When using Excel, you might sometimes throw off the settings and default template. Which means that no matter how often you close and reopen a new spreadsheet Excel is holding onto some of the previous settings? This sometimes becomes really annoying, especially when you’re trying your best to start a fresh spreadsheet and are used to the default settings. But to your rescue, restoring those settings to their defaults is a relatively quick and easy process. The following steps will guide you how to do that.
For Excel 2003 or Earlier
Select the “C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. “And then Open “My Computer” and open the “Documents and Settings” folder. Then Open your username, the “Application Data,” “Microsoft” and finally find the “Templates” folder.
After the templates folder Rename the Book.xlt and Sheet.xlt files to something that you will remember. Though this step is optional, but it allows you to save the settings for later use. After this either move these files, or delete them if you don’t want to use the template again. In case if there are no XLT files in this folder, then continue below.
Go to “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\XLStart.” and Navigate to “Program Files,” Open the “Microsoft Office” directory and Select “Office11” and then “XLStart.”
Search for any template files inside this folder–these are any files with an “.xlt” extension. If you find any, then delete them. If there are not available, then continue below.
Now you need to Open Microsoft Excel, and locate the “Options” settings under the “Tools” menu.
Click on the “General” tab and note which folder is listed at the option“Startup, open all files in.” Either Minimize or close Excel and navigate to the folder listed in that box.
Delete any of the existing XLT files in that folder. If you want to save them for later use, then do not forget to rename the template using a name you will remember.
And then open, or close and reopen Microsoft Excel to verify the settings returned to default.
For Excel 2007 or Later
First you need to Open Microsoft Excel.
Then Navigate to the Help menu and open the “Detect and Repair” function. After The Detect and Repair dialog will appear if you want you can restore your shortcuts at this time, and then check the appropriate icon.
Now click on the “Start” icon. After Waiting for a short period while Office deletes all of the settings on all of the programs in the suite and restores it to its original installed state. This will then apply to the settings to Word, PowerPoint and Excel, and any other Office programs you have installed.
