Basic disk storage is constituted of partition-oriented disks. It is a physical disk that comprises of primary and extended partitions or logical drives. One can create four partitions of which, one is extended partition that includes logical drive.

In order to start Disk Management, at first one has to log on as administrator the next step to be followed is to Click start then click run and now compmgmt.msc should be typed and click OK. The third step is to click Disk Management. Now, the Disk Management window can be seen in graphical and list views. One can customize the appearance of disk by selecting top or bottom from the view menu and click on desired option.

Creating new extended partition or logical drive

Let’s take a quick look on the steps to create new extended partition or logical drive. Firstly, right click on free space on the disk where you wish to create a partition and then click new partition. Alternatively, for logical drive, you can click on free space on extended partition and click New Logical Drive. Now one has to click on Next in New Partition Wizard. Click on the type of partition and then click Next. Now, one has to mention the size in the Partition Size MB Box. After that one has to choose whether to assign a drive letter manually or automatically and then Specify one of the given formatting procedures and click Next. Now, in the final step, one has to confirm if the selected options are correct and then click Finish. The new partition or logical drive is created successfully and appears in the proper basic disk in the Disk Management window.

Formatting a basic volume

There are five steps to format partition, logical drive or basic volume. Firstly, right click the partition or logical drive in Disk Management window to be formatted then click format. After that, you can type a name for volume in Volume label box in the Format box, as an option. Now, click the file system that you want to use in the File system box. The disk allocation unit size can be changed and one can specify whether you want to perform a quick format, or enable file and folder compression on NTFS volumes. After that, click OK and again click OK on being asked to format the volume. The format process begins.

Viewing the properties of basic volume

It is very simple to view the properties of partition or logical drive; one has to right click the desired partition or logical drive in the Disk Management and then click on properties.

Delete a partition or a logical drive

To delete a partition or logical drive, one has to first go to Disk Management window and then right click the partition or logical drive to be deleted and then click Delete Partition or Delete Logical Drive. Now, click yes when asked to delete the partition or logical drive.


Disk Management displays following status to give information about the current status of the disk: Online, Healthy and unreadable. To troubleshoot this problem, one has to restart the computer or rescan the disk to return the disk to online status. In order to rescan the disk, first you must open Computer Management. After that you must click Disk Management. Thereafter, on the Action menu, you must click Rescan Disks.
