The AutoSum function in Excel quickly calculates the total of a row or column of numbers and saves you from entering a formula manually. The AutoSum is very helpful in performing simple calculations. It saves a lot of time as well as from the complications that you may end up with. The following are the simple steps that you need to use AutoSum in Microsoft Excel.

Microsoft excel is a spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft Corp for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. its main features are calculations, graphing tools, pivot tables and a macro programming language known as Visual Basic for Application. This option known as AutoSum incorporated in Microsoft excel is not only time saving but also helps in simple calculations saving you from avoidable mathematical calculations. It has been a very widely applied spreadsheet for these platforms as it saves time for the users. Excel forms a part of Microsoft Office.

Step 1:

First open Microsoft Excel and enter the rows or columns of numbers.  Enter as many rows and numbers that you will need to perform. For example Cell F2 has been clicked in as the insertion point. With this insertion point set in the cell where you want the total. And then click on the AutoSum button.

Step 2:

MS Excel will automatically generate the formula based on the data above or to the left of the insertion point.  In the example that we have mentioned, Excel automatically prepares a formula left, as indicative of the lined box surrounding the number. Excel AutoSum correctly captures the area to be totaled, so you just need to press enter and the formula is set. The cell gets added together.

Step 3:

If the AutoSum feature does not correctly capture the range you want, you have an option to adjust the formula in one of three ways:
(a) in the formula bar,
(b) in the formula highlighted with black, or
(c), by grabbing the corner of the AutoSum box and dragging it till the time it captures all of the cells.

Step4:

When you press the Enter key the whole of the total displays. If you adjust the numbers for example apples, bananas, etc the total set by AutoSum also adjusts itself.

Step 5:

AutoSum also works vertically and calculate the columns in total.  For example, if the insertion point is under the apple column and the AutoSum button has been clicked. Once you press the enter key the total will be displayed.

These above steps are simples as well easy to follow and save the consumer from a lot of strain about mathematical calculations. All the simple mathematical calculations are automatically calculated by just a single click. So however huge your cells and columns are this feature AutoSum can perform without any difficulty.
