It is common knowledge by now that the system needs to be constantly updated and checked to avoid virus and other risks that are potentially dangerous to the system. One of the famous software used for this purpose is the Norton Antivirus, which was developed and distributed by Symantec Corporation. It not only helps in protection against malware but also provides other uses like phishing protection, e-mail spam filtering, data privacy and computer firewall services.
In order to take all precautions to protect the network, some multimedia applications and peer to peer file sharing can be blocked by Norton Internet Security. To let these programs work on the computer, the ports need to be allowed for communication so that they can be used with the Norton software.
Instructions to Allow Ports in Norton Antivirus:
Step 1: Double click the program icon on the desktop to open the Norton Internet Security control panel.
Step 2: In the primary Control panel screen, select the ‘Settings’ menu selection. Then choose the ‘Configure’ option in the ‘Smart firewall’ tab.
Step 3: Select the ‘Configure’ option which is under the ‘Advanced settings’ section of the menu. Then click on the ‘Add’ menu button. In the ‘Add rule Wizard’ option, click on ‘Allow’ followed by ‘Next’.
Step 4: The next step involves allowing the connections. Choose the option that says ‘Connections to and from other Computers’. Then click on ‘Next’. On the next menu, click the option which says ‘Only the computers and sites listed below’. Proceed to click on the ‘Add’ button.
Step 5: Click on “individually’. Then select the name of the website or the URL which the computer is trying to connect to and which is being blocked by the Norton software. Once this is done, click on the ‘OK’ button. Then click on ‘Next’.
Step 6: Choose the menu option that says ‘Only Communications that match all types and ports listed below’. Select the ‘Add’ button.
Step 7: Click on ‘Individually specified ports’ and enter all the port numbers that are being blocked by the Norton Internet Security program. Even if you don’t know the port numbers, they will be displayed by the firewall when the specific multimedia program or the file sharing fails to run on the system. For opening Torrent sites, the most common port number is port 55944. Once you have entered the port number, select the ‘OK’ button followed by ‘Next’.
Step 8: A name for the new firewall rule needs to be entered. When this is done, click on the ‘Next’ and then the ‘Finish’ menu button. This is the last step required in allowing the desired ports to work with the Norton Antivirus program. Exit Norton security after that and restart the computer if you wish.
The above instructions help in allowing and opening of desired ports to enable file sharing and running multimedia applications. However, one needs to be cautious of unauthorized torrent websites which may contain illegal data which may get you in trouble even without any fault of your own.
