Microsoft’s Xbox is a sixth –generation game console that was released on November 15, 2001 in North America followed by Japan, Australia and Europe. The recent version of Xbox is Xbox 360. Microsoft is competing with Sony’s PlayStation 2, Sega’s Dreamcast and Nintendo’s GameCube. If you want to play online then you can play with Xbox Live. Now they have discontinued Xbox and discontinued support for gaming console also, any faulty piece will be exchanged by Xbox 360.
Microsoft is working closely on Xbox 360 and it is the second video game console by Microsoft that is now available in market. It was launched to compete with seventh generation of video game consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. There are some cool features of Xbox 360 like it has Xbox Live service that allows players to compete online, download arcade games, game demos, trailers, TV shows, music and movies and its Windows Media Center multimedia capabilities. There are some third party media streaming services such as Netflix and ESPN in the USA or Sky Player in the UK, using these services, Xbox 360 offers region specific access. Microsoft officially launched it on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information divulged later that month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. It made a record with 36 country launch in one month and till June 2010; there are over 41.7 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide.

Xbox 360 is really a famous gaming console and looking that in mind, Microsoft launched swappable faceplates on the Xbox 360. But the console’s marketing boss told that it was a bad idea because it came in a little late, especially for a fad based on mobile phones. Albert Penello told Official Box magazine that “We don’t ever create an accessory with the intent of having it fail”, and he also mentioned that “The idea wasn’t bad… people used to put faceplates on their mobile phones. Rewind five years, faceplates was what everybody wanted to do.”

Four years back, people had already given up on it for the 360. There were artists and designers who took their time to custom paint the consoles found the swappable faces convenience. But talking commercially the thing was a big flop. Although the thing was looking cool with some cool pictures, but the fact is that it was old fashioned.

Penello also admits that “nobody bought it. We killed that one pretty quickly”. After the failure, Microsoft stopped producing official faceplate for a few years and the Xbox 360 slim, does not have the option.

Experts in the industry also mentioned the failure because the swappable faceplate with a console stays in your living room and no one pull it out of a purse to show off in a bar or at a party. Also the main reason is the late market launch and people already used it with their mobiles but it does not turn out well with Xbox 360.
