Home network can be established in various ways and this is the reason why it is difficult to decide which one is suitable. There are four common types of network technologies which do not differ much in cost. These are:

  • Wireless
  • Ethernet
  • HomePNA and
  • Powerline

You can choose the one best suited for you depending upon location of the computers and desired speed of the network. You also have to collect required hardware. Once you are ready with everything follow the four steps listed below in order to setup your home network.

First you have to install necessary hardware in the system. In short you have to install network adapter wherever required by the computer. For this purpose you can refer the instruction manual associated with each adapter as techniques may differ with adapter. You further need to verify the internet connection if you are willing to setup network to share the same. To setup such kind of network you need cable or adapter to connect to internet and of course account with Internet Service Provider. If you are currently holding an internet connection then you just have to verify if it is working or not.

How to choose the right network Connection

As stated earlier there are various types of networks that can be connect to your PC at home.. In Ethernet connection you make use of switch, Hub or router to connect computers. If you are willing to share Internet connection then you must connect router to the computer holding modem. Wireless connection is simple to establish. You just have to run a ‘Setup a Network Wizard’ on a computer holding router and this wizard will instruct you how to set up connection with other computers. HomePNA network demands HomePNA adapter with each computer you are willing to add in network and a phone jack in each room containing computer. In Powerline network you have to turn on all the devices and computers in network and check its status.

Now network is established and its time to share files between computers in network. For that purpose, type of network connection must be Home or Work and sharing must be allowed. Everything is done. You have also enabled sharing on network. Now you have to examine the network. This network test will tell us if all the computers and devices are working properly or not. You have to check network tab in each connected computer. If you can see all the computers on the screen then network is in good condition. This test must be performed on each system contributing to network.

Configuring the Network

Even if nothing displays on the screen it doesn’t mean that network is faulty. Computers having older versions of windows appear after some delay. You must also check if network sharing and file discovery is active or not. To protect network from outside threats, you might want to change TCP/IP settings. These settings are listed in ‘properties’ of Network Connections. You can create a unique IP configuration of which only last 3 numerical will defer for each computer. It enables us to identify computer in network. Setting up a network between series of computers let us work more efficiently. If the person working on a computer wants to access data on the other computer it is possible with proper network format. Thus it contributes in reduction of time and increased output.
