Windows 7 is produced by Microsoft mostly for use on personal computers, including both home and business purposes. The popular devices that installed Windows 7 are laptops, desktops, net books, media center PCs, and tablet PCs .Windows 7 got released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and finally reached general retail on 22nd Oct, 2009.
In less than just three years after the release of Windows 7, Windows Vista was launched. Along with it Windows 7’s server counterpart, Windows Server 2008 R2, was also released around the same time. Windows 7 is said to be succeeded byWindows 8, the release date of which is not given as of yet.
Unlike its popular predecessor, Windows Vista, which came installed with a huge number of new and updated features, Windows 7 was meant to be a more centralized, and incremental upgrade to the Windows chain, with the ultimate objective of being compatible with the hardware and applications with which Windows Vista is already compatible. The Presentations that were given by Microsoft back in 2008 mainly focused on the multi-touch support, which is a redesigned Windows Shellwith a updated taskbar, lovignly called the Superbar, and HomeGroup,a home networking system, and many other significant performance improvements. The standard applications that were included in the prior releases of Microsoft Windows, including Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, Windows Mail, and Windows Calendar, are not included in Windows 7;in place of that, most are offered separately as a part of the Windows Live Essentials suite, that too at no additional cost.
Naturally with the release of each new Windows Operating System, both consumer’s interest and the manufacturers shifts towards the new and upgraded version. The only exception to this is Windows XP which continued even after Windows Vista was launched owing to the later being more complicated for the users.
There is an overlapping period during which both the new and the older version are available and the buyers are free to choose. This is to say that the life cycle of the previous version continues into the life cycle of the latest version for some days. This period may range from anywhere between a few months to years, depending upon the popularity of the latest version.
Microsoft, during the Worldwide Partners Conference announced some changes in the protocols of the Windows Life Cycle Policy, which determines the life span of different operating system versions under its wing. According to them the beginning of Windows 8 will spell the end of Windows 7.Though the company doesn’t provide any further insights regarding the actual Windows 8,it can be concluded that it plans to make the rights of the older version to be null and void after its launch. The Business License (Volume License) will be able to make the customers make purchase, till the launch of Windows 8.
In retail selling, the picture would be different. Windows 7 will be on the shelf within 1 yr from the later’s launch. That means the overlapping period will be about 2 yrs.If windows 8 releases during mid 2012, the PCs installed with Windows 7 will sell even in 2013.Retail market will see the boxed copies till mid 2013.
