Solution 1: Run Antivirus Program

If this doesn’t work, then consider disabling the antivirus program before trying to install updates. Certain programs prevent the installation of updates. It is possible that your antivirus may conflict and cause the error to occur.

Solution 2: Run System File Checker

The computer has an built-in tool that helps resolve various issues including the Windows errors. Running the built-in file checker tool can be helpful as the tool scans registry files and attempts to repair any corrupt files as well.

  1. Press Win + R keys
  2. Navigate to ‘Run’ dialogue box, type ‘cmd’ and click ‘OK’
  3. Type, ‘sfc/scannow’ in the resultant Command Prompt
  4. The tool will scan and repair any corrupt files found
  5. Now restart and check if the error is resolved.

Solution 3: Run DISM Tool

If the system file checker reports that the CBS is corrupt, then it is important to run the DISM tool. The Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool tells the Windows Update to provide required files that fix corrupt update files. Here is how to go about it:

  1. Press Win + R to open Run Command
  2. Type ‘cmd’ and hit Enter to open a Command Prompt. You can also hit Win + X and then click on Command Prompt
  3. Type, ‘DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-image/Restorehealth’ and then hit Enter
  4. Let the process complete and check if the error is fixed.

Note: You will have to use the Windows installation disk in case Windows Update Client is faulty. To do this, insert the installation disk and then open Command Prompt and type the command, ‘DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-image/Restorehealth/D:\RepairSource\Windows/LimitAccessNote’. Hit Enter and then restart the computer.

The error code should now be resolved.

Solution 4: Services Check

  1. Press Win + R keys together
  2. Type, ‘services.msc’ and hit Enter to open services window
  3. Search for MSI Installer, BITS, Cryptograph and Windows Update services
  4. Make sure each of these services are running. If any has stopped, click, ‘Start the Service’
  5. Restart the computer and try to install updates once more
  6. Check if the error has now resolved.

Solution 5: Troubleshoot Windows Update

  1. Press Win + W together
  2. Type ‘Troubleshooting’ and select it in the next window
  3. Select ‘View All’
  4. Click, ‘Windows Update Troubleshooting’
  5. Follow the other on-screen instructions and hit Enter
  6. Check if the error has resolved.
