bottom left side of your computer and click again on the Search tab, you should easily see it once you have accessed the Start menu. Once here, in the Search results window, click on the All files and folders tab that you should easily see under Search Companion. Simply enter the text Msjet40.dll in the All or part of the file name box on the search pane and click search. You will be given a list of files and from them right click on the Msjet40.dll file that you will find in the windows system 32 folder and in the folder simply click on Properties. However, if you are using a 64-bit version of any windows operating system, then the Msjet40.dll file will be located in the windowssysWOW64 folder that you should be able to locate easily.

Once you are here, simply click on the Version icon for you to determine the existing Jet 4.4 service pack level that you are using. But at this point, you will pointers depending on the service pack you are using. In that regard, Microsoft has a list of their Msjet40.dll versions and the Service Pack levels that they can be used on. Simply visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114for the list that will help you determine your computers level.

From the level of service pack Jet 4.0 engine you have determined that you are using, it should be easy to obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft Jet 4.0 database engine. However, perhaps you need to know that Microsoft has availed around five versions of the Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 that you can download. In that respect, the first version is meant for PCs that operate the Windows 2000 operating system whereas the second version, the third, fourth and fifth are meant for computers running windows XP, server 2003, 95, NT 4.0 and 98 and lastly the Millennium Edition respectively.

Find your download accordingly and upgrade as you wish.
