After the installation of the Windows Vista service pack, there might be some of these problems with sound: There might be no sound on playing audio files or programs that have an audio component will not run. The speaker symbol may display the following message: No Audio Output Device is installed. The Sound Controller in Device Manager displays a yellow exclamation point.

In order to fix these problems automatically, click the Fix this problem button or hyperlink. Next, click Run now in the Automated Troubleshooting Services page and follow the procedure in this wizard. After that, you must go to the section titled “Did this fix the problem?”

Steps to be followed in Manual Troubleshooting

In this article, several ways are mentioned to resolve this problem. You can choose out of these. Please ensure that you check if you can hear sound subsequent to trying each method. To check the sound, you must play an audio file using a program such as VLC Player or Windows Media Player.

To resolve the problem on your own you can follow any of the given methods. In the first method: you need to restart your computer after the installation of Vista. If you can hear sound, then the problem is solved. If you don’t hear, then jump to the second method: try plugging a different sound device into the computer. If this method fails, you can use third method: unplug the computer speakers or related sound devices that you might be using, like headphones, from the computer and then re-plug them back into that very port. There is yet another way, after the installation of a Windows Vista service pack, the default sound device, also called the playback device, was changed. Make sure that the default sound device is set fittingly for the sound device that you use. In order to set the default device, you must follow the following steps:

First you must click Start, type Sound in the Search box.

Thereafter, you must click Sound in the search results on top of Start menu.

Next, you should click Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers. You must see to it that your audio settings are configured as projected. If that is the case then you must follow these steps:

  • On tab Playback, you should select playback device, then click Properties, then click Advanced tab, and see to it that the Default Format is set to value that you expect. After you are done, you should close this window to go back to the previous window.
  • On tab Playback, you must select playback device, then click Configure, and then see to it that the configurations are set appropriately.

If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.

  • Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  • Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved.
