Despite the instant information and other benefits an Internet connection has provided, slow network and internet connection problems are becoming more and more common. The slow connection speed can be due to factors like line quality, modem speed, windows cache, browser settings and the quality of the internet service provider. For starters, it can be found out by guiding the mouse pointer over the internet connection icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, on the taskbar. Thereafter, the web cache settings can be accessed. Then the web cache can be made as small as possible. It results in a faster and speedier internet connection. Here one can also access the ‘Disk space to use’ option and reduce it to minimum recommended amount.

The second step involves cleaning and clearing temp files. For this, deleting the web cache is a good measure to speed up the connection. Why this is useful is because while accessing the internet, cookies are loaded and updated continuously by the computer. So if one clears up the web cache regularly, it helps to unload the work done by the computer, thereby increasing the connection speed. To erase the temporary internet files, certain steps are to be followed. Firstly, it needs to be made sure that no web browser is open. Then the ‘Control Panel’ option is selected after clicking on the ‘Start’ button. Thereafter, ‘Internet options’ icon is selected. A window appears with different tabs at the top. In the ‘General’ tab, ‘Delete files’ option needs to be selected, followed by checking on the ‘Delete all offline content’ in the dialogue box that appears. Alternatively, one can open the internet explorer and select on the ‘Tools’ menu. Then ‘Internet options’ needs to be selected. In the ‘Temporary Internet files’ option, select ‘General’ and click on ‘Settings’. After choosing ‘View Files’, the ‘Delete selected files’ option is selected.

Step three involves speeding up of web pages through the web browser settings. Managing these settings helps in saving time to load a web page. The instructions to be followed involve accessing the Control Panel followed by selecting ‘Internet options’. After clicking on ‘Settings’, one needs to go down to ‘Multimedia’. Fewer options can be checked here to help in greater speed.

Other steps to maintain reasonable speed can also relate to controlling Anti-virus programs and altering settings for the Firefox browser. While running virus scans throughout the different disk drives, fragmentation of files is caused. This must be organized and maintained by customizing the settings of the program through the startup tab.

Although slow internet speed may be a result of a lot of external factors like low quality of telephone lines, poor service provider, Network card issues for which nothing much can be done, it can be ascertained that following the above steps can minimize the issues which result in slowing the internet speed.
